Bonsall Unified School District (BUSD) is a school district located in the unincorporated community of Bonsall, in northern San Diego County, California.

History

Bonsall Unified School District (BUSD) was established on February 26, 2013 to serve the communities of an 88 square mile area covering portions of Oceanside, Fallbrook, Bonsall and the Pala Indian Reservation. [3] Since its founding, the district has undergone several transformations to meet the evolving needs of the community.

Originally, BUSD operated as a K-8 elementary school district. In response to shifting demographics and the growth of local communities, the district expanded its offerings to include Bonsall High School, which opened its doors in 2014. [4] This expansion was a significant development, enabling BUSD to provide a comprehensive education for students from kindergarten through 12th grade.

On the retirement of David Jones, Joseph Clevenger was appointed unanimously by the board to serve as superintendent, starting on July 1, 2021. [2] [5] [6] [7] His work as superintendent has included traffic upgrades for schools, improving student performance following the COVID-19 Pandemic, and lobbying for the construction of new schools in the district, including a new campus for Bonsall High School and a new elementary school in northern Bonsall.

In March 2023, the California Department of Education recognized 59 schools across the entire state of more than 10,000 schools with the prestigious Purple Star award, awarded to schools that excel in serving and supporting the children of military families and veterans. All five of the schools in Bonsall Unified School District were recipients, [8] an unprecedented occasion that prompted an award ceremony at Bonsall West Elementary School featuring Lieutenant General George W. Smith Jr., Commanding General I Marine Expeditionary Force, and a number of prominent military and community leaders. [9] [10]

The May 2014 San Diego County wildfires were a swarm of 20 wildfires that erupted during May 2014, in San Diego County, California, during severe Santa Ana Wind conditions, historic drought conditions, and a heat wave. The main event during mid-May was preceded by a precursor fire that ignited on May 5. The Bernardo Fire has been declared accidental, and officials believe the Cocos Fire was intentionally set. The causes of the other fires are still under investigation by multiple agencies, and a joint task force was formed to coordinate the investigations and facilitate communications. Six injuries and one fire-related fatality were reported.

The Lilac Fire was a fire that burned in northern San Diego County, California, United States, and the second-costliest one of multiple wildfires that erupted in Southern California in December 2017. The fire was first reported on December 7, 2017, burned 4,100 acres (1,659 ha), and destroyed 157 structures, before it was fully contained on December 16. The fire cost at least $8.9 million, including $5 million in firefighting expenses and property damage, and an additional $3.9 million in cleanup and erosion control costs. The fire threatened the communities of Bonsall, Oceanside, Vista, Fallbrook, and Camp Pendleton. During the fire, an estimated 10,000 residents were forced to evacuate, while a total of over 100,000 residents were forced to or advised to evacuate. On December 7, the Lilac Fire also cut the power to 20,000 people.

Mission Vista High School is a public, comprehensive, dual-magnet high school that is part of the Vista Unified School District and is located in Oceanside, California; it currently serves 1,725 students and has been accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) through 2025.. The school was established in 2009 on the former Washington Middle School campus, but was officialized at its new dedicated campus in early 2011.

Joseph Aaron Clevenger is an American educator who has served as the superintendent of Bonsall Unified School District since July 1, 2021. Prior to his tenure as superintendent, he served as the Principal of Rancho Buena Vista High School from 2019 to 2021.
