Cap au Gris is an unincorporated community in Lincoln County, in the U.S. state of Missouri. [1]

History

Cap au Gris was platted in 1845. [2] The community took its name from historic Fort Cap au Gris, which once stood near the town site. [3] A post office called Cap au Gris was established in 1845, and remained in operation until 1883. [4]

Fort Cap au Gris, also called Capo Gray, was a temporary fort built in September 1814 near Troy, Missouri during the War of 1812 by Missouri Rangers under the direction of Nathan Boone, son of Daniel Boone. After the defeat of Fort Johnson, U.S. Army soldiers under the command of Zachary Taylor retreated to Cap au Gris in October 1814.

The Battle of the Sink Hole was fought on May 24, 1815, after the official end of the War of 1812, between Missouri Rangers and Sauk Indians led by Black Hawk. According to Robert McDouall, the British commander in the area, the Sauk had not received official word from the British that the Treaty of Ghent had ended the war with the U.S.
