The Capri Hollywood International Film Festival is an annual international film festival held every late December or early January in Capri, Italy. Established in 1995, the competition section is open to international films, animation, documentaries and fiction.

Contents

The Hollywood Reporter referred to it as "the last major film festival of the year" and "a key stopping point on the road to the Academy Awards." [1] The festival is dedicated to "establishing a bridge between the film communities of Italy and Hollywood." [2]

History

The festival was launched in 1995 by Italian journalist Pascal Vicedomini, in association with Capri In The World Institute, a non-profit [3] organisation founded by Vicedomini. [4] Since then, the festival holds an annual award ceremony honouring the best in International and domestic competition. The festival is organised under the patronage of Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean. [5] It is also supported by the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage, Activities and Tourism. [6]

The festival takes place in Capri, Italy. [4] During the COVID-19 pandemic, venue for the festival was expanded beyond Capri [7] and the 25th edition of the festival was organised virtually. [8] Notable board members include Bille August, [9] Paul Haggis, Tony Renis, [10] Dante Ferretti, Gianni Quaranta, among others. [11] Previous notable honourees were Dante Ferretti, Jim Sheridan, [12] Helen Mirren, [13] Sophia Loren, [2] Frank Langella, [14] Francesco De Gregori, [15] Brenda Blethyn, [15] Bradley Cooper, [16] Greta Gerwig. [16]

Each year, more than 200 films from different countries and genres are screened at the festival. [17]

Films that had their Italian premiere at the festival include 12 Years a Slave, [18] Little Women, [2] Beasts of the Southern Wild , [19] Room, [20] Precious, [21] May December , [22] among others.

Variety noted that the festival "occupies a unique spot on the global festival circuit, serving as both a final summing up of the past year in indie cinema and as a look-ahead to [the following year]." [23]

Competition section

Feature, medium and short films compete in the festival, where the works are selected by a board, which also selects the winners. [24] Entries are divided into two sections: International and Italian. Feature, medium and short films that compete in the international section, cannot participate in any other local festivals. [24]
