Shannon Rutter Valentine (born January 31,1959) is an American politician who served as the Secretary of Transportation for Virginia from 2018 to 2022.

In January 2018,Valentine was appointed Secretary of Transportation by Governor Ralph Northam. [4] As Secretary,she also serves as Chair of the Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB). [4] [5] She oversaw a $5 billion multimodal transportation system crossing seven agencies with more than 10,000 employees. As Secretary,she also serves as Chair of the Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB). Valentine served previously in the Virginia House of Delegates 2006–2010,representing the 23rd district,made up of the city of Lynchburg,Virginia and part of Amherst County,serving on the House Transportation and Courts of Justice Committees. Following an assignment as a Director of the Transportation Policy Council in 2013 for then Governor-elect Terry McAuliffe's transition team,Valentine was appointed as the Lynchburg District representative to the CTB in May 2014. During this time,she created the first Regional Connectivity Study in Virginia that correlated transportation decisions with workforce,business expansion and recruitment and investment,covering eight modes of transportation. Her legislative priorities focused on transportation,economic development,education,and ethics. She led bipartisan efforts to create transparent government,expand clean energy production,and invest in intercity passenger rail service for the first time in Virginia's history. She is a member of the Democratic Party. [6]
Valentine was born in Wilmington,Delaware,on January 31,1959,and is married to Carl Michael Valentine. They have three children. Valentine graduated from the University of Virginia with a bachelor's in economics. [7] [8] She also graduated from the Sorensen Institute for Political leadership and completed an Education for Ministry certificate course through Sewanee University's School of Theology. [8] [5] [9]
Valentine was named 2017 Transportation Woman of the Year by WTS Central Virginia Chapter. She has also been honored with the Humanitarian Award by the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities,Democracy in Action Award by the League of Women Voters,Freedom Fighter Award by the NAACP,Woman of the Year in Government by the YWCA, [10] and the Commonwealth Autism Services Award. Katherine Keith "Kate" Hanley is an American Democratic politician in Virginia currently serving as Secretary of the Fairfax County Electoral Board. She previously served as Secretary of the Commonwealth of Virginia from 2006 to 2010,Chairman of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors from 1995 to 2003,as a County Supervisor for the Providence District from 1986 to 1995,and on the Fairfax County School Board from 1984 to 1986.

Ralph Shearer Northam is an American physician and politician who was the 73rd governor of Virginia from 2018 to 2022. A pediatric neurologist by occupation,he was an officer in the U.S. Army Medical Corps from 1984 to 1992. Northam,a member of the Democratic Party,was the 40th lieutenant governor of Virginia from 2014 to 2018 before winning the governorship against the Republican nominee Ed Gillespie in the 2017 election. Prohibited by the Virginia Constitution from running for a consecutive term,Northam left office in January 2022 and was succeeded by the Republican Glenn Youngkin.
Vivian Edna Watts is an American politician who is serving as a Democrat in the Virginia House of Delegates. She currently represents the 39th district,which includes part of Fairfax County.
Paula Jean Miller is an American politician. She was a Democratic member of the Virginia House of Delegates 2005–2012,representing the 87th district in the city of Norfolk. She ran unsuccessfully for the Democratic nomination for the special election to fill the seat being vacated by Ralph Northam,who was elected Lieutenant Governor of Virginia,in the Virginia Senate,District 6,representing portions of Norfolk,the Eastern Shore,and Virginia Beach. She lost to fellow delegate Lynwood Lewis.
Lynwood Wayne Lewis Jr. is an American politician and lawyer. A Democrat,he was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates in November 2003,representing the 100th district,which consists of the Eastern Shore counties of Accomack and Northampton,and parts of the cities of Norfolk and Hampton.

A Republican and a former high school teacher,he served in the Virginia House of Delegates from 1990 to 2022,representing the 66th District. From 2018 to 2020,he served as the 55th Speaker of the House of Delegates. Cox served as House Majority Leader from 2010 to 2018 and House Majority Whip from 2004 to 2010.

In the general election on November 7,2017,Democratic nominee Justin Fairfax defeated Republican state Senator Jill Vogel to become the 41st Lieutenant Governor of Virginia.
The 2017 Virginia Attorney General election was held on November 7,2017. The incumbent attorney general,Democrat Mark Herring,was expected to run for governor,but announced he would run for re-election instead. As only Herring and Republican John Adams qualified for their respective party primaries,the two automatically became their parties' nominees. In the general election,Herring defeated Adams to win a second term as Attorney General of Virginia.
The 2018 United States House of Representatives elections in Virginia were held on November 6,2018,to elect the 11 U.S. representatives from the state of Virginia,one from each of the state's 11 congressional districts. The elections coincided with other states' elections to the House of Representatives,elections to the United States Senate and various state and local elections. Primary elections took place on June 12.
The 2021 Virginia gubernatorial election was held on November 2,2021,to elect the next governor of Virginia. The election was concurrent with other elections for Virginia state offices. Incumbent Democratic governor Ralph Northam was ineligible to run for re-election,as the Constitution of Virginia prohibits governors from serving consecutive terms. Businessman Glenn Youngkin won the Republican nomination at the party's May 8 convention,which was held in 37 polling locations across the state,and was officially declared the nominee on May 10. The Democratic Party held its primary election on June 8,which former governor Terry McAuliffe easily won.

Incumbent Democratic Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax was eligible to run for a second term,but instead unsuccessfully ran for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination. On November 3,Hala Ayala conceded the race,making Republican Winsome Sears the first black woman to be elected to the lieutenant governorship of Virginia or any statewide office,as well as the first woman elected lieutenant governor in Virginia's history. Sears was also the first Jamaican-American to become a lieutenant governor.
The 2021 Virginia attorney general election was held on November 2,2021,to elect the next attorney general of Virginia. Democratic Attorney General Mark Herring attempted to win a third term. Herring initially planned to run for governor,but decided to run for re-election. Herring faced Republican nominee Jason Miyares in the general election. Herring conceded defeat at 5:02 PM EST the following day,November 3. Miyares became the first Cuban-American and Hispanic to be elected to statewide office in Virginia. Miyares was later sworn in on January 15,2022.
The 2025 Virginia gubernatorial election will be held on November 4,2025. Incumbent Republican Governor Glenn Youngkin will be ineligible to run for re-election,as the Constitution of Virginia prohibits the state's governors from serving consecutive terms. Primary elections will take place on June 17,2025.
The 2025 Virginia Attorney General election will be held on November 4,2025,to elect the next attorney general of Virginia. Incumbent Republican Attorney General Jason Miyares is running for re-election.
