Canadians in Pakistan are one of the sizeable Canadian diasporic communities established in Asia. They consist largely (although not exclusively) of Pakistani Canadians who have returned to Pakistan. In 1999 there were over 1,300 Canadians living in Pakistan. [2]
According to Pakistan's Ministry of Interior, there were 17,320 Canadian citizens residing in Pakistan as of 2015. [1]
The Baloch or Baluch are an Iranian people who live mainly in the Balochistan region, located at the southeasternmost edge of the Iranian plateau, encompassing the countries of Pakistan, Iran and Afghanistan. There are also Baloch diaspora communities in neighbouring regions, including in India and the Arabian Peninsula.
Afghan refugees are nationals of Afghanistan who left their country as a result of major wars or persecution. The Soviet war of Afghanistan in the 1980s marks the first wave of internal displacement and refugee flow from Afghanistan to neighboring Iran and Pakistan that began providing shelter to Afghan refugees. When the Soviet war ended in 1989, these refugees started to return to their homeland. In 1992, a major civil war began after the mujahideen took over control of Kabul and the other major cities. Afghans again fled to neighboring countries, including Europe and India.
Pashtun diaspora refers to ethnic Pashtuns who live outside their traditional homeland of Pashtunistan, which is south of the Amu River in Afghanistan and west of the Indus River in Pakistan. Pashtunistan is home to the majority of the Pashtun community. However, there are significant Pashtun diaspora communities in the Sindh and Punjab provinces of Pakistan, in particular in the cities of Karachi and Lahore, in the Rohilkhand region of Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan States of India. Smaller populations of Pashtuns are also found in other parts of India, Arab states of the Persian Gulf, Australia, Canada, Germany, Iran, Russia, United Kingdom, United States, and other parts of the world.
Overseas Pakistanis refers to Pakistani people who live outside of Pakistan. These include citizens that have migrated to another country as well as people born abroad of Pakistani descent. According to the Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development, approximately 8.8 million Pakistanis live abroad, with the vast majority, over 4.7 million, residing in the Middle East. The second largest community, at around 1.2 million, live in the United Kingdom. According to the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs, Pakistan has the 6th largest diaspora in the world. In 2017, overseas Pakistanis sent remittances amounting to ₨2137 billion (US$13 billion) , according to data released by the State Bank of Pakistan.
Chaudhary Nisar Ali Khan is a Pakistani politician who served as the Interior Minister from 2013 to 2017. He is currently an independent member-elect of the Provincial Assembly of Punjab - elected to represent PP-10 - having won in the General Election 2018. He however was unsuccessful in winning a National Assembly seat A former leader of the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz), Khan had been a member of the National Assembly of Pakistan between 1985 and May 2018. He was the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly from 2008 to 2013.
The Pakistani nationality law governs citizenship of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. The principal legislation determining nationality, the Pakistan Citizenship Act, was passed by the Constituent Assembly of Pakistan on 13 April 1951. Pakistan is the only country in Asia with unconditional jus soli citizenship rights.
Americans in Pakistan form a sizeable expatriate community. According to Pakistan's Ministry of Interior, there were 52,486 American citizens residing in Pakistan as of 2015. Some of them are Pakistani Americans who have returned to Pakistan. Many Pakistani Americans returned during the unstable conditions post-September 11 attacks and the global financial crisis.
Afghans in Pakistan primarily constitute refugees who have fled wars in Afghanistan, but there are small numbers of Afghan asylum seekers, migrant workers, merchants, businesspeople, exchange students and diplomats. Most were born and raised in Pakistan and are under age 30, but are still considered citizens of Afghanistan. They are under the protection of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and have been given legal status in Pakistan until the end of 2017.
Emigration from the United States is the process where individuals from the United States move to live in other countries, creating an American diaspora. The process is the reverse of the immigration to the United States. The United States does not keep track of emigration, and counts of Americans abroad are thus only available based on statistics kept by the destination countries.
British people in Pakistan consist of British people and their descendants who emigrated from the United Kingdom. A sizeable number of Britons in Pakistan are British Pakistanis, descendants of Pakistani immigrants to the UK prior to their return. The city of Mirpur in Azad Kashmir has often been dubbed as 'Little Britain' due to the majority of British Pakistanis hailing from this region, and hence maintaining great settlement connections with the city.
Immigration to Pakistan refers to the settlement of foreign nationals in Pakistan. Immigration policy is overseen by the Interior Minister of Pakistan through the Directorate General Passports. Most immigrants are not eligible for citizenship or permanent residency, unless they are married to a Pakistani citizen or a Commonwealth citizen who has invested a minimum of PKR 5 million in the local economy.
Afghan diaspora refers to Afghan people who live outside of Afghanistan. These include citizens who have immigrated to other countries, or people of Afghan origin who are born outside Afghanistan. This does not include historical immigration to the Indian subcontinent. The vast majority of the diaspora has been formed by Afghan refugees of war since the start of the Soviet-Afghan War in 1979; the largest numbers reside in Iran and Pakistan, together hosting over 2 million Afghans of which most have been resident ever since the Soviet-Afghan War. Apart from these, the largest communities exist in the United States, Germany, Russia and the United Arab Emirates.
Most expatriates in the United Arab Emirates reside in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. A number of expatriates settled in the country prior to independence. The UAE is home to over 200 nationalities. Emiratis constitute roughly 20% of the total population, making UAE home to one of the world's highest percentage of immigrants. Indians and Pakistanis form the largest expatriate groups in the country, constituting 28% and 12% of the total population respectively. 461,000 Westerners live in the United Arab Emirates, making up 5.1% of its total population.
The Canadian diaspora is the group of Canadians living outside the borders of Canada. As of a 2010 report by the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada and The Canadian Expat Association, there were 2.8 million Canadian citizens abroad. For comparison, that is a larger population than six of the ten Canadian provinces. More than 9% of all Canadian citizens live outside of Canada. That compares to 1.7% of Americans, 2.6% of Chinese citizens, 3.3% of French citizens, 4.3% of Australians, 9% of British citizens, and 21.9% of New Zealanders.
Visitors to India must obtain a visa from an Indian diplomatic mission unless they come from one of the visa-exempt countries or a country whose citizens may obtain a visa on arrival, or an e-Visa online.
Indians in Pakistan typically refers to Indian nationals working, studying or generally residing in Pakistan as expatriates. It also includes Indian emigrants to Pakistan, Indian spouses married to Pakistanis, as well as Indians who have become naturalized Pakistani citizens and other people of Indian origin within Pakistan.
On 15 March 2015, two explosions took place at Roman Catholic Church and Christ Church during Sunday service in Youhanabad, Lahore, Pakistan. At least 15 people were killed and seventy were wounded in the attacks.
Mian Saqib Nisar is a Pakistani jurist who served as the 25th Chief Justice of Pakistan from 31 December 2016 till 17 January 2019. He has previously served as the Law Secretary. He also served as a visiting professor of law at the University of Punjab where he provided instructions on constitutional law.
European Pakistanis, or depending on the preference White Pakistanis, comprise residents of Pakistan who are of European origin.
As many as 116,308 Afghan nationals are living as immigrants in the country, higher than any other country," Nisar told the House. Besides Afghans, 52,486 Americans, 79,447 British citizens and 17,320 Canadians are residing in the country, the interior minister added.
