Bill Kartalopoulos is a New York-based comics critic, educator, curator and editor. From 2014 to 2019 he was the Series Editor for the Best American Comics series of annual comics anthologies published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. He was a co-founder of the Brooklyn Comics and Graphics Festival and has also directed programming for the Small Press Expo and the MoCCA Festival. He teaches courses about comics at Parsons School of Design and the School of Visual Arts.
Kartalopoulos graduated from Dartmouth College, where he co-founded the student comics anthology Vox Pop Comix. [2] In 2002, he launched a comics newsblog called EGON and from 2004 to 2005 served as the editor of Indy Magazine, an online magazine about comics. [3] Features for that publication included an extensive two-part history of RAW Magazine for which Kartalopoulos conducted interviews with Françoise Mouly, Charles Burns, Kim Deitch, Gary Panter, Art Spiegelman, Chris Ware, and others. Comics journalist Tom Spurgeon wrote that "Kartalopoulos engineered both this decade's best on-line, magazine-style effort about comics (Indy Magazine), and its most useful support web site (EGON)." [4] In 2005 Indy Magazine was nominated for both the Harvey Award [5] and the Eisner Award. [6] Subsequently, he worked for several years as Spiegelman's studio assistant. In 2013 he completed a master's degree in media studies at The New School. [7]
Kartalopoulos has worked extensively organizing comics festivals, with emphases on programming and international guests. In 2006 he began working as programming coordinator for the Small Press Expo [8] and continued in that role through 2014. [9] In 2006, comics journalist Heidi MacDonald wrote: "Bill Kartalopoulos did the programming... and he definitely elevated it to the level that a serious festival of intelligent comics needed." [9] In 2009, he co-founded the Brooklyn Comics and Graphics Festival (BCGF) with Desert Island owner Gabe Fowler and PictureBox publisher Dan Nadel. [10] For the 2012 edition of the BCGF, Kartalopoulos conducted a conversation with Richard McGuire, Spiegelman, and Ware at the Knitting Factory and organized international programming featuring guests from France, Belgium, Finland, Mexico and Croatia. [11] [12] The BCGF concluded as an ongoing project in 2013. [13] Since 2014, Kartalopoulos has been the Programming Director for the MoCCA Festival, organized annually in Manhattan by the Society of Illustrators. [14] Kartalopoulos has continued to feature international artists at this event, including Dutch artist Joost Swarte, Belgian artist Brecht Vandenbroucke, and French artists including Yvan Alagbé, Marion Fayolle, Annie Goetzinger, Florent Ruppert, and others. From 2014 to 2019 Kartalopoulos was the Series Editor for the Best American Comics series published annually by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. In that role, he collaborated each year with a selected Guest Editor:
The Best American Comics series appeared regularly on the New York Times Hardcover Graphic Books list during Kartalopoulos's tenure, with the 2016 edition entering the list at #1. [16] In September 2020, Kartalopoulos announced that the series was one of several "Best American" titles that had been cancelled by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. [17] These cancellations came as part of several waves of cutbacks prior to the publisher's eventual sale to HarperCollins. [18] [19]
In addition to his tenure editing Best American Comics , Kartalopoulos has also edited a number of other book and periodical projects. Kartalopoulos edited and published a 2013 English-language edition of Florent Ruppert and Jérôme Mulot's 2006 graphic novel Panier de singe, which won the Prix Révélation at the Angoulême International Comics Festival. Kartalopoulos published the book in North America as Barrel of Monkeys under his own Rebus Books imprint, operating out of a live/work space in Williamsburg, Brooklyn called "Cartoon House" for its high concentration of comics artists and professionals. [20] [21] Critic Daniel Levin Becker named Barrel of Monkeys his top book of the year for Salon.com, calling the book "so blackly funny, so morbid and joyously awful, that it would be completely appalling if it weren't carried off just right. [22] " Slate books editor Dan Kois named the book among his top 15 books of the year. [23]
In 2016, he edited and designed After Nothing Comes, a collection of formative zines by Aidan Koch, for Koyama Press. [24] Artforum called the book "an exciting break from the traditional graphic-novel medium. [25] Writing for Thrillist, critic Sean T. Collins named the book among the "33 Greatest Graphic Novels of All Time. [26] "
Kartalopoulos guest-edited the March 2016 issue of World Literature Today , focusing on international comics. [27] He also guest-edited the February–March 2015 comics-themed issue of the American Book Review , featuring contributions from Austin English, John Hankiewicz, Nicole Rudick, Dash Shaw, and others. Kartalopoulos additionally served as Associate Editor for Multimedia on Art Spiegelman's 2012 book MetaMaus , which included a DVD with video, audio, photos, and an interactive version of Maus . [29] He also worked as a production and editorial assistant for the first two seasons of Françoise Mouly's TOON Books imprint of comics for early readers.
Kartalopoulos has curated a number of comics-related exhibits in the US and internationally, showing work by artists including Lynda Barry, Alexis Beauclair, Kim Deitch, Aidan Koch, Javier Mariscal, Richard McGuire, Son Ni, Paper Rad, Raymond Pettibon, Deb Sokolow, Saul Steinberg, Chris Ware, and others. Kartalopoulos teaches undergraduate courses about comics at Parsons. [36] He also teaches in the MFA Visual Narrative program at the School of Visual Arts. [37]

Kartalopoulos is a frequent public speaker about comics. Two of his public discussions, on the subject of comics and post-war avant-garde art, were delivered as part of Ben Katchor's New York Comics and Picture-Story Symposium and are archived online. [41] [42]
Kartalopoulos has been working on a book about comics to be published by Princeton University Press in 2024. [7]
Underground comix are small press or self-published comic books that are often socially relevant or satirical in nature. They differ from mainstream comics in depicting content forbidden to mainstream publications by the Comics Code Authority, including explicit drug use, sexuality, and violence. They were most popular in the United States in the late 1960s and 1970s, and in the United Kingdom in the 1970s.
Itzhak Avraham ben Zeev Spiegelman, professionally known as Art Spiegelman, is an American cartoonist, editor, and comics advocate best known for his graphic novel Maus. His work as co-editor on the comics magazines Arcade and Raw has been influential, and from 1992 he spent a decade as contributing artist for The New Yorker. He is married to designer and editor Françoise Mouly and is the father of writer Nadja Spiegelman. In September 2022, the National Book Foundation announced that he would receive the Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters.
Kim Deitch is an American cartoonist who was an important figure in the underground comix movement of the 1960s, remaining active in the decades that followed with a variety of books and comics, sometimes using the pseudonym Fowlton Means.
Raw was a comics anthology edited by Art Spiegelman and Françoise Mouly and published in the United States by Mouly from 1980 to 1991. It was a flagship publication of the 1980s alternative comics movement, serving as a more intellectual counterpoint to Robert Crumb's visceral Weirdo, which followed squarely in the underground tradition of Zap and Arcade. Along with the more genre-oriented Heavy Metal it was also one of the main venues for European comics in the United States in its day.
William Henry Jackson Griffith is an American cartoonist who signs his work Bill Griffith and Griffy. He is best known for his surreal daily comic strip Zippy. The catchphrase "Are we having fun yet?" is credited to Griffith.
Françoise Mouly is a French-born American designer, editor and publisher. She is best known as co-founder, co-editor, and publisher of the comics and graphics magazine Raw (1980–1991), as the publisher of Raw Books and Toon Books, and since 1993 as the art editor of The New Yorker. Mouly is married to cartoonist Art Spiegelman, and is the mother of writer Nadja Spiegelman.
Denis Kitchen is an American underground cartoonist, publisher, author, agent, and the founder of the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund.
Jay Patrick Lynch was an American cartoonist who played a key role in the underground comix movement with his Bijou Funnies and other titles. He is best known for his comic strip Nard n' Pat and the running gag Um tut sut. His work is sometimes signed Jayzey Lynch. Lynch was the main writer for Bazooka Joe comics from 1967 to 1990; he contributed to Mad, and in the 2000s expanded into the children's book field.
Heidi MacDonald is an American writer and editor of comic books based in New York City. She runs the comics industry news blog The Beat.
City of Glass: The Graphic Novel, by Paul Karasik and David Mazzucchelli, is a comics adaptation of American author Paul Auster's novella City of Glass.
Diane Robin Noomin was an American comics artist associated with the underground comics movement. She is best known for her character DiDi Glitz, who addresses transgressive social issues such as feminism, female masturbation, body image, and miscarriages.
Paul Karasik is an American cartoonist, editor, and teacher, notable for his contributions to such works as City of Glass: The Graphic Novel, The Ride Together: A Memoir of Autism in the Family, and Turn Loose Our Death Rays and Kill Them All!. He is the coauthor, with Mark Newgarden, of How to Read Nancy, 2018 winner of the Eisner Award for "Best Comics-Related Book". His work has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post and he is also an occasional cartoonist for The New Yorker.
Bijou Funnies was an American underground comix magazine which published eight issues between 1968 and 1973. Edited by Chicago-based cartoonist Jay Lynch, Bijou Funnies featured strong work by the core group of Lynch, Skip Williamson, Robert Crumb, and Jay Kinney, as well as Art Spiegelman, Gilbert Shelton, Justin Green, and Kim Deitch. Bijou Funnies was heavily influenced by Mad magazine, and, along with Zap Comix, is considered one of the titles to launch the underground comix movement.
Roger Brand was an American cartoonist who created stories for both mainstream and underground comic books. His work showed a fascination with horror and eroticism, often combining the two.
Donald Richard Donahue was a comic book publisher, operating under the name Apex Novelties, one of the instigators of the underground comix movement in the 1960s.
Comics journalism is a form of journalism that covers news or nonfiction events using the framework of comics, a combination of words and drawn images. Typically, sources are actual people featured in each story, and word balloons are actual quotes. The term "comics journalism" was coined by one of its most notable practitioners, Joe Sacco. Other terms for the practice include "graphic journalism," "comic strip journalism", "cartoon journalism", "cartoon reporting", "comics reportage", "journalistic comics", "sequential reportage," and "sketchbook reports".
Gary Edson Arlington was an American retailer, artist, editor, and publisher, who became a key figure in the underground comix movement of the 1960s and 1970s. As owner of one of America's first comic book stores, the San Francisco Comic Book Company, located in San Francisco's Mission District, Arlington's establishment became a focal point for the Bay Area's underground artists. He published comics under the name San Francisco Comic Book Company, as well as publishing and distributing comics under the name Eric Fromm. Cartoonist Robert Crumb has noted, "Gary made a cultural contribution in San Francisco in the late 1960s, through the '70s, '80s & '90s that was more significant than he realizes."
Cartoonists Co-op Press was an underground comix publishing cooperative based in San Francisco that operated from 1973 to 1974. It was a self-publishing venture by cartoonists Kim Deitch, Bill Griffith, Jerry Lane, Jay Lynch, Willy Murphy, Diane Noomin, and Art Spiegelman. Cartoonist Justin Green's brother Keith acted as salesman/distributor, and the operation was run out of Griffith's apartment.
My Favorite Thing Is Monsters is a two-volume debut graphic novel by American writer Emil Ferris. It portrays a young girl named Karen Reyes investigating the death of her neighbor in 1960s Chicago. Ferris started working on the graphic novel after contracting West Nile virus and becoming paralyzed at age forty. She attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago for writing and began the graphic novel to help her recover in 2010, taking six years to create 700 pages. The work draws on Ferris's childhood growing up in Chicago, and her love of monsters and horror media. The process of creating the book was difficult, with Ferris working long hours, living frugally, and encountering publishing setbacks, such as a cancelation by one publisher and the temporary seizure of the first volume's printing at the Panama Canal.
Comic Arts Brooklyn (CAB) was a comic book festival and art book fair organized by the comic book store Desert Island, held annually in Brooklyn, New York. Founded in 2013 as a successor to the Brooklyn Comics and Graphics Festival (BCGF), CAB focused on self-published, independent, and alternative comics.
