Bettina Kay Ring (born October 16,1963) is an American agricultural expert who served as Virginia Secretary of Agriculture and Forestry under Governor Ralph Northam from 2018 to 2022. She previously served as the Virginia State Forester under Governor Terry McAuliffe from 2014 to 2018. [1] [2] [3]
Ring graduated from Virginia Tech with a degree in Forestry and Wildlife in 1986. She went onto join the Virginia Department of Forestry,where she initially worked as an area forester. [4] Early in her career,Ring did work in Greene County and northwestern Albemarle County. [5] In 2001,she earned a Master of Business Administration from James Madison University. [6] The same year,she left the Department of Forestry,having attained the rank of Deputy State Forester during her fourteen-year tenure there. [3] [4]
Relocating to the western United States,Ring then transitioned into non-profit work,serving in senior positions at the Colorado Coalition of Land Trusts,the Wilderness Land Trust and the Bay Area Open Space Council. [4] [6] In May 2012,Ring joined the American Forest Foundation in Washington D.C.,where she served as Senior Vice President of Family Forests [4] and oversaw the American Tree Farm System. [6]
Ring also co-founded the Virginia Natural Resources Leadership Institute. [6]
In 2014,Ring was appointed Virginia State Forester by Governor Terry McAuliffe. [6] Under Ring's leadership,the Virginia Department of Forestry sent over 100 first responders to assist in out of state emergencies throughout 2017,including a group of twenty who were sent to Texas in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. [7] [8] During her tenure as State Forester,Ring also led the National Association of State Foresters' legislative committee. [9]

Matthew James Lohr is an American politician. On January 15,2022 Lohr was sworn in by Governor Glenn Youngkin as Virginia's 5th Secretary of Agriculture and Forestry. In this role,he will serve in the governor's cabinet and oversee the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services,the Virginia Department of Forestry,and the Virginia Racing Commission. December 3,2018 he was appointed by Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue as the Chief of the Natural Resources Conservation Service,he served until January 20,2021. Lohr served in the Virginia House of Delegates from 2006–2010,representing the 26th district in the Shenandoah Valley,made up of the city of Harrisonburg and part of Rockingham County. From May 1,2010 until December 16,2013,he served as the 14th Commissioner of the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services under Governor Robert F. McDonnell. From December 2013 until June 2017,Lohr worked for Farm Credit of the Virginias as director of the Knowledge Center. In this position he facilitated the sharing of knowledge and resources for the betterment of all farmers.
Shannon Rutter Valentine served as the Secretary of Transportation for Virginia from 2018 to 2022. She was appointed Secretary of Transportation by Governor Ralph Northam in January 2018,and oversaw a $5 billion multimodal transportation system crossing seven agencies with more than 10,000 employees. As Secretary,she also serves as Chair of the Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB). Valentine served previously in the Virginia House of Delegates 2006–2010,representing the 23rd district,made up of the city of Lynchburg,Virginia and part of Amherst County,serving on the House Transportation and Courts of Justice Committees. Following an assignment as a Director of the Transportation Policy Council in 2013 for then Governor-elect Terry McAuliffe’s transition team,Valentine was appointed as the Lynchburg District representative to the CTB in May 2014. During this time,she created the first Regional Connectivity Study in Virginia that correlated transportation decisions with workforce,business expansion and recruitment and investment,covering eight modes of transportation. Her legislative priorities focused on transportation,economic development,education,and ethics. She led bipartisan efforts to create transparent government,expand clean energy production,and invest in intercity passenger rail service for the first time in Virginia’s history. She is a member of the Democratic Party.

The Virginia Governor's Cabinet is a body of the most senior appointed officers of the executive branch of the government of Virginia. The Cabinet is responsible for advising the Governor of Virginia. Cabinet officers are nominated by the Governor and then presented to the Virginia General Assembly for confirmation. Democrats held the governorship in Virginia and picked up the governorship of New Jersey.

After the party primary elections were held,the major party nominees were Jill Vogel (Republican) and Justin Fairfax (Democrat). The incumbent Lieutenant Governor,Democrat Ralph Northam,declined to run for re-election in order to run for Governor. In the general election on November 7,2017,Democratic nominee Justin Fairfax defeated Republican state Senator Jill Vogel to become the 41st Lieutenant Governor of Virginia.
Kelly Teal Thomasson Mercer is an American Democratic politician,who served as the Secretary of the Commonwealth of Virginia from April 2016 to January 2022. Initially appointed by Governor Terry McAuliffe,she continued as Secretary under the administration of Governor Ralph Northam. Dr.Basil Ivanhoe Gooden is an American governmental executive whose career has advanced equitable food systems,agriculture policy,public health,and community economic development in rural America. Dr. Gooden served as the 3rd Virginia Secretary of Agriculture and Forestry for the Commonwealth of Virginia in the cabinet of Governor Terry McAuliffe. He became the first Black American to serve in this position and during his tenure from September 2016 until January 2018,he was the only Black American Secretary of Agriculture in any state in the United States. In his capacity as Secretary,he provided strategic vision and leadership to two of Virginia's largest private industries,Agriculture and Forestry,with an annual economic impact of $91 billion on the Commonwealth.
