Cantiere navale di Palermo (Palermo Shipyard) is a shipyard in Palermo, Sicily. The premise falls within the Port of Palermo area. The Port Authority agreed a State concession to Fincantieri expiring 2057. [1] The shipyard has two graving docks (respectively by 400,000 dwt and 20,000 dwt) and one new building shipway. [2]
In 1893, an agreement was signed between the Italian State and the Municipality of Palermo providing for a major modernisation plan for the city's port, including the construction of a careening dock for the maintenance and repair of large vessels. The project did not go ahead because of the political crisis that paralysed the city of Palermo. In July 1896, work had barely begun and was still at a standstill. In September 1896, Ignazio Florio Jr., scion of the wealthy Florio family, and shipowner and owner of the Navigazione Generale Italiana company, which provided regular services within Sicily and to the ports of Naples and Marseille, presented his own project for the construction of a shipyard with a large careening basin. Thanks to Florio's excellent relations with the head of government, Antonio di Rudinì, the agreement for the construction of the careening dock and the shipyard was signed on 16 March 1897. The financing of the work was divided between the Florio family (66%), the Italian State, the Municipality of Palermo and the Province of Palermo, as well as a small subsidy from the Cassa di Risparmio of Palermo. Work began on 14 May 1898. The shipyard was inaugurated in 1903, but found itself without orders. The Florio family, which had been forced to go into debt with the Banca Commerciale Italiana , was obliged to sell its shares in the shipyard in 1905 to Attilio Odero (it), Florio's partner in Navigazione Generale Italiana, but also owner of Cantiere navale di Sestri Ponente and Cantiere della Foce in Genoa, and a partner in Terni steelworks. It was then amalgamated with the two shipyards belonging to Officine e Cantieri Liguri-Anconetani into Cantieri Navali Riuniti (CNR) on 31 January 1906. In 1925 CNR was renamed as Cantieri Navali del Tirreno after it gained control of the Cantiere navale di Riva Trigoso. After completing bankruptcy proceedings in August 1973, it came under the control of Italcantieri and then Fincantieri in 1984. [4]

Cantieri navali Odero is a defunct Italian shipyard. Founded in 1846 by the Westerman brothers in Genoa-Sestri Ponente, the company was taken over by Nicolò Odero in 1872. Together with the Ansaldo-San Giorgio shipyard at Muggiano and the armament works of Vickers-Terni, it was amalgamated into Odero-Terni by Attilio Odero, which, in turn, absorbed the Cantiere navale fratelli Orlando of Leghorn (Livorno) two years later. The consolidated company became the Società per la Costruzione di Navi, Macchine ed Artiglierie Odero-Terni-Orlando (OTO). The shipyard closed in 1949.
Cantiere navale del Muggiano is a defunct Italian shipbuilding company. Founded in 1883 in Muggiano, it was combined with the Cantiere navale di Ancona into the Officine e Cantieri Liguri-Anconetani in 1899 and then, together with the Cantiere navale di Palermo, amalgamated into Cantieri Navali Riuniti (CNR) on 31 January 1906. FIAT-San Giorgio, owners of the adjacent submarine shipyard, purchased the shipyard from CNR in 1913 to increase their production capacity. Gio. Ansaldo & C. bought out FIAT in 1918 and the company was renamed Ansaldo-San Giorgio. Ansaldo was forced to sell its half to Attilio Odero in 1921. Once Odero gained control of the Vickers-Terni armament works in 1927, he amalgamated the shipyard with his other facilities into Odero-Terni. He acquired the Cantiere navale fratelli Orlando in 1929 and renamed the company, Società per la Costruzione di Navi, Macchine ed Artiglierie Odero-Terni-Orlando (OTO). It was merged into Fincantieri in 1984.
Cantiere della Foce was an Italian shipyard founded around 1800 in the village of Foce at the mouth of the Bisagno River. It built its first warship in 1804, but shipbuilding was very intermittent until the Kingdom of Sardinia acquired Liguria in 1815.
Cantiere navale di Riva Trigoso is an Italian shipyard. Founded on 1 August 1897 by Erasmo Piaggio's Società Esercizio Bacini in Riva Trigoso, it mostly built commercial ships. In 1925 the Piaggio heirs decided to spin off the drydock business and the company was renamed Cantieri del Tirreno. It diversified into building warships and was heavily damaged during World War II.
