Breed Obsession is the third studio album by Australian rock band Gyroscope, produced by Dave Eringa and released through Warner Music on 8 March 2008.

The album was recorded, mixed and produced in the United Kingdom. It was the second time Gyroscope had headed overseas to record, after working in Los Angeles on their previous album Are You Involved? , in 2005. [5]

Breed Obsession debuted at number one on the Australian ARIA Albums Chart, making it the band's most commercially successful album. [6] The album received further accolades when it was certified gold by ARIA in August 2008. [7]

Recording

The album was recorded at Elevator Studios in Liverpool with Dave Eringa (Idlewild, Manic Street Preachers), and mixed at Livingstone in London, United Kingdom. Zoran Trivic in an interview explaining why they recorded so far away from the home town of Perth:

"We didn't really decide to travel afar purposely. We loved Dave Eringa's work [producer on Breed Obsession] for his previous records with Idlewild. His sounds are broad and varied and raw but still precise. He lives in London so we had to travel to work with him. And he was a godsend to tell you the truth. A great experience." [8]

Singles

The first single from the album, "Snakeskin", was released on 27 October 2007, debuting at No. 30 on the ARIA singles chart, [9] was number-one most voted on JTV, number-one most requested song on Triple J's Super Request and was ranked No. 16 on Triple J's Hottest 100 for 2007. The "Snakeskin" video was shot in Wiltshire, near Stonehenge, south of London. The video sees the band playing in the middle of a 200-metre crop circle that was made specifically for the video, in the same farm where the Led Zeppelin crop circle was made that featured on the cover of the Remasters compilation album. [10] "Snakeskin" was featured in all Network 10 promotions for the 2008 AFL season. [11] The song also won two WAMi Awards for 'Best Single' and 'Best Video'.

On 12 February 2008 the band released the second single from the album, "1981", [12] which peaked at No. 67 on the ARIA singles chart. [13]

The song "Australia" was released as the third single in July 2008. [14] It reached No. 50 on the physical singles chart and No. 99 on the ARIA singles chart. [15] The song was heralded as a potential hit and unofficial anthem, with Mushroom Records chief Michael Parisi saying "This is a new anthem. Massive, massive, massive." [16] The song pays tribute to indigenous people, first settlers, Diggers and recent reconciliation efforts. Songwriter Daniel Sanders stating:

"I wanted to express it for my own sake. So I could rejoice in what I love about this country. Each to their own, but this is simply one Australian talking to another about how blessed we are. It's not patriotic or waving flags. It's a song to be enjoyed with a beer. Cheers, Australia. Tip of the cap." [16]

The Remote Part is the third studio album by Scottish rock band Idlewild, released on 15 July 2002 by Parlophone. As they were becoming increasingly aware of their label's interest in them and their demos, the band's musical direction was being steered by guitarist Rod Jones. While touring in support of their debut studio album Hope Is Important (1998), the band wrote and recorded its follow-up in stages. Sessions were done between May and November 1999 at a variety of studios: Air in London, Jacob's in Surrey, Rockfield in Wales, and Electrical Audio, Chicago. Initial recording with Bob Weston resulted in unremarkable material, by which point they switched to working with producer Dave Eringa. Described as an indie punk album, 100 Broken Windows has been compared to R.E.M. and Hüsker Dü.

Midnight Express is the fifth release by Gyroscope and was released 2 May 2003. It is their first release on the Festival/Mushroom label. The EP was recorded at Perth, Western Australia's Studio Couch with producer Shaun O'Callaghan at the helm. Many fans of the older style sound that Gyroscope had back then refer to this EP and the following double a-side single "Driving for the Storm / Doctor Doctor" as being the pinnacle / high point of their career so far. In 2003 Bombshellzine.com’s readers voted Gyroscope as 'Best Australian Live Band', ‘Best Australian Breakthrough Act’ and Midnight Express as 'Most Popular EP'. Following the release of Midnight Express the band undertook a national tour in support of 28 Days.

Driving for the Storm / Doctor Doctor is an EP by Australian post-grunge band Gyroscope. In October 2008, Gyroscope posted a live video of the song on their Myspace profile, which Daniel Sanders, their lead singer described "We took a lot of time and care recording this one, as we wanted to make sure it was stamped with that proper English guitar tone."

Cohesion is the fourth studio album by Australian rock band Gyroscope, released through Island Records on 9 April 2010. It peaked at No. 3 on the ARIA Albums Chart.

"Safe Forever" is the first single from Australian four-piece Gyroscope's debut album Sound Shattering Sound. It was released on 15 March 2004 along with a music video. The first B-side to the single was a fully acoustic version of "Misery", also from Sound Shattering Sound. The second B-side was a live version of "Sharp Words", from the band's 2003 EP, Midnight Express, and was recorded at the Amplifier Bar in Perth, Western Australia on 19 July 2003. The video was directed by Matt Weston, and won a Silver Australian Cinematographers Society (ACS) Award in 2004.

"Baby I'm Gettin' Better" is the second single from Australian alternative rock band Gyroscope's fourth studio album, Cohesion. It was released digitally on 17 May 2010. The single become the second top 40 hit from Cohesion on the ARIA Singles Chart, which peaked at No. 34 and spent a total of fourteen weeks in the top 50. The song is the group's third highest-charting single behind previous singles "Some of the Places I Know" and "Snakeskin". By the end of the year it was certified gold by Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA).
