"Can You Hear Me?" is a song by New Zealand rock band Evermore, it is the third single from their third studio album Truth of the World: Welcome to the Show and is one of the band's personal favourites, seeing it as one of the most emotional and rewarding songs they've ever written[ citation needed ]. It's the last track on the album and tells the story of the main character, Max, who crashed his car into a river and sees his whole life run before his eyes. The song is currently[ when? ] being used for a Westpac television commercial. It is also currently being used for the Seven Network promotion of the Grey's Anatomy season five season finale.
Rock music is a broad genre of popular music that originated as "rock and roll" in the United States in the early 1950s, and developed into a range of different styles in the 1960s and later, particularly in the United Kingdom and in the United States. It has its roots in 1940s and 1950s rock and roll, a style which drew heavily on the genres of blues, rhythm and blues, and from country music. Rock music also drew strongly on a number of other genres such as electric blues and folk, and incorporated influences from jazz, classical and other musical styles. Musically, rock has centered on the electric guitar, usually as part of a rock group with electric bass, drums, and one or more singers. Usually, rock is song-based music usually with a 4/4 time signature using a verse–chorus form, but the genre has become extremely diverse. Like pop music, lyrics often stress romantic love but also address a wide variety of other themes that are frequently social or political.
Evermore are a band originally from Feilding, New Zealand, now based in Melbourne, Australia. The band consists of brothers Jon, Peter and Dann Hume. The band have released three platinum-selling albums, Dreams (2004), Real Life (2006) and Truth of the World: Welcome to the Show (2009) and a self-titled greatest hits album including three new songs. They have been nominated for seven ARIA Awards, and have won two Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards. They have won the APRA Silver Scroll songwriting award, and the Channel V Oz Artist of the Year Award.
In the music industry, a single is a type of release, typically a song recording of fewer tracks than an LP record or an album. This can be released for sale to the public in a variety of different formats. In most cases, a single is a song that is released separately from an album, although it usually also appears on an album. Typically, these are the songs from albums that are released separately for promotional uses such as digital download or commercial radio airplay and are expected to be the most popular. In other cases a recording released as a single may not appear on an album.
The band finished filming the video which was filmed in Johannesburg, South Africa and directed by Tristin Holmes. It became available to Evermore's fans at midnight on 3 June 2009. The beginning of the video features the track "Faster" from the same album and then progresses into the title song. The video has recently become available on iTunes in two versions: Single version which only consists of the title song and the extended album version which also features the track 'Faster'
Johannesburg is the largest city in South Africa and one of the 50 largest urban areas in the world. It is the provincial capital and largest city of Gauteng, which is the wealthiest province in South Africa. While Johannesburg is not one of South Africa's three capital cities, it is the seat of the Constitutional Court. The city is located in the mineral-rich Witwatersrand range of hills and is the centre of large-scale gold and diamond trade.
South Africa, officially the Republic of South Africa (RSA), is the southernmost country in Africa. It is bounded to the south by 2,798 kilometres (1,739 mi) of coastline of Southern Africa stretching along the South Atlantic and Indian Oceans; to the north by the neighbouring countries of Namibia, Botswana, and Zimbabwe; and to the east and northeast by Mozambique and Eswatini (Swaziland); and it surrounds the enclaved country of Lesotho. South Africa is the largest country in Southern Africa and the 25th-largest country in the world by land area and, with over 57 million people, is the world's 24th-most populous nation. It is the southernmost country on the mainland of the Old World or the Eastern Hemisphere. About 80 percent of South Africans are of Sub-Saharan African ancestry, divided among a variety of ethnic groups speaking different African languages, nine of which have official status. The remaining population consists of Africa's largest communities of European (White), Asian (Indian), and multiracial (Coloured) ancestry.
Pete Hume, in a message about the video said:
"It's the last track on the album, the emotional high-point & is one of our favourites. We filmed in Johannesburg South Africa which seems like a strange place to film, and it is. We'd met the director Tristin Holmes a couple of years ago and always had him in the back of our minds because he made powerful emotional work and impressive vocabulary (he used the word 'maelstrom' in general conversation!). We wanted to do something different to anything we've done before so we took a long-shot. We had no idea what we were in for. In a 4 day shoot, on which I don't think Jon ever got out of sogging wet clothes, we were pummeled with fire-hoses & climbed through rotting drain-pipes. Despite this I think it was definitely worth it".
All tracks written by Evermore.
