Beautiful: The Carole King Musical (Original Broadway Cast Recording) is the cast album for the 2014 Broadway musical Beautiful: The Carole King Musical . Released digitally on April 1, 2014 and physically on May 13, through Ghostlight Records, it featured the cast members performing the songs of Carole King in the Broadway show. The album won the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album in 2015.

Background

Beautiful: The Carol King Musical is based on the songs performed by Carole King and produced for Sony/ATV Music Publishing. [1] The album was announced by Ghostlight Records on February 13, which served as its publisher, and the songs were recorded at the MSR Studios in New York during period between February 27 and March 3, 2014. [2] The cast album featured 25 songs—"Oh Carol", "Be-Bop-A-Lula", "Who Put the Bomp" and the reprised version of "Will You Love Me Tomorrow", were excluded from the track list. [3] [4] Five songs from the album—Some Kind of Wonderful", "Walking in the Rain", "You’ve Got a Friend", "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman" and "Beautiful"—were released exclusively through Entertainment Weekly on March 27, 2014. [3] The album was digitally released through ITunes and other digital formats on April 1, 2014 and in CDs on May 13, 2014. [4]

Commercial performance

Upon its digital release, the album debuted as the number 1 cast recording on iTunes and ranked at 41st position overall. [5] [6] At the Billboard 200 charts, the album debuted at number 60 and topped the Cast Albums chart, post the release of its physical versions. [7] [8]

Time Out ranked this recording at 22nd place on the "The best original Broadway cast recordings of the 21st century" list. Further, Chief Drama Critic and Theater Editor David Cote wrote, "The arrangements are lush and soaring, the sound is crisp, and superstar Jessie Mueller, as King, will break your heart." [9]

Jessica Ruth Mueller is an American actress and singer. She started her acting career in Chicago and won two Joseph Jefferson Awards in 2008 and 2011 for her roles as Carrie Pipperidge in Carousel and Amalia Balash in She Loves Me. In 2011, she moved to New York City to star in a Broadway revival of musical On a Clear Day You Can See Forever, for which she was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical. She won the 2014 Tony Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical for her performance as Carole King in Beautiful: The Carole King Musical. She went on to receive two additional Best Actress in a Musical Tony Award nominations for her leading roles in Waitress (2016) and the Broadway revival of Carousel (2018).

Benjamin Schiff Platt is an American actor and singer. The son of film and theater producer Marc Platt, he began his acting career in musical theater as a child and appeared in productions of The Sound of Music (2006) and The Book of Mormon (2012–2015), rising to prominence for originating the title role in the Broadway coming-of-age musical Dear Evan Hansen (2015–2017). Kinky Boots is a Broadway original cast album for the homonym musical Kinky Boots. It was released on May 28, 2013, less than two months after the show opened on Broadway. It was produced by Cyndi Lauper, who wrote the songs, Stephen Oremus, the orchestrator and conductor, and William Wittman. On release it premiered at number one on the Billboard Cast Albums Chart and number fifty-one on the Billboard 200 chart, making it the highest charting Broadway cast recording since The Book of Mormon's album was released two years earlier. Michael J. Moritz Jr. is a Grammy Award nominee, Tony Award winner, an Emmy Award winner, American theatrical producer, record producer, music supervisor, music director, arranger, Broadway music supervisor, performer and pianist. Michael's work as a pianist, music director and arranger is featured on many recordings in the pop and musical theatre genres. Michael is on the Board of Directors for The Angel Band Project.

The musical Hadestown, written by American singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell and based on her 2010 studio album of the same name, has had two official cast recordings. In addition, various songs from Hadestown were re-recorded by Mitchell for her 2014 studio album Xoa, including the musical's opening number "Anyway the Wind Blows" which had not appeared on the original concept album. Released on June 3, 2008, the album features 23 songs with music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda and performed by the cast members. The album was one of the best-selling cast albums in the 2000s, sold around 500,000 copies and certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America. It won the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album, the following year.
