The 20th World Athletics Indoor Championships is due to be held from 21 to 23 March 2025 in Nanjing, People's Republic of China, at the newly built Nanjing's Cube gymnasium in the Nanjing Youth Olympic Sports Park. [1] [2]

Contents

Nanjing was originally due to host World Athletics Indoor Championships in 2020, then in 2021, and then again in 2023, but all these dates were cancelled due to COVID-19 pandemic regulations in China. [3] [4] The 2022 edition took place in Belgrade, Serbia, and the 2024 edition in Glasgow, United Kingdom.

Bidding process

On 26 November 2017, delegations from the three candidate cities made their presentations at the 212th IAAF Council Meeting: Nanjing, Serbia's capital Belgrade, and Toruń, Poland. Nanjing won the bid for the 2020 World Athletics Indoor Championships. [5]

Venue

The facility, a brand new purpose-built gymnasium at the Nanjing Youth Olympic Sports Park known as Nanjing's Cube will be the centrepiece of the event. Construction started in September 2017 and is due to be completed in time for the event. The venue for track and field and swimming are located in Block A of the park and to the east is the Yangtze River complex. It will provide catering and hotels as well as security work for the event. Qualification

The qualification period for all events runs from 1 September 2024 to 9 March 2025 (midnight Monaco time). Athletes could qualify by achieving the Entry Standard within the qualification period or by World Indoor Tour Wildcard or by virtue of their position in the World Rankings as of 9 March 2025 to complete, where necessary, the target number of athletes in each event. In total no more than two male and two female athletes from any one Member will be invited. The winners of the World Indoor tour will receive wildcards to the championships, allowing nations with wildcards to enter up to 3 athletes into individual events. [8]

The 2017 European Athletics Indoor Championships were held between 3 and 5 March 2017 at the Kombank Arena in Belgrade, Serbia. The 2025 World Athletics Championships will be the twentieth edition of the World Athletics Championships, and are scheduled to be held from 13 to 21 September 2025 in Tokyo, Japan. The championships will use the National Stadium, rebuilt for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and 2020 Summer Paralympic Games.

The 2020 USA Indoor Track and Field Championships were held at the Albuquerque Convention Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Organized by USA Track and Field (USATF), the two-day competition took place from February 14 to February 15 and serves as the national championships in track and field for the United States.

The 2023 World Athletics Cross Country Championships took place on 18 February 2023 in Bathurst, Australia. It was the event's 44th edition and the second time after Auckland in 1988 that the championships were held in Oceania.

Jessica Schilder is a Dutch track and field athlete competing in shot put. Her outdoors personal best is 20.33 m, which is a Dutch record, and her indoors personal best is 20.31 m. She is two-time bronze medalist at the world championships and a two-time gold medalist at the European championships (outdoor).

The 2022 USA Indoor Track and Field Championships were held at The Podium in Spokane, Washington. Organized by USA Track and Field (USATF), the two-day competition took place from February 26 to February 27 and served as the national championships in track and field for the United States and selection meet for Team USA for 2022 World Athletics Indoor Championships March 18 to 20, 2022 in Belgrade, Serbia.

The 2024 World Athletics Cross Country Championships was held in Belgrade, Serbia, on 30 March 2024. It was held in the Park of Friendship, next to the Danube, which was also the site of the 2013 European Championships.
