Jay Hovey is an American politician from Marvyn,Alabama.
Hovey is a graduate of Auburn University,and during his time in school he was a student firefighter. [1]
Hovey started his political career serving as a city council member for Auburn,Alabama's 7th ward for 4 years. [2]
In 2022 Hovey decided to run against three time incumbent Tom Whatley in the Republican primary for Alabama's 27th Senate District. [2] This race would end up being so close the Alabama GOP called it a tie. [3] Eventually it was decided that Hovey had won by a single vote,but Senator Whatley withdrew from the race before a full recount occurred. [4] After the primaries Hovey would go onto to win the general election by a margin of over 40%.

The New York State Senate is the upper house of the New York State Legislature,while the New York State Assembly is its lower house. Established in 1777 by the Constitution of New York,its members are elected to two-year terms with no term limits. There are 63 seats in the Senate. The Democratic Party has held control of the New York State Senate since 2019. The Senate Majority Leader is Andrea Stewart-Cousins.
The Alabama Republican Party is the state affiliate of the Republican Party in Alabama. It is the dominant political party in Alabama. The state party is governed by the Alabama Republican Executive Committee. The committee usually meets twice a year. As of the February 23,2019 meeting in Birmingham,the committee is composed of 463 members. Most of the committee's members are elected in district elections across Alabama. The district members are elected in the Republican Primary once every four years,with the most recent election for the committee having been on June 5,2018. The new committee takes office following the general election in November 2018. In addition,all 67 county GOP chairmen have automatic seats as voting members. The state chairman can appoint 10 members. Each county committee can appoint bonus members based on a formula that theoretically could add 312 seats,although that formula currently calls for only about 50 seats.

Incumbent senator Richard Shelby was first elected in 1986 and re-elected in 1992 as a Democrat before becoming a Republican in 1994. In February 2021,Shelby announced that he would not seek re-election to a seventh term,which resulted in the first open Senate seat since 1996 and the first in this seat since 1968.

A vacancy arose from Senator Jeff Sessions's February 8,2017,resignation from the Senate. Sessions resigned his post to serve as the 84th U.S. attorney general. On February 9,2017,Governor Robert J. Bentley appointed Luther Strange,the attorney general of Alabama,to fill the vacancy until a special election could take place. The special election was scheduled for December 12,2017.

Although Tester outperformed Kamala Harris in the concurrent presidential election by 12.8 points,which was the strongest overperformance of any Democratic Senate candidate,it was still not enough to win,as Donald Trump carried Montana by nearly 20 points.

The 2024 Washington gubernatorial election was held on November 5,2024. The top-two primary was held on August 6. Incumbent Democratic Governor Jay Inslee was eligible to seek re-election to a fourth term but decided that he would not do so. The Democratic nominee,state Attorney General Bob Ferguson,defeated the Republican nominee,former Congressman Dave Reichert,to succeed Inslee. Inslee,who previously served in the U.S. House,was first elected governor in 2012 and won re-election in 2016 and 2020. Washington has not had a Republican governor since John Spellman left office in 1985,the longest streak of Democratic leadership of any state in the country and the third-longest streak of one-party leadership after South Dakota and Utah. Ferguson defeated Reichert with 55.51% of the vote in the general election. He also became the first Democrat to win Clallam County since 2000.
