Bengal Silicon Valley Tech Hub is an under construction technology hub in the Indian state of West Bengal, consisting of various tech parks, buildings, projects and premises which work on the sectors like IT/ITeS, Data Centre, E-commerce, IoT, KPO, AI, R&D and Telecom. [3] The hub is projected to be completed in 2025, generating 1,00,000 direct jobs. As of 2022, the total investment in the hub is ₹1 trillion. [4] [5]

Formation

Bengali Silicon Valley Hub was formed in 2018 to boost technology service industry in the state and was inaugurated on 13 August 2018 by Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee. [6] Initially 100 acres of land was embarked for the hub. [7] Afterwards another 100 acres of land was added after the announcement of finance minister Amit Mitra. 107 acres were allotted in Phrase I and II with TCS having 20 acres, Reliance Jio having 40 acres, Cognizant having 25 acres, ISI having 4 acres, Tech Mahindra having 4 acres and Capgemini having 7 acres. The phrase III allotted 56.7 acres of land. [8] Additional 50 acres of land was added to the hub in May 2022. [9]

As of 2022, the total area allotted stands at 224 acres with 50 companies taking 59 plots [10]

Data Centres

BSVH has numerous data centre projects built and under construction. In 2018, Reliance Jio took 40 acres of land to set up Rs 1,000-crore data centre facility. [11] It will have two international data centres in collaboration with Microsoft and a technology centre. [12] The facility is planned to have a 525,000 square feet of built-up area. The company invested Rs 100 crore in the first phase. [13] In 2020, the construction was started. [12]

Adani Enterprises is also constructing a hyper-scale data centre on 51.75 acres of land, which is the single largest land in the hub for a data centre. [14]

NTT Global data centres, which is a pioneer company in the field of data centre is also constructing a data hub on 7.5 acres of land in BSVH. The project was launched in 2022 with a projected investment of ₹2000 Crores. The facility will consist 6 lakh sq. ft. of area, 40 MW capacity and will be built in three phrases (buildings) completing 1, 2.5 and 2.5 lakhs sq. ft. of space respectively. [15] [16]

Other companies are setting up data centres like STT global data centres in 5.6 acres, CtrlS global data centes in 5.6 acres, Techno Electric & Eng in 4 acres and Airtel Nxtra in 2.85 acres. [15] [17] [18]

IT Space

Major IT companies have started their constructions in the hub, likely TCS [19] [20] in 20 acres, LTIMindtree [21] in 18.92 acres, Webel [22] in 5 acres, Firstsource Solutions in 4 acres. There are more than 40 medium and small IT companies.

Others

Other sectos include E-commerce, IoT, KPO, AI, R&D and Telecom. Indian Statistical Institute has a Centre of Excellence on a 4-acre plot. Society for Applied Microwave Electronics Engineering and Research, an R&D institution under Ministry of Electronics and Information has a 3.05 acre R&D unit in the hub. [23]

Connectivity and transport

Bengal Silicon Valley Tech Hub is located on the Biswa Bangla Sarani. Kolkata Metro's Orange Line serves as the rapid transit of the area.

The software industry in Karnataka state in India has become one of the main pillars of the state's economy. Karnataka stands first among all the states of India in terms of revenue generated from software exports, accounting for 42% share of all software exports from the country during the financial year of 2022-2023. The total exports of Karnataka was Rs 3.28 lakh crore. Karnataka's capital city Bangalore has the sobriquet of Silicon Valley of India, with total IT exports worth US$ 53 billion during the financial year 2021–22, employing 1 000 000 people directly and 3 000 000 lakh indirectly. Though most software companies are located in Bangalore, some have settled in other cities like Mysore, Mangalore, Belgaum and Hubli in Karnataka. The infrastructure required for setting up software industries in Karnataka is provided by STPI. The software industry in Karnataka includes companies dealing with various fields like telecommunication, banking software, avionics, database, automotive, networking, semiconductors, mobile handsets, internet applications and business process outsourcing. Currently, out of total IT exports, 95% is from Bengaluru alone and the other Karnataka cities contribute just 5%.

The information technology (I.T.) industry in India comprises information technology services and business process outsourcing. The share of the IT-BPM sector in the GDP of India is 7.4% in FY 2022. The IT and BPM industries' revenue is estimated at US$ 245 billion in FY 2023. The domestic revenue of the IT industry is estimated at $51 billion, and export revenue is estimated at $194 billion in FY 2023. The IT–BPM sector overall employs 5.4 million people as of March 2023. In December 2022, Union Minister of State for Electronics and IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar, in a written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha informed that IT units registered with state-run Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) and Special Economic Zones have exported software worth Rs 11.59 lakh crore in 2021–22.

Software exports from Tamil Nadu during 2017–2018 rose 8.8% per cent to touch 1,11,179 crore, involving a workforce of 780,000, and the city is the hub for deep tech startup companies. Many software and software services companies have development centres in Chennai, which contributed 14 percent of India's total software exports of 14,42,140 lakh during 2006–07, making it the third largest Indian city software exporter following Bangalore, Hyderabad and the city is the home for 7 top rated IT companies out of 15 in India. The Tidel Park in Chennai was billed as Asia's largest IT park when it was built. Major software companies have their offices set up here, with some of them making Chennai their largest base. Chennai is the largest hub for e-publishing, as there are 67 e-publishing units registered with the STPI and many Rs.8300-Cr data centers, digital hubs are in the process of development. A major reason for the growth of the Software industry are the top engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu, of which Chennai is a major contributor, have been a major recruiting hub for the IT firms. According to estimates, these engineering colleges and universities consistently generate about 50 per cent of the human resource requirements for the IT and ITES industry was being sourced from the state, particularly from Chennai. The total employment in the Tamil Nadu’s technology sector crossed the one million mark in the quarter ended June 2022.

Its 6G service is in the works.

Tajpur Port is a proposed greenfield deep-sea port in Tajpur, East Midnapore district, West Bengal. The port will be built on the coast of Bay of Bengal near Tajpur. The construction of the port was awarded to the Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Limited in September, 2022. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee handed over Letter of Intent (LoI) to build the port to Karan Adani, son of Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani, at the "Bijaya Sammelani" organized on October 12, 2022 at Eco Park, New Town, Kolkata. After the construction of the port, it will be the first deep-sea port in West Bengal. It is estimated that the port will be constructed at a cost of ₹25,000 crores.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Data centre industry in India</span>

India has growing data centre industry. Data centers are used for national security, internet infrastructure, and economic output. As of 2024, India's data centre capacity is at 950 MW, which is expected to be 1800 MW by 2026. The data centre industry is valued at US$1.2 billion in 2021, a 216% growth from $385 million in 2014. The number of data centres in India is 138, as of March 2022. India ranks 13th globally in terms of highest number of data centres.

FinTech Hub is a financial, commercial centre and business district located in the CBD of New Town city, which lies outskirts of Kolkata under its metropolitan area in the state of West Bengal, India. The hub has the presence of a large number of banking, financial companies and legal institutions. Many major companies have their headquarters, offices and training centres operational or under construction.

Spread over an area of 150 Acres, it consists various electronics and IT parks. It is India's first fully integrated Electronics Complex, specialized for electronics, IT and BPO industry. The complex has 20 acres of SEZ land, allotted to Wipro.
