Ben Wright (born 23 April 1987) is an Australian para powerlifter. Ben was successful in securing a spot via the Bipartisan Vote to compete at 2024 Paris Paralympics. [1] [2]
Wright was born on 23 April 1987 at Viveash, Western Australia. [1] He was born with spina bifida. [1] In 2023, he works in Perth as a draftsman. [3]
Growing up he played wheelchair basketball and threw the shot put. [1] In 2012, he took up powerlifting after attending a 2012 a “come-and-try day” where he pressed 80 kg . [1] At the 2014 Commonwealth Games , Glasgow, he finished tenth in the Men's Bench Press Heavyweight with a press of 152.1 kg. [1] At the 2018 Commonwealth Games, Gold Coast, he finished sixth in the Men's Bench Press Heavyweight with a press of 152.4 kg. [1]
Ten weeks outs from the 2014 Commonwealth Games, Glasgow, Wright suffered a seizure that resulted in a broken back in four places. Placing fourth at Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022, in 2023 he later elevated to the Bronze position following the disqualification of the Indian gold medallist due to an anti-doping violation. [3]
Wright enters the 2024 Paris Paralympics with a personal best set at the Dubai World Championships in 2023 of 191 kg in the Men's Bench Press 88 kg. [4]
Paralympic powerlifting, also known as para powerlifting and para-lifting, is an adaptation of the sport of powerlifting for athletes with disabilities. The only discipline in Paralympic powerlifting is the bench press. The sport is governed by the International Paralympic Committee and is open to anyone with a minimum level of disability who can extend their arms within 20° of full extension during a lift. Powerlifting has been competed at the Summer Paralympics since 1984.
Richard Nicholson is an Australian Paralympic powerlifter and athlete. He has competed at five successive Paralympic Games from the 1996 to 2012 Summer Paralympics. At the 2000 Games, he won a silver medal in the powerlifting Men's Up to 60 kg event. In athletics, at the 2004 Athens Paralympics he won a silver medal in the Men's 4 × 100 m T53–54 event and at the 2012 London Paralympics a bronze medal in the Men's 4 × 400 m T53–54 event.
Darren Gardiner is an Australian Paralympic powerlifter. He has won two Paralympic silver medals in the Men's Over 100 kg powerlifting event. He did not medal at the 2012 Games.
Rajinder Singh Rahelu is an Indian Paralympic powerlifter. He won a bronze medal at the 2004 Summer Paralympics in the 56 kg category. He represented India at the 2008 Summer Paralympics in Beijing, finishing fifth in the final standings. Arjuna Award recipient, Rahelu, represented India at the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London, United Kingdom; he failed in all his three attempts at 175 kilograms (386 lb).

He took the silver medal at the 2017 Powerlifting World Cup in Dubai with a career-best lift of 200 kg. He competed at the 2018 Commonwealth Games where he won a bronze medal in the heavyweight event.

Paul Kehinde was a Nigerian Para powerlifter. He was born in Epe, in Lagos state, Nigeria. He competed in the men's 65 kg class and also occasionally in the 72 kg class. At the 2014 Commonwealth Games he competed in the men's 72 kg event where he won a gold medal. Kehinde died 18 November 2021 in Lagos after a brief period of illness.
