"Betty" is a song by New Zealand recording artist, Brooke Fraser. Written by Fraser with Jon Foreman and Ben West, and produced by Fraser, the pop rock record centres on a girl who hides behind scars and birthmarks. The song was released on 6 December 2010 as the second single from Fraser's third studio album, Flags . "Betty" received generally positive reviews from critics, and has peaked at number thirty on the New Zealand Singles Chart. The accompanying music video takes place in a flower garden, and features lifelike paper birds.

Background and composition

"Betty" was written by Brooke Fraser, Jon Foreman and Ben West, [1] and, like the other tracks on Flags , Fraser produced the tune herself. [2] The song draws from the genre of pop rock, [3] and features a snap rhythm. [4] [5] "Betty" has a theme of isolation, [6] and "tells the story of a lonely girl hiding behind 'scars and birthmarks'," [4] including one shaped like Canada. [3]

Release and reception

"Betty" was released as a digital download on 6 December 2010 in New Zealand. [7] Christianity Today 's John Brandon noted "Betty" as one of the top tracks on Flags. [4] Tom Cardy from The Dominion Post lauded its musical and lyrical depth, [8] and Lindsay Whitfield of Soulshine praised its "catchy" rhythm. [5]

"Betty" entered the New Zealand Singles Chart at number thirty-eight on 24 January 2011, [9] and remained in the position the next week. [10] The song would go on to peak at number thirty in its third charting week, remaining on the charts for 5 weeks total. [11]

Music video

The accompanying music video for "Betty" debuted on Nightline on 29 November 2010. [12] The video takes place in an indoor flower garden. Fraser wears a strapless silver dress, black stockings and purple eye-shadow, with her hair tied in a bun. She dances among the garden, admiring the flowers. Origami birds are seen moving as though living amongst the flowers, and, in the chorus, surround Fraser. The video closes with Fraser observing a paper bird flying away.

Brooke Gabrielle Ligertwood better known by her maiden name Brooke Fraser, is a New Zealand singer and songwriter best known for her hit single "Something in the Water", released in 2010. 2010 New Zealand Music Awards

The 2010 New Zealand Music Awards was the 45th holding of the annual ceremony featuring awards for musical artists based in or originating from New Zealand. Finalists for the three technical awards were announced on 16 August 2010 with winners announced on 1 September, the date on which finalists for 16 'non-technical' categories were revealed. Five 'non-technical' awards were presented without a group of finalists being selected. The awards ceremony took place on 7 October 2010 at Vector Arena, Auckland. Hosted by television presenter Shannon Ryan and comedian Ben Hurley, the ceremony was broadcast on television channel C4. Various musicians, most of whom had been nominated for awards, performed songs on the awards night.

The eldest daughter of All Black Bernie Fraser, she was musically active throughout her childhood, and was signed to Sony BMG in 2002. Her first single was "Better", which peaked at number three on the New Zealand Singles Chart. "Better" was included on her first album, What to Do with Daylight, which was released in 2003. Debuting at number one on the New Zealand Albums Chart, the album was eventually certified seven times platinum in New Zealand. As well as "Better", What to Do with Daylight spawned the singles "Lifeline", "Saving the World", "Arithmetic" and "Without You", all of which reached the top 20 of the New Zealand Singles Chart. "Lifeline" also appeared on the Australian Singles Chart, peaking at number fifty-six.
