BAROQUE (previously stylized as Baroque and baroque) was a Japanese rock band originally formed in 2001. [1] [2] Originally signed to S'Cube, a sub-division of the independent record label Free-Will, the band later switched to the company's Firewall Division, with distribution handled by Sony Music Entertainment Japan. After releasing two albums, along with a greatest hits compilation, several singles and home video releases, baroque disbanded in 2004.

They became the newest band to play at the prestigious Nippon Budokan after just two years and three months into their career. [3] They have also been credited as one of the bands that started oshare kei, [4] a subgenre of visual kei that features more colorful outfits and utilizes upbeat and "happy" music.

baroque reunited for a free concert in 2011 and fully restarted activities in January 2012. That same month, baroque became the first independent band to have three of the top five positions on Oricon's main chart. However, bassist Bansaku left the group several months later and guitarist Akira followed in 2013, leaving only the duo of vocalist ryo and guitarist Kei.

History

2001–2004: Formation and disbandment

baroque was formed in May 2001 by guitarist Akira and bassist Bansaku, after vocalist ryo and guitarist Kei joined in June, they had their first concert in August. The following month saw the demo "Hitei Derikashi" released and around the same time drummer Naru joined. [5] The band released the mini-album Tokyo Stripper at their first one-man concert on January 12, 2002. However, Naru left the band in March and was replaced by Yuji. [6]

Even thou they were still an independent band, baroque was able to play at NHK Hall and Akasaka Blitz. [1] [6] They signed to a major label in Spring 2003, however, Yuji officially left the band in May 2003 due to problems with his brain/memory. [5] [7] Their first major single was July 2003's "Gakidou". [8] When baroque went major, their sound shifted and included a drum machine; also their style shifted to casual clothing. [9] Their second major single "Ila" (2004) particularly had a trance/electronica sound. [1] After an August 20, 2003 concert at the Nippon Budokan, which made baroque the fastest band to play the prestigious venue after just two years and three months of activity, [3] Kei was arrested due to a drunken fight with the venue crew. Their single was delayed, several concerts cancelled, and their website temporarily closed. [5]

After resuming activities and releasing several singles in 2004, Akira was temporarily hospitalized, resulting in more concert cancellations. [5] In August, Bansaku announced he was resigning. [10] On September 11, two days after the release of their first album Sug Life, baroque announced that they would break up, but they continued activities through the rest of the year. [5] [11] [12] Their last concert was a sold-out performance at Zepp Tokyo on December 25, 2004, titled "baroque Last Live Mumirai -No Future-". [1] [9]

Vocalist ryo and guitarist Kei then reformed their previous band Kannivalism in 2006, [10] while Bansaku and Akira formed boogieman in 2007. [13]

2011–2013: Reunion and the disappearance of Bansaku

baroque consisting of ryo, Kei, Bansaku and Akira reunited for a free live, titled "Odai ha Kekkou Irimasenkara", on July 17, 2011, at Yokohama Red Brick. [14] An estimated 10,000 fans attended. [15] On September 28, 2011, they announced that they would fully restart activities at a live called "baroque Re: First Live in Future" on January 6, 2012, at Zepp Tokyo. [16] On January 4, they released three singles, "Rinzen Identity", "Mono Dorama" and "Teeny-Tiny Star". [17] The singles reached third, fourth, and fifth, respectively, on the Oricon chart, making baroque the first independent band to have three of the top five positions on the majors' chart. [17] They then went on a nationwide tour in March, followed by a hall tour in April. [17]

On June 26, baroque posted on their website that bassist Bansaku had been missing since June 24. [18] The band notified the police and even retitled their tour to "Search for Bansaku". [18] A month later, on July 30, a message was posted on their website stating that a representative of Bansaku's contacted the band saying he was safe, but due to his health has decided to leave baroque. [19] As the message was not from Bansaku himself, the other members stated that they were trying to arrange a meeting with him in person. [19] However, at a later date, they officially accepted Bansaku's exit from the band. The members announced that it was due to "his private issue". [20]

Following Bansaku's exit, in the end of 2012, Akira stepped away from the band's activities during the production of the album Non Fiction and officially left the band at a later date. Since then, baroque became a duo consisting of Ryo and Kei supported by touring/recording members. Kei stated that “we won't add any permanent member from here on”. [21]

2014–present

In February 2014, the band capitalized its name as BAROQUE. [22]

On May 27, 2015, they released PLANETARY SECRET, the first album as a duo.

On October 26, 2016, a single "Girl" was released inviting ken from L'Arc-en-Ciel as the first external producer for the band. [23] [24] It was followed by two singles "AN ETERNITY" and "FLOWER OF ROMANCE" released on July 24, 2018.

On releasing the album PLANETARY SECRET, the band organized a preview event at a planetarium featuring planets as the motif of the album. [25] Since then, the band aggressively takes conceptual approaches to their live events such as the concert allowing audiences to take photos with their smartphone and share them on SNS, [26] [27] the concert featuring live paintings, a 360° concert installing a round stage in the center of audiences, [28] and the concert featuring a performance of a flower artist. [29]

On April 30, 2019, "VISION OF // PEP" was held at Nihombashi Mitsui Hall, the first concert at a hall since they became a duo. [30] At this concert, the songs of the upcoming album PUER ET PUELLA were unveiled prior to its release.

On July 13, 2019, the talk and preview event for the album was held. [31] The band undertook the tour "THE BIRTH OF LIBERTY" with a total of 21 venues across Japan starting from July 24 at Nagoya E.L.L. Their 4th album PUER ET PUELLA (Latin words for "boys and girls") was released on July 30, 2019, that includes the three preceding singles. It was a long-awaited album after an interval of four years and two months since the release of the previous album PLANETARY SECRET.

On November 1, 2019, while the band intensively carried on their live concerts, they suddenly started mysterious countdown on Twitter. On the stroke of the midnight on November 2, they announced that the new album SIN DIVISION would be released in January next year. [32] The fans and people around them were very surprised at the news because it was announced in the middle of the tour for the previous album that had been released only four months before then.

On January 10, 2020, "THE BIRTH OF LIBERTY" tour's final concert was held at Harmony Hall Zama, [33] which was a triumphant return concert for Kei.

On January 28, 2020, the album SIN DIVISION was released. With the completion of this album, they accomplished “the three albums we decided to produce when we became a duo”, according to Kei. These three albums are often referred to as a black book for PLANETARY SECRET (PS), a white book for PUER ET PUELLA (PEP), and a red book for SIN DIVISION (SD). [34] The concert tour for SIN DIVISION was scheduled starting from February 2020. However, the band had to postpone the tour because of the self-restraint request by the government under the COVID-19 pandemic. [35]

On April 3, 2020, the band uploaded a music video with a demo recording of the new song "STAY" [36] on YouTube. The entire movie was produced by Ryo and Kei using online communication tools while completely staying at home under the COVID-19 pandemic. The lyrics are entirely in English composed by Ryo and Kei. While the band were recording the full version of the music, they invited their fans to post photos or comments on "what they think precious, what they want to protect, or what they love" on Twitter and LINE OPENCHAT. These photos and comments were compiled into the movie and released with the full version of the music. [37]

L'Arc-en-Ciel, stylized as L'Arc~en~Ciel), also known as Laruku, is a Japanese rock band, formed in Osaka in 1991 by bassist tetsuya and vocalist hyde. Following the departure of original members hiro and pero, guitarist ken and drummer sakura were recruited to replace them in 1992 and 1993, respectively. While they first got their start as a visual kei band, L'Arc-en-Ciel have not had any association with the movement since their major label debut in 1994. Sakura left the band in 1997 and was replaced by yukihiro in January 1998, completing the current line-up.

Luna Sea is a Japanese rock band formed in Kanagawa Prefecture in 1986. Due to the use of make-up and costumes early in their career and their widespread popularity, they are considered one of the most successful and influential bands in the visual kei movement. Throughout the mid-1990s they used significantly less make-up, and after a one-year break in 1997, came back with a more mainstream alternative rock style and toned down their on-stage attire. They disbanded in 2000. In 2003, HMV Japan ranked Luna Sea at number 90 on their list of the 100 most important Japanese pop acts.

Siam Shade was a five-piece Japanese rock band, formed in Tokyo in 1991. The classic line-up of Hideki on vocals, Natchin on bass, Kazuma and Daita on guitar, and Jun-ji on drums broke onto the visual kei scene alongside a multitude of other artists in the early 1990s and enjoyed a decade of relative popularity before disbanding in early 2002. The members have reunited several times since 2007 for one-off concerts and short tours. Outside Japan, Siam Shade is best known for "1/3 no Junjō na Kanjō", which was the sixth ending theme of the Rurouni Kenshin anime. Daita's work on their song "Triptych" was named the 83rd best guitar instrumental by Young Guitar Magazine in 2019.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Közi</span> Japanese musician

Közi is a Japanese musician, singer-songwriter and DJ. He is best known as one of the guitarists for the 1990s visual kei rock band Malice Mizer. After they went on indefinite hiatus in 2001, he formed the industrial rock duo Eve of Destiny and also started a solo career. Közi is currently in the bands Dalle, XA-VAT, ZIZ and Vamquet, while occasionally performing solo shows.

NEWS is a Japanese boy band consisting of Keiichiro Koyama, Takahisa Masuda and Shigeaki Kato. Formed in 2003 by Johnny Kitagawa as a nine-member group under the label Johnny's Entertainment, NEWS released a promotional single "NEWS Nippon", which was used for the World Cup of Volleyball Championships. In 2004, Takahiro Moriuchi left the group and the remaining eight members released their debut single, "Kibō: Yell", which debuted atop the Oricon charts.

Toshimitsu Deyama, known exclusively by his stage name Toshi, is a Japanese singer and songwriter who is the lead vocalist and a co-founder of the rock band X Japan, who rose to prominence in the late 1980s and early 1990s and is credited as founders of the visual kei movement. Toshi began an extensive solo career in 1992 before leaving X Japan at the end of 1997. Toshi laments he was "brainwashed" by a group called Home of Heart, whose leader would control his musical output for the next 12 years. In 2007, X Japan reunited and began a world tour. Toshi severed ties with Home of Heart in January 2010 and renewed his solo career. His distinctive, impassioned tenor vocals have been compared to those of Steve Perry. In January 2018, he began to use the stage name Toshi Ryugen.

Zigzo is a Japanese rock supergroup that originally started activities in 1999 and disbanded in 2002. Each member came from a prominent band and they became very popular in the indies scene. They disbanded after their last show on March 16, 2002, reportedly due to musical differences.

Alice Nine is a Japanese visual kei rock band formed in Tokyo in 2004. They were a part of PS Company until 2014. The band had King Records as its record label until 2010, when they joined Tokuma Japan. Then, in 2013, the band joined Universal Music Group's Nayutawave Records. They shortened their name to A9 in 2015, but switched back to Alice Nine in 2019.

Raphael was a Japanese visual kei rock band that formed in 1997, when the members were only 15. They disbanded in 2001, after guitarist Kazuki died at age 19. The remaining members reunited Raphael for two concerts in 2012 and for a 2016 tour.

La'cryma Christi was a Japanese visual kei rock band originally active from 1991 to 2007. At their peak, they were considered one of "the big four of visual kei" alongside Fanatic Crisis, Malice Mizer and Shazna. They reunited for a concert in 2009 at the V-Rock Festival, for their short reunion tour in 2010, and for a 15th anniversary tour in 2012.

Kannivalism was a Japanese visual kei rock band originally formed in 2001, signed to Free-Will and distributed by Avex Trax. However, they disbanded that same year when baroque was formed, and subsequently reformed with new bassist Yuchi after baroque disbanded in 2006.

Deadman also quickly became known for vocalist Mako's heavily melancholic lyrical themes, with the music itself touching on alternative rock in sound. The group disbanded in 2006 without explanation. Mako and guitarist aie reunited as Deadman in 2019.

Heidi. is a Japanese visual kei rock band formed in Tokyo in February 2006. They gained popularity after performing at the memorial concert on the 10th anniversary of the death of the musician hide on May 4, 2008, to tens of thousands of people. Their third album was released in Europe by Gan-Shin records in 2009 and the following year Heidi. signed to major label Geneon Universal Entertainment.

9Goats Black Out was a Japanese visual kei rock band formed in 2007. The band was signed with the independent label Dalli.
