Presidential elections were held for the first time in Cape Verde on 17 February 1991, as previously the National Assembly had elected the President. The result was a victory for António Mascarenhas Monteiro of the Movement for Democracy, which had also won the parliamentary elections the previous month. He defeated incumbent Aristides Pereira of the African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde. [1] Voter turnout was 61.4%. [2]

Monteiro took office on 22 March.

Cape Verde at the 2008 Summer Olympics

Cape Verde competed at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China. Their participation marked their fourth Olympic appearance. Two Cape Verdeans competed in the Olympic games: Nelson Cruz participated as a marathon runner, and Wania Monteiro participated in gymnastics. Another athlete, Lenira Santos, was selected to compete in athletics but was forced to pull out due to injury. Monteiro was selected as the flag bearer for both the opening and closing ceremonies. Neither of the Cape Verdeans progressed beyond the first round.

Presidential elections were held in Cape Verde on 7 August 2011, with a second round run-off on 21 August. The result was a victory for Jorge Carlos Fonseca of the Movement for Democracy, who received 54% of the vote in the second round.

2001 Cape Verdean presidential election

Presidential elections were held in Cape Verde on 11 February 2001, with a second round on 25 February after no candidate achieved outright victory in the first round. The result was a victory for Pedro Pires of the African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde, who defeated Carlos Veiga of the Movement for Democracy by just twelve votes. Pires, a former Prime Minister, took office on 22 March 2001, replacing António Mascarenhas Monteiro, who stood down after completing two terms in office.

1996 Cape Verdean presidential election

Presidential elections were held in Cape Verde on 18 February 1996. Only one candidate, incumbent António Mascarenhas Monteiro of the Movement for Democracy, contested the election. He was re-elected with around 92.1% of the vote. Voter turnout was 43.5%.

2016 Cape Verdean presidential election

Presidential elections were held in Cape Verde on 2 October 2016. Incumbent President Jorge Carlos Fonseca of the Movement for Democracy (MpD) was re-elected with 74.08% of the vote.

Festival de Baía das Gatas

The Festival de Baía das Gatas or the Baía das Gatas Festival and the Baía das Gatas Music Festival takes place on a full moon weekend in August in Baía das Gatas, a village and a bay in the northeastern part of the island of São Vicente, Cape Verde. It is the most popular music festival in Cape Verde and are likely being the first, in its early years, it was the only music festival in the country until the Festival de Gamboa which was established in 1992 in Praia in the island of Santiago. It is nicknamed the Woodstock of Africa.
