Bloomington High School (BHS) is a public secondary school in Bloomington, Illinois, and is part of Bloomington School District 87.

Contents

Curriculum

Courses include subjects of standard core high school curricula (Math, English, Science, Physical Education, Foreign Language, etc.) as well as courses in fine arts, vocational skills and special education.

Athletics

Athletics include a full range of individual and team sports, including football, basketball, baseball, softball, soccer, volleyball, tennis, swimming, diving, wrestling, track and field, cross country, golf, cheerleading, gaming club, and pom pons. A wide variety of school clubs also meet on various topics. [2]

The school's colors are purple and gold. The school dropped its mascot, a Native American chief head, in 2001 because it was deemed offensive. The school's students at that time voted not to replace the mascot but still called the Purple Raiders. Bloomington High School participates in the Big 12 Conference (Illinois).

Awards

Bloomington High School was named by U.S. News & World Report as a Bronze Medal Winner in 2009 and a Silver Medal Winner in 2012, reflecting its status as one of the nation's best high schools. [3]

Moses J. Yellowhorse was a Native American professional baseball pitcher from Oklahoma. He played two seasons in Major League Baseball for the Pittsburgh Pirates, 1921 and 1922. Yellowhorse was Skidi Pawnee.

The 1954 major league baseball season began on April 13, 1954. The regular season ended on September 26, with the San Francisco Giants and Cleveland Indians as the regular season champions of the National League and American League, respectively. The postseason began with Game 1 of the 51st World Series on September 29 and ended with Game 4 on October 2. The Giants swept the Indians in four games, capturing the 5th championship in franchise history.

The 1977 Major League Baseball draft took place prior to the 1977 MLB season. The draft saw the Chicago White Sox select Harold Baines first overall.

Richard T. Crane Medical Prep High School is a public four-year medical prep high school located in the Near West Side neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois, United States. The school is operated by the Chicago Public Schools district. Crane is named for businessman Richard T. Crane. Beginning with the 2012–13 school year, the school transitioned to a medical preparatory high school, partnering with Rush Hospital, City Colleges Of Chicago, and University of Illinois at Chicago.

Curtis Lowell Raydon was an American professional baseball player, a right-handed pitcher whose career extended from 1953 through 1961. In 1958, he was a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates of Major League Baseball and had a strong rookie campaign, only to be sidetracked by injury; 1958 would be his only big-league season. Raydon was listed as 6 feet 4 inches (1.93 m) tall and 190 pounds (86 kg).

Lynne Marie Allsup, also known by her married name Lynne Olson, was an American competition swimmer for Central Michigan University, and a 1964 Tokyo Olympic competitor in the Women's 4x100 meter freestyle relay preliminary heat. She was a national record-holder in the 100-yard freestyle, and was part of a world record 4x100-meter freestyle relay team on September 27, 1964 which swam a short-lived world record time of 4:07.6 in Los Angeles prior to the Tokyo Olympics.
