Bunker Hill is a neighborhood of the city of Waterbury, Connecticut. Though part of the city of Waterbury, it has its own identity with its own commercial center, schools, parks and gatherings. Like the other sections/neighborhoods of Waterbury, its distinctive character, shaped by the history and geography of the city, has led residents to form an unusual loyalty to their neighborhood.
Bunker Hill lies northwest of downtown Waterbury. It borders Watertown to the north and the Waterville and Robinwood neighborhoods to the east and south. The Bunker Hill area is accessed by the Route 8 Expressway and CT RT-63.
The area contains mostly single-family, residential homes. Many of the homes are on the National Historic District. There are 3 schools in Bunker Hill; including Bunker Hill Elementary School, Carrington Middle School, and The Catholic Academy of Waterbury.
Bunker Hill is supported by the residents who live there. The Bunker Hill Neighborhood Association exists for the purpose to promote the community and discuss matters pertaining directly to the neighborhood. The area is diverse. As many other parts/neighborhoods in Waterbury are identified by their culture; be it Italian in Town Plot and the North End or the French Canadian influence in the South End, Bunker Hill remains distinctive by its own character.
On May 24, 1962, the neighborhood was heavily damaged by a high-end F3 tornado that unroofed or flattened numerous homes throughout the area. The storm left one dead and 50 injured. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7]
Several towns in New York and Connecticut were particularly hard-hit on July 10, 1989. Several homes were leveled in Schoharie, New York and extensive damage occurred in Bantam, Connecticut. The flag pole in the center of the Waterbury green was bent over. A large section of Hamden, Connecticut, including an industrial park and hundreds of homes, was destroyed; and in some places buildings were flattened to the ground. In Waterbury, Connecticut, mayor Joseph Santopietro declared a state of emergency due to extensive damage in the city. [ref]5[/ref]

Plantsville is a neighborhood in the town of Southington, Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. It is centered at the merger between South Main Street and West Main Street. As of the 2000 Census there were 10,387 people living in the Zip Code Tabulation Area for zip code 06479, which is assigned the postal city name Plantsville. The Zip Code Tabulation Area includes the entire southwestern corner of the town of Southington, including Marion and Milldale. Beginning in 2015 Plantsville was listed as a census-designated place.
The Tornado outbreak sequence of March 9–13, 2006 was an early season and long lasting tornado outbreak sequence in the central United States that started on the morning of March 9 and continued for over four days until the evening of March 13. The outbreak produced 99 confirmed tornadoes, which killed a total of 10 people. The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) issued multiple elevated outlook throughout the sequence, including a rare high risk for March 12, which would end up being the most intense day of the outbreak, producing 62 in total. 11 F3 tornadoes were tallied, and a violent F4 tornado touched down in Monroe County, Missouri, becoming the strongest of the outbreak. Multiple tornado emergencies were issued for tornadoes throughout the outbreak as well. An intense F3 tornado that affected the towns of Renick and Maddison in Missouri killed 4 people and injured dozens others, becoming the deadliest of the sequence. Multiple of the tornadoes were long-tracked in nature, with 6 of them having paths exceeding 30 miles (48 km). One particular supercell thunderstorm during the outbreak persisted for many hours and progressed in excess of 800 miles (1,300 km) through Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, and extreme southern Michigan.

The first six days of December 1953 produced a destructive and deadly tornado outbreak sequence across the Southern United States. There were 19 confirmed tornadoes, including a violent F4 tornado that hit the northwest side of Alexandria, Louisiana and even more violent F5 tornado that hit Vicksburg, Mississippi. In all, the tornadoes killed 49 people, injured 404 others, and caused $45,709 million in damage. The death toll made this deadliest December tornado outbreak ever recorded and it would not be surpassed until 2021. This was also the last of the series of deadly and catastrophic tornado outbreaks to strike the US in 1953.
A destructive and deadly outbreak of 17 tornadoes occurred on February 9–10, 1959, mostly during the overnight hours, causing widespread destruction in the Midwest and Southeast regions of the United States. The strongest of the outbreak was a violent F4 tornado which tore through Northwestern Downtown St. Louis. An F3 tornado also caused heavy damage to numerous structures in Southern Highland County, Ohio, including a school that was in session at the time the tornado hit. Overall, the outbreak caused 21 fatalities, 358 injuries, and $53.713 million in damage. Non-tornadic impacts also caused two more fatalities, and at least 70 more injuries.
Between April 23–30, 1961, a tornado outbreak sequence struck the Midwest, Ohio, and Mississippi Valleys, and the Eastern United States. Large hailstorms accompanied the tornadoes as well and numerous other weather events also occurred. Three people were killed, 38 others were injured and losses totaled $26.810 million. Two additional fatalities also occurred due to flooding and lightning.

Over the course of 18 days, 188 tornadoes touched down across 25 states from California to Connecticut. There were 62 significant (F2+) tornadoes during the event, including 15 F3 tornadoes and four F4 tornadoes. In addition to the tornadoes, storms across the region produced destructive straight-line winds, large hail, heavy rainfall that led to flash flooding, and frequent lightning. Overall, the outbreak sequence caused three fatalities, 168 injuries, and caused $33.450 million in damage. There were additional casualties that occurred as a result of non-tornadic weather events as well.
