The Brussels buses network is complementary to the rail network in Brussels, Belgium, which consists of trams, trains, and metro trains. Brussels buses are operated by STIB/MIVB, the local public transport company. It has 50 bus routes and 11 night routes, which run on Friday and Saturday night. [1]
Some buses from Flemish transport company De Lijn and Walloon transport company TEC also serve Brussels but are not part of the same bus system.
The first motor buses were used in Brussels in 1907, with one route connecting the Brussels Stock Exchange to Ixelles' Municipal Hall. It was then stopped in 1913. Other buses were set in service from 1920 on, and in 1926, Les Autobus Bruxellois, a bus company, was founded to operate the bus network. [2] In 1955, one year after the Brussels Intercommunal Transport Company (STIB/MIVB) was founded, it took over Les Autobus Bruxellois and operated the bus network, made of 3 bus routes and 1 trolleybus route. [3] STIB/MIVB expanded the network, and in 1964, it was 185 km (115 mi) long. [4] The bus fleet was renewed in 1972 [5] and in 1991, with a new yellow livery. [6] In 2003, STIB/MIVB tested its first night bus route named N71 [7]

Transport in Belgium is facilitated with well-developed road, air, rail and water networks. The rail network has 2,950 km (1,830 mi) of electrified tracks. There are 118,414 km (73,579 mi) of roads, among which there are 1,747 km (1,086 mi) of motorways, 13,892 km (8,632 mi) of main roads and 102,775 km (63,861 mi) of other paved roads. There is also a well-developed urban rail network in Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent and Charleroi. The ports of Antwerp and Bruges-Zeebrugge are two of the biggest seaports in Europe. Brussels Airport is Belgium's biggest airport.
The Brussels Metro is a rapid transit system serving a large part of the Brussels-Capital Region of Belgium. It consists of four conventional metro lines and three premetro lines. The metro-grade lines are M1, M2, M5, and M6 with some shared sections, covering a total of 39.9 kilometres (24.8 mi), with 59 metro-only stations. The premetro network consists of three tram lines that partly travel over underground sections that were intended to be eventually converted into metro lines. Underground stations in the premetro network use the same design as metro stations. A few short underground tramway sections exist, so there is a total of 52.0 kilometres (32.3 mi) of underground metro and tram network. There are a total of 69 metro and premetro stations as of 2011.
The Brussels tramway network is a tram system serving a large part of the Brussels-Capital Region of Belgium. It is the 16th largest tram system in the world by route length, in 2017 providing 149.1 million journeys over routes 140.6 km (87.4 mi) in length. In 2018, it consisted of 18 tram lines. Additionally, Brussels-West railway station is a railway station operated by the National Railway Company of Belgium (SNCB/NMBS). It is served by the Brussels Regional Express Network (RER/GEN) service.
The Brussels Intercommunal Transport Company is the local public transport operator in Brussels, Belgium. It is usually referred to in English by the double acronym STIB/MIVB, or by its French acronym, STIB.
The premetro and tram route 3, was a tram route operated by STIB/MIVB, which connected the Esplanade stop with the Churchill stop in the southern municipality of Uccle. The line was named after the planned Metro line 3, which is set to service most of the former route of tram line 3. The colour of the signage for this line was lime-green. On 23 September 2024, the line was permanently disbanded, with most of its route being taken over by the new line 10. A further tram line 35 was established, taking over the Esplanade–Van Praet portion of line 3 and continuing on to a new terminus at Bienfaiteurs/Weldoeners.
Brussels has an extensive network of both private or public transportation means. Public transportation includes Brussels buses, trams, and metro, as well as a set of railway lines and railway stations served by public trains. Air transport is available via one of the city's two airports, and boat transport is available via the Port of Brussels. Bicycle-sharing and car-sharing public systems are also available. The city is relatively car-dependent by northern European standards and is considered to be the most congested city in the world according to the INRIX traffic survey.
The premetro and tram route 4 in Brussels, Belgium, is a tram route operated by STIB/MIVB, which connects the Stalle Parking stop in the southern municipality of Uccle to Brussels-North railway station in the municipality of Schaerbeek. It was created on 2 July 2007 as a new route between Esplanade and Stalle Parking. On 31 August 2009, the route was shortened with a new terminus at Brussels-North, while line 3 was expanded between Brussels-North and Esplanade. The colour of the signage for this line is pink.
Horta is a premetro station located under the Chaussée de Waterloo/Waterloosesteenweg in the Saint-Gilles municipality of Brussels, Belgium. The station is named after the Art Nouveau architect Victor Horta, who designed a number of significant buildings in the area. It opened on 3 December 1993.
The premetro and tram route 7 in Brussels, Belgium, is a tram route operated by STIB/MIVB, which connects the Vanderkindere stop in the southern municipality of Uccle with the Heizel/Heysel stop in Laeken in the City of Brussels, where connecting services of tram route 51, Metro line 6, as well as bus routes 84 and 88 depart. The colour of the signage for this line is bright yellow.
The Volvo 7900 is an integrally-constructed single-decker rigid bus and single-decker articulated bus, most commonly available as a hybrid electric bus named Volvo 7900 Hybrid or just Volvo 7900H, but is also available with both diesel and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) engines in some markets. It was manufactured at Volvo's plant in Poland until 2023. From now on the bodywork is manufactured on licence by MCV Bus and Coach in Egypt.The MCV assembled 7900 features a slightly updated front, similar to the Volvo 8900 Electric. The Volvo 7900 was introduced at Busworld Kortrijk 2011. Based on the Volvo 7900 Hybrid an extension is offered, which i.a. includes a roof-mounted device for occasional loading at stops. The manufacturer assumes that all buses at all end stations and also at some particularly busy stations stay a few minutes until the return or onward journey. As soon as a bus reaches an appropriately equipped stop, a loading unit attached to a pillar at the roadside lowers onto the coupling point mounted on the roof of the bus. The charging process ends as soon as the bus wants to continue or the battery is full. According to the manufacturer, this equipment allows compared to conventional hybrid buses significantly extending the travel time in electric mode and a reduction in fuel consumption. The vehicle and the charging system were first presented to the public in September 2014 at the International Motor Show.
