Portulaca grandiflora is a succulent flowering plant in the purslane family Portulacaceae, native to southern Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay and often cultivated in gardens. It has many common names, including rose moss, eleven o'clock, Mexican rose, moss rose, sun rose, table rose, rock rose, and moss-rose purslane. Despite these names and the superficial resemblance of some cultivars' flowers to roses, it is not a true rose, nor even a part of the rose family or rosid group; rather, it is much more closely related to carnations and cacti.

It also has a large collection of about 135,000 maps and 4500 atlases which have been housed at a library at the University of Amsterdam since 1880.
Hendrik (Henk) Cornelis Dirk de Wit was a Dutch systematic botanist who contributed significantly to the knowledge of the Aroid genera Cryptocoryne and Lagenandra. He grew up in the Waterland, a marshy area in the Northwest Netherlands, and had a lifelong interest in aquatic plants.
The Nederlands Tijdschrift voor Geneeskunde is the main medical journal in the Netherlands, appearing weekly. Established in 1857, it is one of the world's oldest journals. Its publication language is exclusively Dutch. The journal is published and supported by the Vereniging NTvG, which is currently composed of 209 medical scientists. The current editor-in-chief is Yolanda van der Graaf. The Journal's headquarter is situated in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. From early on, the objective was to create an overarching and all-encompassing journal for medical professionals to exchange insights, knowledge and opinion, and to guarantee consistent progress throughout the country. At present, the main sections include: News, Opinion, Research, Clinical Practice, Perspective. Nowadays, the NTvG focuses on reviews and commentaries of research articles which are often published in English. Further, it continues to produce research of medical practice mainly in the Netherlands.

The Tijdschrift voor economische en sociale geografie is a peer-reviewed academic journal published by Wiley-Blackwell on behalf of the Royal Dutch Geographical Society. The editor-in-chief is Frank van Oort. The journal focuses on contemporary issues in human geography, with articles relating to economic, social, cultural and political geographical themes. It journal was established in 1910, making it the oldest journal in human geography.

Pieter Baas is a Dutch botanist and an emeritus professor of plant systematics at the Leiden University, who served as director of the Rijksherbarium of Leiden University between 1991 and 1999. When the institute was faced with budget cuts in 1993 he managed to preserve the collection by joining it with the university collections of Wageningen and Utrecht. This led to the founding of the National Herbarium of the Netherlands in 1999. Baas subsequently became director of the institute and served until 2005. As a botanist, Baas specializes in wood anatomy, and is an elected fellow of the International Academy of Wood Science.
Cornelis Andries Backer (1874–1963) was a Dutch botanist and pteridologist. He was born on 18 September 1874 in Oudenbosch and died on 22 February 1963 at Heemstede, The Netherlands. He stayed thirty years in the Dutch East Indies and did research on plant taxonomy on the islands of Java and Madura.
Adenia hondala, commonly known as hondala is a large, tuberous, woody climber which scrambles over other plants. It is found in the Indian subcontinent, including Sri Lanka, and in southeastern Asia. The tuber and the fruit are used as herbal remedies and the plant is used as a cure for snake bites. The caterpillars of several species of butterfly feed on this plant; these include the tawny coster, the clipper, the common cruiser and the Tamil lacewing.
The Tijdschrift van de Koninklijke Vereniging voor Nederlandse Muziekgeschiedenis is a peer-reviewed academic journal covering the music history of the Low Countries. It is published by the Koninklijke Vereniging voor Nederlandse Muziekgeschiedenis and the editor-in-chief is Eric Jas. It was established in 1882 as the Tijdschrift der Vereeniging voor Noord-Nederlandsche Muziekgeschiedenis, renamed "Tijdschrift der Vereeniging voor Nederlandsche Muziekgeschiedenis" in 1909. In 1948 the name was changed again to the more general Tijdschrift voor Muziekwetenschap, but in 1960 this reverted to the previous Tijdschrift van de Vereniging voor Nederlandse Muziekgeschiedenis. The journal obtained its current title in 1995 when the society obtained the right to call itself "Royal". The journal is published in two yearly issues, although these are often combined in one special issue covering a single topic.
Karel Heyne (1877–1947) was a Dutch botanist, known for his comprehensive handbook on the useful plants of the Dutch East Indies ; this was the first such handbook and became a standard reference.
Maarten Buysman, also spelt Buijsman, was a Dutch botanist, known for growing, cultivating, and selling plants from across Europe, the Americas, and Indonesia. He also introduced a significant number of plants from the Americas and Europe to East Java.
The useful plants of the Dutch East Indies is a series of four descriptive botany books written by the Dutch botanist Karel Heyne (1877-1947). The series is the first descriptive catalogue about botanical plants and their economical use in the Dutch East Indies. It became a standard reference and was received by the public with appreciation. The series was published in Dutch (1913-1917) by Ruygrok & Co. in Batavia . The series was re-edited in 1922, 1927 and 1950.
Wilhelmus Egbertus Antonius Janssen, better known as Father Chrysanthus OFMCap, was a Dutch priest and biology teacher. He was known for his studies in arachnology. Initially he was concerned with the spiders of the Netherlands but he became a specialist on New Guinea spiders. Two spider species were named in his honor following his death.
