Big Bird in Japan is a television special by the Children's Television Workshop (now Sesame Workshop), that aired on NHK in late fall of 1988, and on PBS on January 16, 1989. [1] It is the sequel to Big Bird in China which was also based on the popular television series Sesame Street . It depicts Big Bird and Barkley visiting some Japanese guests, counting to 3 in Japanese and teaching Japanese words. This television special was filmed in Kyoto and Tokyo in 1988. Backed by significant funding from Japanese corporations, [2] the program was produced with the help of NHK.
Separated from their guided tour group while in Japan, Big Bird and Barkley find help from a friendly but mysterious young woman who is planning to leave Japan at the same time they will be, and from the same town, Kyoto. She offers to take the pair to Kyoto as she says goodbye to family and friends along the way.
Big Bird witnesses some of Japan's beauty, its landscape and culture, with the help of the young woman and the friends of hers he stays with. She introduces him to a Japanese family, and teaches him some simple Japanese vocabulary (e.g. ohayō (おはよう) = "good morning"). Big Bird is increasingly vexed by his not having learned the young woman's name, and that she has a tendency to have disappeared quite suddenly when he turns to speak to her. One night, finding difficulty in sleeping on a futon, he happens to catch sight of her standing in the garden, singing an achingly melancholy song to the Moon.
Attending an elementary school on the day he, Barkley and their mysterious helper are supposed to leave on the Shinkansen for Kyoto, Big Bird is treated to The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter as acted out by some of the students. One of the highlights of the special, Big Bird (and the viewing audience) learns the story of Kaguya-hime, a young girl found in a shining bamboo stump, who later reveals herself as a magical princess to her adopted family. She then must return to the Moon and leave her adoptive family behind.
Big Bird and Barkley arrive at the Shinkansen station almost too late, and their worried companion scolds them lightly once they're on board. Once they disembark, she orders them to stay put so that they don't get lost and miss meeting up with their tour. But Big Bird and Barkley are much too intrigued by their surroundings, and end up at the Sanjusangendo Temple. Barkley becomes frightened by the statues inside and runs away, with a distraught Big Bird in pursuit.
Long after dark Big Bird returns to the spot where their young guide had told them to stay. Finding her there, he apologizes in shame, explaining what happened. The young woman forgives Big Bird, and reveals that she has found Barkley and also located their tour, which is now certain to wait for the wayward pair. Big Bird, trying to find the words to thank her, says that he doesn't even know her name. Her name is revealed to be Kaguya-hime, their guide says softly.
After their last thank yous and goodbyes, Big Bird suddenly recalls where he'd heard the name before, and rushes off to find her. However, Kaguya-hime is walking, trance-like, through the deep green of a bamboo forest. Seven imposing men in 10th century garb enter from all sides. To chilling effect, they are colorless. They surround her, and upon drawing back, reveal a young girl in jūnihitoe (ceremonial costume). She turns colorless as well, and the procession marches slowly from the clearing to the movie's most majestic music.
Big Bird and Barkley arrive on the scene, seeing no one else. Big Bird convinces himself that he was just being silly, thinking the friendly young woman really could be the Bamboo Princess. Safely in a plane going home to Sesame Street, Big Bird reminisces on everything he has learned during his adventure, while through Big Bird's window, unseen, Kaguya-hime's procession walks in stately elegance across the face of the full moon. As the closing credits roll, the bamboo forest is revisited, and the shining bamboo stump that Kaguya-hime had come from is revealed.
Big Bird in Japan is considered noteworthy in folkloric studies for introducing The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter to audiences outside Japan. [3] The special has been praised for its respectful use of humor and parody, giving 1980s American children and adults an overview of everyday life in bubble-era Japan that was starkly different from the media's fixation on Japanese corporate culture. Japanese literature throughout most of its history has been influenced by cultural contact with neighboring Asian literatures, most notably China and its literature. Early texts were often written in pure Classical Chinese or lit. 'Chinese writing', a Chinese-Japanese creole language. Indian literature also had an influence through the spread of Buddhism in Japan.
Japanese folktales are an important cultural aspect of Japan. In commonplace usage, they signify a certain set of well-known classic tales, with a vague distinction of whether they fit the rigorous definition of "folktale" or not among various types of folklore. The admixed impostors are literate written pieces, dating back to the Muromachi period or even earlier times in the Middle Ages. These would not normally qualify for the English description "folktales".
Konjaku Monogatarishū, also known as the Konjaku Monogatari (今昔物語), is a Japanese collection of over one thousand tales written during the late Heian period (794–1185). The entire collection was originally contained in 31 volumes, of which 28 remain today. The volumes cover various tales from India, China and Japan. Detailed evidence of lost monogatari exist in the form of literary critique, which can be studied to reconstruct the objects of their critique to some extent.

It was originally broadcast on May 29, 1983, on NBC. Big Bird, Barkley and Little Xiao Fu travel through China to find Feng Huang, the Phoenix bird.
Hime is the Japanese word for princess or a lady of higher birth. Daughters of a monarch are actually referred to by other terms, e.g. Ōjo (王女), literally king's daughter, even though Hime can be used to address Ōjo.
Planet Ladder is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Yuri Narushima. Sailor Moon S: The Movie is a 1994 Japanese animated superhero fantasy film directed by Hiroki Shibata and written by Sukehiro Tomita based on the Sailor Moon manga series by Naoko Takeuchi. Produced by Toei Animation, it takes its name from the third season of the anime series, as Toei Company distributed it around the same time, and the second film installment for the series, following Sailor Moon R: The Movie (1993). Loosely adapting The Lover of Princess Kaguya side story from the manga, it centers the Sailor Guardians stopping the invasion of the snow queen named Kaguya, while Luna falls in love with a human astronomer named Kakeru. The film stars Kotono Mitsuishi as the voice of Sailor Moon, alongside Aya Hisakawa, Michie Tomizawa, Emi Shinohara, Rika Fukami, Megumi Ogata, Masako Katsuki, Chiyoko Kawashima, Keiko Han, Kae Araki and Tōru Furuya. It was released in Japan on December 4, 1994, as part of the Winter '94 Toei Anime Fair.
Musashi Gundoh is a Japanese anime television series, based on an unused story by Monkey Punch. It premiered in Japan on the satellite station BS-i on April 9, 2006, and was also set to be broadcast across Japan by the anime satellite television network Animax from October 2006. It is also legally distributed over the Internet by GyaO from May 13, 2006. According to the producer, there were originally plans to broadcast the anime overseas, but they were scrapped due to poor reception of the anime.

Queen Millennia is a manga series by Leiji Matsumoto which was serialized from 28 January 1980 through 11 May 1983 in both the Sankei Shimbun and Nishinippon Sports newspapers. The manga series was adapted into a 42-episode anime television series by Toei Dōga and broadcast on the Fuji TV network from 16 April 1981 through 25 March 1982. An anime film was released on 13 March 1982 shortly before the TV series ended.

Queen's Blade Grimoire is a series of visual combat books published by Hobby Japan. It is the fourth series of gamebooks in the Queen's Blade series, but unlike Queen's Blade and its sequel, Queen's Blade Rebellion, which are directly linked to each other, Grimoire is an all-new story set in a parallel universe. Princess from the Moon is a 1987 Japanese film directed by Kon Ichikawa. It is based on The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, a 10th-century Japanese fairy tale about a girl from the Moon who is discovered as a baby inside the stalk of a glowing bamboo plant.
Kaguya-sama: Love Is War is a Japanese romantic comedy manga series written and illustrated by Aka Akasaka. It was first serialized in Shueisha's seinen manga magazine Miracle Jump from May 2015 to January 2016, and later transferred to Weekly Young Jump, where it ran from March 2016 to November 2022. Its chapters were collected in 28 tankōbon volumes. In North America, the manga is licensed in English by Viz Media.
Prince Kaguya (プリンス・カグヤ) is a Japanese musical based on the fictional prose narrative, The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter. It was premiered on November 28, 2015, at the Hakuhinkan Theater in Tokyo, where its functions were held until December 6. Between December 12 and 13, three functions were held at the Matsushita IMP Hall, Osaka. It starred Shouta Aoi, Masato Saki, Yūki Fujiwara, Nozomu Masuzawa and Naomi Akimoto. The main theme is "Murasaki" sung by Shouta Aoi. Despite being based on a classic story, the work incorporates aspects of modern culture and Kaguya's gender was changed from female to male.
Princess Kaguya is a 1935 Japanese musical drama film directed by Yoshitsugu Tanaka, with cinematography and special effects by Eiji Tsuburaya. Produced by J.O. Studios, it is based on the 10th century Japanese literary tale The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter. In the film, Princess Kaguya was raised by a couple who spread rumors that she had ascended a mountain in order to deceive suitors and ran away with her son and the princess. The film was considered lost until the British Film Institute found a 35mm cut in May 2015.
Tanaka Ōhide (1777-1847) was a Japanese antiquary, folklorist, lexicographer, ethnographer, and scholar of the nationalist kokugaku movement. He is best known for his commentary on the Taketori Monogatari.
Japanese companies are even coming up with much of the $1 million needed for Children's Television Workshop to film a program called Big Bird in Japan.
Outside Japan, Taketori monogatari also plays a major part in Big Bird in Japan (1991), an American made-for-television movie linked to Jim Henson's Sesame Street.
