Bidhannagar is a planned urban agglomeration in the Indian state of West Bengal, and a satellite township of Kolkata. It falls in Greater Kolkata region and currently falls under the administration of the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation. Keeping with its original name, it is commonly referred to as Salt Lake City, and was planned and developed between 1958 and 1965 to accommodate the burgeoning population of Kolkata.

Located in the North-Eastern outskirts of the city, it was built in 1962 to provide speedy connection with the city and its sole airport. VIP Road is part of State Highway 3. To reduce traffic jams especially in the crossings of Kestopur and Baguiati, a flyover is constructed over the stretch between Dum Dum Park and Raghunathpur, which opened in March 2015. Another flyover connecting VIP Road with EM Bypass was opened in 2011, reducing traffic bottlenecks at Ultadanga crossing. This road is renamed after Kazi Nazrul Islam, a famous Bengali poet from India.

Kolkata Metro Line 6 or the Orange Line of the Kolkata Metro is an under-construction rapid transit line that will connect New Garia with Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport via two satellite towns Salt Lake and New Town. The line is targeted to open from Kavi Subhash to Hemanta Mukhopadhyay in 2023. This stretch will be one of the most important stretches of metro because it will connect the southern and the eastern parts of the city with Kolkata Airport. Total distance of this route will be 29.87 km (18.56 mi).
