Balsamia oregonensis is a species of ascomycete fungus in the family Helvellaceae. It is the type species of the genus Barssia , and is commonly found in Oregon, which it is named for.
Balsamia oregonensis is reddish-yellow in color and between 1 and 2.5 cm (0.39 and 0.98 in) in diameter. [2] [3] [4] Its exterior appears lumpy and rounded in nature with less distinct warts then other truffles.[ citation needed ] The exterior folds into itself at a singular point, and the entirety of the exterior is covered in coarse hyphae.[ citation needed ] The interior of B. oregonensis is translucent white and appears marbled.[ citation needed ] The interior has central channels which do not appear translucent and somewhat mimics the exterior in shape/form, not unlike the human brain, these channels penetrate the gleba in multiple places.[ citation needed ]
Balsamia oregonensis releases its fungal spores seasonally in the spring and into early summertime. [5]
Balsamia oregonensis is an edible species of truffle and is described as having a pleasant taste. While edible, B. oregonensis is not often found in large enough quantities to be considered a regular delicacy even where it is most prevalent.[ citation needed ]
There is evidence that B. oregonensis is seasonally consumed by other animals, such as chipmunks, within its ecosystem. [6]
Balsamia oregonensis was first described by Helen Gilkey in 1925, [4] who named it in honor of Professor H. P. Barss who first collected B. oregonensis in Oregon. [7] This was then published in the Journal Mycologia, from the Mycological Society of America in December of 1925 Vol. 17 No. 6.
Balsamia oregonensis is commonly found alongside Douglas Fir trees which are considered its primary host. [8] This association is useful in truffling and the best way to locate B. oregonensis in the wild.
As its name suggests, Balsamia oregonensis is primarily found in Oregon, United States, although it is not exclusive to the area. Other areas within the United States where B. oregonensis can be found includes the Great plains region. [9]
B. oregonensis has reportedly also been found in the Polish Tatra Mountains. [10]
Ascomycota is a phylum of the kingdom Fungi that, together with the Basidiomycota, forms the subkingdom Dikarya. Its members are commonly known as the sac fungi or ascomycetes. It is the largest phylum of Fungi, with over 64,000 species. The defining feature of this fungal group is the "ascus", a microscopic sexual structure in which nonmotile spores, called ascospores, are formed. However, some species of Ascomycota are asexual and thus do not form asci or ascospores. The Discinaceae are a family of ascomycete fungi, the best known members of which are the false morels of the genus Gyromitra. Helvella corium is a species of fungus in the family Helvellaceae of the order Pezizales. This inedible cup-shaped fungus is black, and grows on the ground often near willows in deciduous or mixed forests.
Polyozellus is a fungal genus in the family Thelephoraceae, a grouping of mushrooms known collectively as the leathery earthfans. Previously considered a monotypic genus, it now contains the Polyozellus multiplex species complex. The genus name is derived from the Greek poly meaning many, and oz, meaning branch. It is commonly known as the blue chanterelle, the clustered blue chanterelle, bluefan, or, in Alaska, the black chanterelle. The distinctive fruit body of this species comprises blue- to purple-colored clusters of vase- or spoon-shaped caps with veiny wrinkles on the undersurface that run down the length of the stem.
Sarcosphaera is a fungal genus within the Pezizaceae family. It is a monotypic genus, containing the single species Sarcosphaera coronaria, commonly known as the pink crown, the violet crown-cup, or the violet star cup. Although several taxa have been described as Sarcosphaera species since the introduction of the genus in 1869, most lack modern descriptions, have been transferred to the related genus Peziza, or are considered synonymous with S. coronaria.

Galiella rufa, commonly known as the rubber cup, the rufous rubber cup, or the hairy rubber cup, is a species of fungus in the family Sarcosomataceae. It produces cup-shaped fruit bodies with the texture of tough, gelatinous rubber, with a rough, blackish-brown, felt-like outer surface and a smooth reddish-brown inner surface.
Tuber oregonense, commonly known as the Oregon white truffle, is a species of edible truffle in the genus Tuber. Described as new to science in 2010, the North American species is found on the western coast of the United States, from northern California to southern British Columbia west of the Cascade Range. A mycorrhizal fungus, it grows in a symbiotic association with Douglas fir. It overlaps in distribution with the closely related T. gibbosum, but they have different growing seasons: T. oregonense typically appears from October through March, while T. gibbosum grows from January to June. The fruit bodies of the fungus are roughly spherical to irregular in shape, and resemble small potatoes up to 5 cm (2 in) in diameter. Inside the truffle is the gleba, which is initially white before it becomes a marbled tan color. The large, often thick-walled, and strongly ornamented spores are produced in large spherical asci. The truffle is highly prized for its taste and aroma. Some individuals have claimed success in cultivating the truffles in Christmas tree farms.
Tuber gibbosum, commonly known as the Oregon white truffle, is a species of truffle in the genus Tuber. It is found in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States, where it grows in an ectomycorrhizal association with Douglas-fir. It is commercially collected between as early as October and into March.
Kalapuya brunnea is a species of truffle in the monotypic fungal genus Kalapuya. The truffle occurs only in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States, in western Oregon and northern California. Known locally as the Oregon brown truffle, it was formerly thought to be an undescribed species of Leucangium until molecular analysis demonstrated that it was distinct from that genus. The truffle is reddish brown with a rough and warty outer skin, while the interior spore-producing gleba is initially whitish before developing greyish-brown mottling as it matures. Mature truffles have an odor resembling garlicky cheese, similar to mature Camembert. The species has been harvested for culinary purposes in Oregon.
Helen Margaret Gilkey (1886–1972) was an American mycologist and botanist, as well as a botanical illustrator and watercolor artist She was born on March 6, 1886, in Montesano, Washington, and moved to Corvallis, Oregon, with her family in 1903. She died in 1972 at the age of 86.
Rhizopogon occidentalis is an ectomycorrhizal fungus in the family Rhizopogonaceae of the Basidiomycota. It occurs most commonly in western North America in association with two-needle and three-needle pine hosts. They are false truffles with fruiting bodies that are yellow on the surface and pale yellow inside. Their edibility is disputed.
Leucangium carthusianum is a species of ascomycete fungus. It is commonly known as the Oregon black truffle. It is found in the Pacific Northwest region of North America, where it grows in an ectomycorrhizal association with Douglas-fir. It is commercially collected, usually assisted by a specially trained truffle dog. Mature fruiting bodies can be dug up mostly during winter, but the season can extend from September through April.
Genea harknessii, commonly known as the dark geode truffle, is a species of fungus in the genus Genea. The species was described by Helen Gilkey in 1916. The mature fruit has a convoluted, brain-like appearance and often is no larger than an adult's thumbnail. The exterior is dark brown with a hollow interior. The flesh between the dark interior and exterior 'skin' is white to pale grey.
Carbomyces emergens is a desert truffle in the genus Carbomyces, a small genus common to the Chihuahuan desert in the southwestern United States and Mexico. C. emergens is regarded as the most common and widely distributed species in Carbomyces, also serving as the genus' type species. C. emergens belongs to the Carbomycetaceae family, in the order Pezizales, class Pezizomycetes, division Ascomycota.
