Carlos Octavio Ominami Pascual (born 18 June 1950) is a Chilean economist and politician,former parliamentarian and former Chilean Minister of State.
Ominami is the son of Edith Pascual Pascual (1928–2022),of partially French ancestry. and Carlos Ominami Daza (1932–1996),the latter of whom was the son of Carlos Ominami Maza (おみなみまさお,Ominami Masao),a Japanese navy officer and hairdresser who immigrated to Iquique in 1914. Due to his Japanese heritage,he remains in contact with his Japanese ancestry,often visiting the Asian country. [1] He personally met Akihito,then-Emperor of Japan,in 2011. [1]
He was married to the journalist and sociologist Manuela Gumucio Rivas,daughter of the former parliamentarian Rafael Agustín Gumucio and ex-wife of the general secretary of the Revolutionary Left Movement (MIR),Miguel Enríquez (1944–1974). He is now in relationship with MaïtéAlbagly Giroux. His only (adoptive) child is Marco Enríquez-Ominami,the offspring of his ex wife from a previous relationship,whom he adopted as his own son from an early age. [2]
He studied in Santiago at the Instituto Nacional and at the Faculty of Economics and Business in the University of Chile. During his student days he joined the Frente de Estudiantes Revolucionarios (FER),remaining a member until 1973.
He was active in the MIR from 1968. In 1973,following the deposition of President Salvador Allende,he went into exile. [3] He sought asylum in the Belgian embassy in Chile,then travelled to Brussels and then to Paris,where he took a doctorate in economics at the University of Paris in Nanterre. [3] He worked as a researcher,between 1975 and 1978 in the Centre d'Etudes Prospectives d'Economie Mathématiques Apliquée àla Planification (CEPREMAP);from 1978 to 1984 in the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) and in the Institut Français de Recherche pour le Développement en Cooperation.
From 1978 to 1983 he was active in Convergencia Socialista. Then he joined the Chilean Socialist Party (PSC),participating actively in its reconstruction. [4] He returned to Chile in 1984,working as adviser to the Latin American International Relations programme (RIAL),a branch of the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (CEPAL) and between 1987 and 1989 he helped to set up the Latin American Centre for Economy and International Politics (CLEPI).
After 1985,he began to emerge as one of the best-regarded left-wing economists,and in 1989 became assistant coordinator of the economic programme of the Concertación.
From March 1990 to September 1992 he served as Minister for the Economy under President Patricio Aylwin. [4] In 1993 he supported the nomination for President by the Concertación of Ricardo Lagos,who was defeated by the Christian Democrat (DC) candidate Eduardo Frei. [4]
The same year he was elected as Senator for Constituency No. 5,in the Valparaíso region,coming top of the poll with 33.31% of the votes. [5] [6] At the end of 2001 he was re-elected,ahead of his DC rival Ignacio Walker. [7] [8] As Senator he focussed on economic affairs and was chair of the standing committee on Business,and a member of the Public Works,Health,and other committees.
In June 2009 he announced that he was leaving the PSC in order to support his son's presidential ambitions. [9] [10] [11] Standing as an Independent candidate,he was defeated in the parliamentary elections in December of that year. [12] [13]
In June 2011 he was awarded the Japanese honour "The Order of the Rising Sun" by the Emperor Akihito in the Imperial Palace in Tokyo. [14] This was in recognition of his contribution towards improving relations between the two states.
Elections in Chile are held nationwide,including the presidency,parliament,regional offices,and municipal positions. Chilean citizens and foreign residents with legal residency of at least five years,who are 18 years or older on election day,are eligible to vote. Previously,voting was voluntary,but since 2023,it has become compulsory.
The Green Ecologist Party was a Chilean political party and one of South America's members of the global green movement.
General elections were held in Chile on 11 December 1993 to elect the President,members of the Chamber of Deputies and elected members of the Senate. Eduardo Frei Ruiz-Tagle of the Concertación alliance was elected president,and the alliance also won a majority of seats in the Chamber of Deputies and maintained its majority in the Senate. As of 2024,this is the most recent presidential election that did not result in a runoff.
General elections were held in Chile on Sunday 13 December 2009 to elect the president,all 120 members of the Chamber of Deputies and 18 of the 38 members of the Senate were up for election. As no presidential candidate received a majority of the vote,a second round was held between the top two candidates—Sebastián Piñera and Eduardo Frei Ruiz-Tagle—on Sunday 17 January 2010. Piñera won the runoff with 52% of the vote and succeeded Michelle Bachelet on 11 March 2010.

When ranked by score,Chile ranked number 29 among the 180 countries in the Index,where the country ranked number 1 is perceived to have the most honest public sector. For comparison with regional scores,the highest score among the countries of the Americas was 76,the average score was 43 and the lowest score was 13.
Marco Antonio Enríquez-Ominami Gumucio is a Chilean-French,filmmaker,politician,and perennial candidate. From 2006 to 2010 he was a Socialist Party deputy in Chile's lower chamber. In 2009 he quit the party and ran for President of the Republic as independent,where he finished third with 20% of the vote. He is currently the leader of the Progressive Party,which he founded in 2010.
Jorge Félix Arrate Mac Niven is a Chilean lawyer,economist,writer and politician. He has been Minister of State in the governments of Chilean presidents Salvador Allende (1970–1973),Patricio Aylwin (1990–1994),and Eduardo Frei Ruiz-Tagle (1994–2000). A long-time member of the Socialist Party of Chile arrate was during much of the 1990s the leader of the eponymous Arratismo faction in the party. During the indictment and arrest of Augusto Pinochet (1998–2000) Arrate was positive to the prospect of Pinochet being judged abroad. Given that his was contrary to the government stance he was removed from his post as minister in June 1999. In 2009,he was appointed as candidate for president of Chile in representation of the political alliance Juntos Podemos Más and other leftist political movements,obtaining 6.21 percent of the total votes in the elections of that year.
The Coalition for Change was a presidential and parliamentary electoral coalition that groups the supporters of Sebastián Piñera for the 2009-10 Chilean presidential election. Its predecessor was the Alliance for Chile. The constituent parties are the Independent Democratic Union,National Renewal,ChileFirst,the movements Grand North,and Christian Humanism.

Franco Aldo Parisi Fernández is a Chilean business engineer and economist. He received recognition for doing radio and television programs about economy along with his brother Antonino Parisi,and has been nicknamed "the economist of the people". In 2012 he launched his independent candidacy for president for the 2013 elections in Chile. Parisi ideologically identifies himself as a social liberal. In November 2021 he reached the third place of votes in the first round of the presidential elections,behind JoséAntonio Kast and Gabriel Boric.
The MAS Region,known until 2014 as Broad Social Movement was a Chilean left-wing political party founded by Alejandro Navarro in 2008.

The Progressive Homeland was a Chilean political party founded in October 2022. It is considered the successor of the Progressive Party (PRO),a formation led by former congressman and former presidential candidate Marco Enríquez-Ominami. Its registration was accepted by the Electoral Service of Chile (Servel) in August 2023.
