The Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism/Architecture,also known as the Urbanism\Architecture Bi-City Biennale (UABB) of Shenzhen and Hong Kong,was founded in 2005. It has been held every two years since. It is considered the world's only Biennale or Biennial exhibition to focus specifically on urbanism and urbanisation.
The Biennale is a cooperative cultural event that is shared by the two cities under a similar theme. The selection process of the Hong Kong and Shenzhen curatorial teams are independent processes governed by different procedures and organisations. [1] The exhibition also takes place in different venues in Hong Kong and Shenzhen,with different exhibitors,during similar but slightly differing time periods.
Originally organised by the Shenzhen Public Art Center,the inaugural Biennale took place in Shenzhen and attracted over a million visitors. [2] The Biennale started being organised in Hong Kong in January 2008,with the exhibition "Refabricating City" at the Central Police Station Compound. [3]

Hong Kong has a highly developed transport network, encompassing both public and private transport. Based on Hong Kong Government's Travel Characteristics Survey, over 90% of daily journeys are on public transport, the highest rate in the world. However, in 2014 the Transport Advisory Committee, which advises the Government on transportation issues, issued a report on the much-worsened congestion problem in Hong Kong and pointed at the excessive growth of private cars during the past 10–15 years.
Shenzhen is a city and special economic zone on the east bank of the Pearl River estuary on the central coast of the southern Chinese province of Guangdong, bordering Hong Kong to the south, Dongguan to the north, and Huizhou to the northeast. With a population of 17.56 million in 2020, Shenzhen is the third most populous city by urban population in China after Shanghai and Beijing. Shenzhen is a global center in technology, research, manufacturing, business and economics, finance, tourism and transportation, and the Port of Shenzhen is the world's fourth busiest container port.
The West Kowloon Cultural District is a large arts development in Hong Kong. Designed and planned by Foster and Partners, the district comprises 40 hectares with 17 venues. Major establishments include Xiqu Centre for Chinese opera, the Freespace Centre for contemporary performance, the M+ Museum, and the Hong Kong Palace Museum. As of 2023, the Lyric Theatre and other commercial structures are under construction. It is managed by the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority (WKCDA).
Venice Biennale of Architecture is an international exhibition of architecture from nations around the world, held in Venice, Italy, every other year. It was held on even years until 2018, but 2020 was postponed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic shifting the calendar to uneven years. It is the architecture section under the overall Venice Biennale and was officially established in 1980, even though architecture had been a part of the Venice Art Biennale since 1968.
Nanshan District is one of the nine districts comprising Shenzhen. It encompasses the southwest area of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, with a population of 1.08 million. In 2022, the district of Nanshan's local GDP output exceeded 800 billion Chinese Yuan or 111 billion U.S. dollars, an economy slightly larger than that of Cuba or Oman. The region has an established tourism industry and is home to several sightseeing locations, as well as multiple seaside parks such as the Shenzhen Bay Park and the Shenzhen Talent Park. Its tallest building is the 393-meter China Resources Headquarters.
The Port of Shenzhen is the collective name of a number of ports the coastline of Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, China. These ports as a whole form one of the busiest and fastest growing container ports in the world.
Aedas is an architectural firm with eleven International offices founded by the Welsh architect Keith Griffiths. Aedas provides services in architecture, interior design, urban design, masterplanning and graphic design. It was established in 2002.
Ou Ning is a Chinese artist, film maker, curator, writer, publisher and activist. He is the director of two films San Yuan Li (2003) and Meishi Street (2005), chief curator of Shenzhen and Hong Kong Bi-city Biennale of Urbanism \ Architecture (2009), founding chief editor of the literary bimonthly Chutzpah!, founder of Bishan Commune (2011-2016) and School of Tillers (2015-2016). He taught at GSAPP, Columbia University and worked as the founding curator of Kwan-Yen Project from 2016 to 2017.
West Kowloon station, also known as Hong Kong West Kowloon, is the southern terminus of and the only station on the Hong Kong section of the Guangshengang XRL. The station connects to China's high-speed rail (HSR) network across the border through dedicated tunnels and includes a Mainland Port Area where the laws of (Mainland) China are enforced. It was constructed by the MTR Corporation Limited as the project manager commissioned by the Hong Kong Government, through subcontractors.
The Hong Kong Dragon Garden is an 8 hectares private heritage garden located at No. 32-42 Castle Peak Road, Tsing Lung Tau, in the backdrop of Sham Tseng in the west of the Tsuen Wan District in the New Territories of Hong Kong, founded by Lee Iu-cheung.
Ma Yansong is a Chinese architect and founder of MAD architects. He serves as adjunct professor at School of Architecture, Tsinghua University, and the visiting professor at Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture.
Guangzhou–Shenzhen–Hong Kong Express Rail Link (XRL), also known as the Guangshengang XRL, is a high-speed railway line that connects Beijing and Hong Kong (Kowloon) via Guangzhou and Shenzhen.
Nikita Wu is a Taiwanese writer and arts manager. She was the curator of the Future Pavilion in the Taiwan Design Expo 2005 and a project manager in the Taiwan Pavilion of the Venice Biennale 2006, for WEAK! architects in the 2009 Shenzhen & Hong Kong Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism/Architecture and in co-operation with the JUT Foundation for Arts & Architecture for the independent research centre Ruin Academy in Taipei.
Kingsley Ng is an interdisciplinary artist working primarily on conceptual, site-specific and community-oriented projects. Ng crafts relationship between the work and its context through media and formats including interactive installation, public workshop, sound, spatial design and experiential design.
The Shanghai Biennale is one of the highest-profile contemporary art events in Shanghai and the most established art biennale in China. It was initially held in the Shanghai Art Museum. From 2012 on, it has been hosted in Power Station of Art, the first state-run museum dedicated to contemporary art in mainland China. Shanghai Biennale provides artists, curators, writers and art supporters from around the world with a space to meet and exchange ideas about their experiences, works and inspirations to create international dialogues. It highlights the achievements of Asian artistic creativity and production and challenges the conventional division of the world between East and West. Aside from its main museum show, it also includes talks, lectures and installations in various venues throughout the city.

Ronald Lu & Partners is a Hong Kong architecture and interior design firm founded by Ronald Lu in 1976. The practice provides architecture, interior design and master planning services in various sectors including culture and community, education, mix-used, commercial, residential, hotel and retail and transit-oriented development.
Ole Bouman is a Dutch German historian, writer, curator in urbanism design and architecture. Bouman is the founding director of Design Society, an initiative of China Merchants Group and the Victoria and Albert Museum in Shenzhen, which opened in December 2017.
