Barnston is a village and civil parish in Essex, England. The village is on the B1008 road, about 1+3⁄4 miles (2.8 km) south-east of Great Dunmow and 9 miles (14 km) north-north-west from the county town of Chelmsford.

Governance

Barnston is part of the electoral ward named Barnston and High Easter. The total population of this ward at the 2011 census was 1,701.^[3] The first tier of local government is Barnston parish council. The parish is in the district of Uttlesford and in the parliamentary constituency of Saffron Walden.^[2]

Notable residents

Thomas Watson (c. 1620–1686), puritan, retired to the village and died there.^[4]

Bridget Plowden (1910–2000), educational reformer, lived in later life at Martels Manor, on the edge of the village.^[5]

Little Chesterford is a small village and civil parish in Uttlesford, Essex, in the East of England. Close to the Cambridgeshire border, it is built principally along a single sunken lane to the east of a chalk stream tributary of the River Cam or Granta and is located 1 km southeast of Great Chesterford and some 5 km northwest of Saffron Walden. The small hamlet of Springwell is just to the south of the village. Up the hill to the east is Chesterford Park, with a mid-19th-century mansion in a 250-acre estate and now a science park called Chesterford Research Park. The wide and relatively deep valley of the river Cam provides a rolling landscape of chalky boulder clay with extensive and wide views. The surrounding farmland is mostly in intensive arable use and except for areas alongside the river, some of which is liable to flooding, is classified as being of grade 2 quality.

Little Dunmow is a village situated in the Uttlesford district, in rural Essex, England, in the vale of the River Chelmer about 3 miles (4.8 km) east-southeast of the town of Great Dunmow. It can be reached from the Dunmow South exit of the A120 by following the road towards Braintree (B1256) for 3.2 km before turning right for the village. The centre of the old village, which has just 99 dwellings, is a further 0.6 km along the road. The Flitch Way, a linear country park along the route of the old Braintree to Bishop's Stortford railway, links Little Dunmow and the new settlement of Flitch Green. The new village, built on the site of a former sugar beet factory, is a self-contained community of 850 dwellings and is another kilometre along the road towards Felsted.
