In U.S. politics,an independent Democrat is an individual who loosely identifies with the ideals of the Democratic Party but chooses not to be a formal member of the party or is denied the Democratic nomination in a caucus or primary election. Independent Democrat is not a political party. Several elected officials,including members of Congress,have identified as independent Democrats.
The lieutenant governor of Alabama is the president of the Alabama Senate,elected to serve a four-year term. The office was created in 1868,abolished in 1875,and recreated in 1901. According to the current constitution,should the governor be out of the state for more than 20 days,the lieutenant governor becomes acting governor,and if the governor dies,resigns or is removed from office,the lieutenant governor ascends to the governorship. This was the first Alabama gubernatorial race where either Choctaw and/or Conecuh counties voted Republican. This alongside the concurrent Senate race is the last time Jefferson County voted Republican in any statewide election. Bentley did not complete this term;he resigned in April 2017 due to a scandal and was succeeded by fellow Republican Kay Ivey.

Bentley appointed Luther Strange,the attorney general of Alabama,to fill the vacancy until a special election could take place. The special election was scheduled for December 12,2017.
The 2024 United States Senate elections are scheduled to be held on November 5,2024,as part of the 2024 United States elections. 33 of the 100 seats in the U.S. Senate will be contested in regular elections. Senators are divided into three classes whose six-year terms are staggered so that a different class is elected every two years. Class 1 senators will face election in 2024.
The 2026 United States Senate elections are scheduled to be held on November 3,2026,with 33 of the 100 seats in the Senate being contested in regular elections,the winners of which will serve 6-year terms in the United States Congress from January 3,2027,to January 3,2033. Senators are divided into 3 groups,or classes,whose terms are staggered so that a different class is elected every 2 years. Class 2 senators were last elected in 2020,and will be up for election in 2032.
The 2022 Alabama Senate elections took place on November 8,2022,as part of the 2022 United States elections. Alabama voters elected state senators in all 35 of the state's Senate districts. State senators serve four-year terms in the Alabama Senate in Montgomery.
