Bloomfield is a ghost town in Cooke County, Texas, United States. [1]
Bloomfield is situated on Farm to Market Road 372. It was first settled in 1876 by Tennessee native Alfred Robison and his children. The post office operated from 1877 to 1907. The first postmaster's was Crockett Robison, and his sister Angeline Jackson named the town after a nearby field of wildflowers. Another settler included John S. Riley, an uncle of James Whitcomb Riley. By 1884, the town had a population of 300. Lake Ray Roberts' area included Bloomfield. [2] [3]

Indianola is a ghost town located on Matagorda Bay in Calhoun County, Texas, United States. The community, once the county seat of Calhoun County, is a part of the Victoria, Texas, Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 1875, the city had a population of 5,000, but on September 15 of that year, a powerful hurricane struck, killing between 150 and 300 and almost destroying the town. Indianola was rebuilt, only to be wiped out on August 19, 1886, by another intense hurricane followed by a fire. Indianola was designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1963, marker number 2642.
The Great Hanging at Gainesville was the execution by hanging of 41 suspected Unionists in Gainesville, Texas, in October 1862 during the American Civil War. Confederate troops shot two additional suspects trying to escape. Confederate troops captured and arrested some 150–200 men in and near Cooke County at a time when numerous North Texas citizens opposed the new law on conscription. Many suspects were tried by a "Citizens' Court" organized by a Confederate military officer. It made up its own rules for conviction and had no status under state law. Although only 11% of county households enslaved people, seven of the 12 men on the jury were enslavers.
