It will serve the Metro Line and will be the northern terminus station until the line is further extended. The station will be located in the northeastern section of the developing Blatchford community, and west of the Westwood neighbourhood. [1] The station was completed in early 2024 [2] [3] [4] as part of 1.6 km (0.99 mi) Metro Line NW Phase 1 Extension. [4] [5] The station however, will not open for passenger service until a later unknown date due to a lack of demand.

History

The concept plan for the Metro Line extension was approved in 2013. Phase 1 of the extension from NAIT station to Blatchford Gate Station entered procurement in 2019. [6] Construction began in the summer of 2020. As part of Phase 1 of the Metro Line northwest extension, the station is set to be completed in Late December 2023 [2] [3] or early 2024, replacing NAIT station as the northern terminus of the line. [1] [7]

Although the station is planned to be completed in 2023-2024, it is planned for the station's opening date to be deferred due to lack of demand. [8] [9] The area around the station is currently planned to contain various residential and mixed-use developments in the future. [10] However, there is a lack of development around the station, as current development in Blatchford is currently located at the opposite end of the neighbourhood. Developments near Blatchford Gate station are planned to be completed before the end of the decade. [11]

Future Metro Line extensions are planned to continue north of the station into Northwest Edmonton. [12] [6] [1]

Station layout

Blatchford Gate station will be an at-grade station with 2 side platforms. The station will be able to accommodate five-car trains. [12] The station platforms each have canopies and heated shelters. The entire extension through Blatchford will be on a Transit Mall with shared use paths and bike lanes running adjacent to the train tracks. [6] Unlike the Capital Line, intersections around the station are not planned to use crossing arms, flashing lights or bells, similar to the Valley Line.

Power for the station will primarily be provided by solar panels installed in the stations canopy. when operational these solar panels will provide renewable energy to the heated shelters, mechanical components and lighting at each of the stations. [1] [13]

Metro Line Light rail line in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

The Metro Line is a light rail transit line on the Edmonton Light Rail Transit system. The line operates from northwest Edmonton to south Edmonton, and was scheduled to have begun operation by spring 2014 but instead opened on September 6, 2015, at a reduced speed and frequency. The line uses 3.3 kilometres (2.1 mi) of new track, three new stations, and seven stations on the existing Capital Line. In August 2021, service on the Metro Line was modified to end at Health Sciences/Jubilee station, as was originally planned but delayed due to signalling issues which caused trains to run a reduced frequency to the interim terminus at Century Park station to ensure the Capital Line could run at full frequency. The cost of the project was $665 million, jointly funded by the City of Edmonton, Province of Alberta, and the Government of Canada. It was the first new line that was not an extension of the existing line. The line was expected to add 13,200 riders per weekday. A trip from the temporary NAIT station to Churchill was expected to take nine minutes. A number of roadworks are under construction or completed to revitalize the surrounding community. An extension to the northwest city limits has completed conceptual design, and a further extension is proposed through the city of St. Albert on Highway 2/St. Albert Trail.
