Casey Manierka-Quaile, also known as Casey MQ, is a Canadian singer, musician, film composer, songwriter, and record producer. [1] In 2022, he won the Canadian Screen Award for Best Original Song at the 10th Canadian Screen Awards for "And Then We Don't", a song he co-wrote with Tika Simone for Thyrone Tommy's film Learn to Swim . [2]

Career

MQ began making music sometime during the 2010s. Formerly associated with the band Unbuttoned, [3] MQ released his solo debut album, titled babycasey, in 2020. [4] In the same year, he was one of the creators of Club Quarantine, a popular Zoom-based online club night for LGBTQ audiences during the COVID-19 pandemic. [5]

In 2021, MQ followed up with the remix album babycasey: ultra. [6]

He has also been a member of the reunited lineup of 1980s New Wave band Spoons, [7] and was one of the producers on Cadence Weapon's Polaris Music Prize-winning album Parallel World . [8]

Roland "Rollie" Pemberton, better known by his stage name Cadence Weapon, is a Canadian-American rapper based in Toronto, Ontario. Born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta, Pemberton released his first album, Breaking Kayfabe, in 2005 with positive reviews. He subsequently signed with the American record label ANTI-, releasing the albums Afterparty Babies in 2008 and Hope in Dirt City in 2012. In 2009, Cadence Weapon was named Edmonton's Poet Laureate. His first book Magnetic Days was published by Metatron in 2014. Cadence Weapon released a self-titled album in 2018.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Polaris Music Prize</span> Award

The Polaris Music Prize is a music award annually given to the best full-length Canadian album based on artistic merit, regardless of genre, sales, or record label. The award was established in 2006 with a $20,000 cash prize; the prize was increased to $30,000 for the 2011 award. In May 2015, the Polaris Music Prize was increased to $50,000, an additional $20,000, sponsored by Slaight Music. Additionally, second place prizes for the nine other acts on the Short List increased from $2,000 to $3,000. Polaris officials also announced The Slaight Family Polaris Heritage Prize, an award that "will annually honour five albums from the five decades before Polaris launched in 2006." Details about the selection process for this prize are still to be revealed.

Afterparty Babies is the second album by Canadian rapper Cadence Weapon, released on March 4, 2008, by Anti-Records and Upper Class Recordings in the United States and Canada and March 10, 2008, by Big Dada in the United Kingdom. After signing with U.S. label Anti- and the re-release of his debut album Breaking Kayfabe, he spent eleven months in his hometown of Edmonton to work on new material for his next record.
