Some Like It Hot (Original Broadway Cast Recording) is the 2023 album performed by the cast members of the 2022 Broadway musical Some Like It Hot, based on the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and United Artists' 1959 film of the same name. Featuring musical performances from Christian Borle, J. Harrison Ghee, Adrianna Hicks, NaTasha Yvette Williams, Kevin Del Aguila and the ensemble cast, who performed the original songs composed by Marc Shaiman who co-wrote it with Scott Wittman, the album was released through Concord Theatricals on March 10, 2023. At the 66th Annual Grammy Awards, it won the Best Musical Theater Album. [1] [2]

Background

On January 16, 2023, Concord announced the release of the cast album through its specialised label for cast recordings, Concord Theatricals which was eventually set for March 10, 2023. [3] [4] The performance was recorded during the Broadway show held for three days from January 2224, 2023. [5] The album consisted 17 songs from the musical performance, except for the ensemble performance of "Tip Tap Trouble". [6]

Reception

Bobby Patrick of BroadwayWorld in his 5-star review, stated the album "captures and delivers the show to our ears, giving us song, story, and dance from start to finish". [7] Frank Rizzo of Variety and Lester Fabian Brathwaite of Entertainment Weekly complimented the music as both "sizzling", "fun" and "witty". [8] [9] Jesse Green of The New York Times added that the music was "designed, like so many Golden Age musicals, to give pleasure both within and without the story". [5] Alexis Soloski of The Guardian described the musical numbers as a "pastiche" of other songs from Shaiman and Wittman's works, and few numbers being misplaced. [10]

Smash is an American musical-drama television series created by playwright Theresa Rebeck. It premiered in the United States on NBC on February 6, 2012. The series revolves around a fictional New York theater community making new Broadway musicals. In the first season, the focus was on the making of Bombshell, a musical based on the life of Marilyn Monroe. In the second season, the show was split between taking Bombshell to Broadway and the creation and mounting of a contemporary pop musical called Hit List that was about the price of fame. Other fictional musicals that were touched on for which original songs were performed include Beautiful and Liaisons. Bombshell is an American musical with book by Patrik Komljenović, music by Marc Shaiman, and lyrics by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman based on the original fictitious musical from the first season of the NBC television series Smash. The songs include soulful jazz anthems and upbeat pop songs. Bombshell is the life story of Marilyn Monroe. It tells the story of the aspiring starlet who transforms herself into a worldwide sex symbol, including her early life and her alleged affair with American President John F. Kennedy. Despite the same name, and subject matter, this musical from SMASH is unrelated to the Off-Broadway musical from 2001 which ran at the Grove Street Playhouse.
