Brendon Smith (born 4 July 2000) is an Australian swimmer. He won the bronze medal in the 400 metre individual medley at the 2020 Summer Olympics and has competed in the Summer Universiade and the 2021 Australian Swimming Trials. Smith and Rob Woodhouse are the only Australian men to have won an Olympic medal in an individual medley event.

Background

Smith trained with the Nunawading Swimming Club in Melbourne's Eastern Suburbs until 2022.^[3] In 2018 he was named by SwimSwam as one of the "20 Australians Under 20 You Need to be Watching" in the men's category.^[4]^[2] In 2022, Smith left his swim club in Nunawading and began training with Michael Bohl at Griffith University.^[2]

Smith is a student at La Trobe University, studying a Bachelor of Business in Accounting and Finance.^[1]

Smith is a lifesaver at the Half Moon Bay SLSC in Black Rock, Victoria. He competed at the Australian Youth Lifesaving Team at the 2018 Lifesaving World Championships. Smith was the only Victorian on the team. He broke two records and took home five medals, including a win in the men's 17-18 200m Obstacle Race.^[5]

Career

He competed at the 2018 Junior Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in the 200 metre, 400 metre, and 800 metre freestyle events and the 200 metre individual medley, winning the silver medal in the 400 metre freestyle with a time of 3:52.67.^[6]^[7] A year later in 2019, Smith competed at the 2019 Summer Universiade ^[1] in Naples, Italy in the 200 metre breaststroke, 800 metre freestyle and 400 metre individual medley and won the bronze medal in the 4×200 metre freestyle relay alongside Maxwell Carleton, Ashton Brinkworth, Jacob Hansford and Cameron Tysoe.^[8]

2021 Summer Olympics Trials

Smith competed at the 2021 Australian Swimming Trials in the 200 metre, 800 metre, and 1500 metre freestyle events as well as both the 200 metre and 400 metre individual medley events. He qualified for the Australian Olympic swim team after achieving an Australian record in the 400 metre individual medley final with a time of 4:10.04, surpassing the previous record set by Thomas Fraser-Holmes at the 2013 Australian Swimming Championships with a time of 4:10.14.^[9]^[10]

2020 Summer Olympics

At the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan, and held in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Smith broke both the Australian and Commonwealth record in the 400 metre individual medley with a time of 4.09.27 in the prelims heats.^[11] In the final, he won a bronze medal in the event with a time of 4:10.38, which was 0.10 seconds slower than silver medalist in the event Jay Litherland of the United States, less than one second slower than the gold medalist in the event Chase Kalisz of the United States, and marked Australia's first medal at the 2020 Olympic Games.^[12]^[13]

Her total career haul of 12 Olympic medals following the 2024 Olympic Games made her Australia's most decorated Olympian and included one gold medal from the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, four gold medals from the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo and one gold medal from the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. Andrew Hammond Seliskar is a retired American competitive swimmer. He won the gold medal in the 200 meter butterfly at the 2013 FINA World Junior Swimming Championships in Dubai, breaking the Championships record.

Jay Litherland is an American competition swimmer. He represents DC Trident which is part of the International Swimming League. He won the silver medal in the Men's 400 Individual Medley at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in a time of 4:10.28. He was a World University Games gold medalist at the 2015 Summer Universiade and a bronze medalist at the FINA World Junior Swimming Championships. Litherland competed for the University of Georgia in American collegiate swimming.

Travis Mahoney is an Australian medley and backstroke swimmer. Winner of two relay medals at the 2012 World Short Course Championships, he is also part of the quartet that broke the world record in the short course mixed 4 × 50 metres freestyle relay. Blake John Pieroni is a three-time Olympic gold medalist in swimming. Zachary "Zach" Douglas Apple is a retired American competitive swimmer who specialized in the sprint freestyle events. He used to swim for DC Trident in the International Swimming League. Kieran Smith is an American swimmer specializing in freestyle and individual medley events. He currently co-holds short course world records in the 4×200-meter freestyle relay and the 4×100-meter medley relay. He is the Americas record holder in the long course 400-meter freestyle and the American record holder in the 500-yard freestyle. In the 400-meter freestyle, he won the bronze medal at the 2020 Summer Olympics and the gold medal at the 2022 World Short Course Championships. Following a fourth-place finish in the 4×200-meter freestyle relay at the 2020 Summer Olympics, he won gold medals in the event at the 2021 World Short Course Championships, 2022 World Aquatics Championships, and the 2022 World Short Course Championships.

Summer Ann McIntosh is a Canadian competitive swimmer. She is the 2024 Olympic champion in the 400 metre individual medley, and also holds the world record in that event. She is a four-time World Aquatics champion, two-time Commonwealth Games gold medallist, and a two time Olympic medallist. She has a gold medal in the 400m individual medley and a silver medal in the 400m freestyle.

Matthew Sates is a South African swimmer. He is the African record holder in the short course 200 metre freestyle, 400 metre freestyle, and 200 metre individual medley as well as the South African record holder in the 400 metre individual medley. He is the 2022 World Short Course champion in the 200 metre individual medley and bronze medalist in the 400 metre individual medley. At the 2022 NCAA Division I Championships, he won the NCAA title in the 500 yard freestyle. For the 2021 FINA Swimming World Cup, he was the overall male winner, earning a total of 18 medals, including 13 gold medals.
