Biniam Mehary (born 20 December 2006) is an Ethiopian middle and long-distance runner. In February 2024, he set a new under-20 world record in the 1500 metres indoors. [1]

Career

Biniam competed in Toruń at the Copernicus Cup in February 2024 as a 17 year-old, he set a new under-20 world record in the 1500 metres of 3:34.83 beating the record set had been set by Jakob Ingebrigtsen in 2019. [2] [3] He then ran 7:33.04 to finish second in the 3000m at the 2024 Meeting Hauts-de-France Pas-de-Calais in Lievin. [4] [5]

He was selected to run for Ethiopia at the 2024 World Athletics Indoor Championships in Glasgow in the 1500m. [6] He qualified for the final before finishing in ninth place overall. [7]

He finished second at the 2024 Diamond League Shanghai over 5000 metres in a personal best time of 12:56.37. [8] [9] He set a new outdoors personal best over 5000m running 12:54.10 at the Los Angeles Grand Prix on 17 May 2024. [10]

On 14 June 2024, Biniam competed in the Ethiopian Olympic 10,000m trials in Nerja, Spain. In one of the highest quality 10,000m races ever, four men finished inside 26:40 and six men finished inside 26:50 for the first time. Even though then 17-year-old Biniam Mehary did not qualify to compete in the Paris Olympic Games, he placed fourth in a world U20 record of 26:37.93, taking four seconds off the previous mark set 19 years ago by the late Samuel Wanjiru. [11] He was later included in the Ethiopian team for the 2024 Paris Olympics replacing Yomif Kejelcha, where he placed sixth in the 5000m final. [12] [13]

Gudaf Tsegay Desta is an Ethiopian middle- and long-distance runner. She is the current women’s world record holder for 5,000 m (14:00.21), set at the 2023 final Diamond League event, the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon. Eugene is also where she won the World Athletics Championships on 5,000 m in 2022. At the World Athletics Championships, Gudaf also won the gold medal for 10,000 metres in 2023; a bronze for the 1,500 metres in 2019, and silver in 2022. She is the 2020 Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist in the women's 5,000 metres. She is a two-time World Indoor Championship 1,500 m medallist, claiming bronze in 2016 and gold in 2022. She is also the world indoor record holder for the 1,500 m, setting previously in this event world under-18 (current) and U20 (former) records.

Ingebrigtsen is a two-time Olympic champion, winning gold medals in the 1500 m at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, setting a then Olympic and European record, and in the 5000 metres at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Selemon Barega Shirtaga is an Ethiopian long-distance runner. He won the gold medal in the 10,000 metres at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, silver for the 5,000 metres at the 2019 World Championships in Doha and bronze in the 10,000 metres at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest. Selemon is a two-time 3,000 metres World Indoor Championship medallist, taking silver in 2018, and a gold in 2022.

The men's 10,000 metres event at the 2020 Summer Olympics took place on 30 July 2021 at the Japan National Stadium. 25 athletes competed. None of the 2016 medalists took part in the competition. Selemon Barega from Ethiopia won the event by 0.41 seconds, with Ugandans Joshua Cheptegei, the world record holder, and Jacob Kiplimo coming second and third, respectively. All of them won their first Olympic medal.

Telahun Haile Bekele is an Ethiopian male long-distance runner who specialises in the 5000 metres. His career has included victories at the Golden Gala Pietro Mennea, and at the Bislett Games. He was fourth in the 5000m at the 2019 World Championships.

Lamecha Girma is an Ethiopian athlete who specialises in the 3,000 metres steeplechase. He is the 2020 Tokyo Olympic silver medallist in the event and won silver medals at the 2019, 2022 and 2023 World Athletics Championships. Lamecha also won a silver in the 3,000 metres at the 2022 World Indoor Championships. He is the world indoor record holder for the 3,000 metres, which was set in February 2023. Lemlem Hailu is an Ethiopian middle- and long-distance runner. She won the gold medal in the 3000 metres at the 2022 World Indoor Championships. Hailu earned bronze in the 1500 metres at the 2019 African Games.

The 2024 Shanghai Diamond League was an outdoor track and field meeting on 27 April 2024. Last held at Shanghai Stadium in 2019, this meeting relocated 67 kilometres (42 mi) west to Suzhou Olympic Sports Centre. This was the first meeting in China after the COVID-19 pandemic in China. The meeting was officially advertised as the 2024 Yangtze Delta Athletics Diamond Gala. It was the second leg of the 2024 Diamond League, just one week after the 2024 Xiamen Diamond League.

The men's 10,000 metres at the 2024 Summer Olympics was held at the Stade de France in Paris, France, on 2 August 2024. This was the 26th time in which the men's 10,000 metres has been contested at the Summer Olympics. A total of 27 athletes were able to qualify for the event by entry standard or ranking. Unlike other Olympic events, this event did not have heats or semifinals, with all qualified athletes instead competing in a single final.
