Centennial High School is a secondary school in Ellicott City, Maryland, United States, that opened in 1977. The school is based in Howard County and is part of the Howard County Public Schools system. The school is named after its road frontage on Centennial Lane, built in 1876 as a shortcut through Denton Hammond's slave plantation Burleigh Manor between Clarksville and Ellicott City. [2] [3]
In 1984–85, the school was recognized as one of the top 100 high schools in the country through the USDE Secondary School Recognition Program. [4] In 1996, Centennial High School was the first high school within Maryland to achieve the excellence standard in all categories of the Maryland State Performance Assessment Program's (MSPAP) report card.[ citation needed ] The school maintained these standards throughout 2000 and 2001. In 2008, the school was nominated by U.S. News & World Report as a "silver medal" school, placing in the top 505 high schools nationwide. [5] In a 2012 joint study by Newsweek and The Daily Beast, Centennial was ranked the second-best public high school in Maryland and number 111 in the nation. [6] In 2014, Centennial was ranked as the best public school in Maryland and the United States. [7] In 2017 the school was awarded "gold medal" by US News & World Report which ranked it as the best school nationwide. [8]
In 2015, the Centennial men's basketball team bested Westlake for the Maryland 3A state title. [9]
The school has a maximum capacity of 1,360 students, but through the addition of nine portable classrooms currently (as of 2022) enrolls over 1,614 students. Of those in attendance, 41.7% are Asian, 38.6% are White, 8.9% are African American, 5.6% are Hispanic, 0.3% are Native American, 0.2% are Hawaiian or Pacific Islander, and 5.1% are two or more races. Therefore, its county seat is the unincorporated community of Ellicott City. Loyola Blakefield is a private Catholic, college preparatory school run by the USA East Province of the Society of Jesus in Towson, Maryland and within the Archdiocese of Baltimore. It was established in 1852 by the Jesuits as an all-boys school for students from Baltimore, Baltimore County, Harford County, Carroll County, Howard County, Anne Arundel County, and Southern Pennsylvania. It enrolls over 900 students in grades six through twelve. The school was originally called Loyola High School when it was established in 1852. The name change occurred when it added a middle school.

Reservoir High School is a public high school in Fulton, Maryland, United States. It was opened in 2002 and is a part of the Howard County Public School System. The school is named for its proximity to the Rocky Gorge Reservoir. The school's mascot "Gators" was selected by vote in 2001, with school colors of Orange and Blue. The logo and fight song were the same as those of the University of Florida. In 2010, a cease and desist order was issued by the University, forcing the school to create a new logo.

The Johns Hopkins Blue Jays are the 24 intercollegiate athletic teams that represent Johns Hopkins University, located in Baltimore, Maryland. They compete in the NCAA Division III, except for their lacrosse teams, which compete in Division I. They are primarily members of the Centennial Conference, while the men's and women's lacrosse teams compete in the Big Ten Conference. The team colors are Hopkins blue and black, and the blue jay is their mascot. Homewood Field is the home stadium.

Kenneth S. Ulman is an American attorney, businessman, and politician who has served as the chair of the Maryland Democratic Party since 2023. He previously served as the county executive of Howard County, Maryland from 2006 to 2014 and represented the 4th district of the Howard County Council from 2002 to 2006. Ulman was the Democratic nominee for lieutenant governor of Maryland in the 2014 Maryland gubernatorial election, in which he and Lieutenant Governor Anthony Brown were defeated by Republican businessman Larry Hogan and Boyd Rutherford. Following his defeat, Ulman founded his own consulting company, Margrave Strategies.
