Ben Starr is an English actor. After a string of minor roles, mainly on television, he had his breakthrough as a voice actor after starring as Clive Rosfield in Final Fantasy XVI , for which he received a Golden Joystick Award for Best Lead Performer, [1] and has subsequently gone on to do voice work in multiple other video games.

Biography

Starr was born in Bristol. He attended Queen Elizabeth's Hospital School and was Captain of School 2005/6. While at school he was a member of Great Western Youth Theatre, Bristol Old Vic Youth Theatre and HTV Television Workshop. He studied History at the University of Durham and was President of Castle Theatre Company, a member of DULOG, as well as a founding member of DIM. On graduating from Durham he completed a 2 year postgraduate acting course at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA).

Career

His first role was in Father Brown in 2013, followed by Doctors in 2013, and The Musketeers in 2015. He played Captain James Hawdon in the BBC series Dickensian . [2] In 2016, he had roles in Casualty as Nathan Mason and he starred in the role of Donatello in Medici: Masters of Florence . In 2022, he appeared as Friar Tuck in “Robin Hood, on the run” at the Solihull Fringe Festival. In 2017 he landed a recurring role as the Apothecary, Dr Christopher Priestley, in the Sky1 series Jamestown . [3]

Starr voiced Clive Rosfield in the 2023 video game Final Fantasy XVI , which enriched his stardom in the video game industry. He also hosted the Golden Joystick Awards in 2024, where he previously won the award for Best Lead Performer as the titular character. [4] He returned to voice Clive as the final character in Tekken 8's first season pass.

Final Fantasy XVI, an action role-playing game developed, published, and released by Square Enix in 2023, is the sixteenth mainline entry in the Final Fantasy series. The game's world design was a collaborative effort between producer Naoki Yoshida, co-director Hiroshi Takai, co-director and lead writer Kazutoyo Maehiro, and art director Hiroshi Minagawa. The characters and Eikon summoned monsters were designed by Kazuya Takahashi, while Michael-Christopher Koji Fox handled localization and helped with writing.

He is one of its main characters, the Dominant of Bahamut, the son of the Emperor Sylvestre Lesage and lover of Sir Terence. He was designed as a reflection of the game's protagonist, Clive Rosfield, who was described as a darker character compared to Dion being an "all-around Superman." Dion has received praise from both critics and fans alike for his sexuality, particularly his romance with Terence. He is the first main character to be openly gay and he was positively received. The depiction was mostly received well for its subtlety.
