Carico is an unincorporated community in Stone County, in the U.S. state of Missouri. [1] Carico is located at the junction of Railey Creek and Carico Hollow, approximately 3.5 miles east-southeast of Galena and 6.5 miles northwest of Reeds Spring along the Missouri Pacific Railroad. [2] [3]

History

Circa 1912, a store was built along the railroad tracks in the valley and named Little Chicago. The community produced tomatoes and a canning factory was built adjacent to the railroad. [4] A post office called Carico was established in 1921, and remained in operation until 1928. [5] The community once had a schoolhouse and a grist mill. [4] [6] The origin of the name Carico is obscure. [6]

Bengal was an unincorporated community in Christian County, in the U.S. state of Missouri. It was located along Tory Creek about one mile upstream (south) of Montague along the road to Ponce de Leon which is approximately three miles to the southwest. Spokane was about 2.5 miles to the south-southeast. The location is within South Galloway Township. The elevation of Bengal is 1,243 feet.

Melva is an extinct town in southern Taney County, in the Ozarks of southwest Missouri. The GNIS classifies it as a populated place. The site was located south of Hollister on the east bank of Turkey Creek along the Missouri Pacific Railroad. On March 11, 1920, the town was destroyed by a deadly tornado that killed 11 people, including 9 children. Some of the remains of Melva, mostly foundations of homes, remain on the site today.

Swan is an unincorporated community in north central Taney County, in the U.S. state of Missouri. Swan is located on Missouri Route AA, along Blue Creek and approximately 3.5 miles northwest of Taneyville.
