The Kuomintang (KMT),also referred to as the Guomindang (GMD),the Nationalist Party of China (NPC) or the Chinese Nationalist Party (CNP),is a major political party in the Republic of China,initially based on the Chinese mainland and then in Taiwan since 1949. It was the sole ruling party in China during the Republican Era from 1928 to 1949,when most of the Chinese mainland was under its control. The party retreated from the mainland to Taiwan on 7 December 1949,following its defeat in the Chinese Civil War. Chiang Kai-shek declared martial law and retained his authoritarian rule over Taiwan under the Dang Guo system until democratic reforms were enacted in the 1980s and full democratization in the 1990s. In Taiwanese politics today,the KMT is a centre-right to right-wing party and is the largest party in the Pan-Blue Coalition. The KMT's primary rival in elections is the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and its allies in the Pan-Green Coalition. As of 2023,the KMT is the largest opposition party in the Legislative Yuan. The current chairman is Eric Chu.
The pan-Blue coalition,pan-Blue force or pan-Blue groups is a political coalition in the Republic of China (Taiwan) consisting of the Kuomintang (KMT),People First Party (PFP),New Party (CNP),Non-Partisan Solidarity Union (NPSU),and Young China Party (YCP). The name comes from the party color of the Kuomintang.

Lien Chan is a Taiwanese politician. He was the Chairman of the Taiwan Provincial Government from 1990 to 1993,Premier of the Republic of China from 1993 to 1997,Vice President of the Republic of China from 1996 to 2000,and was the Chairman of the Kuomintang (KMT) from 2000 to 2005,apart from various ministerial posts he had also held. Lien ran for the President of the Republic of China on behalf of the Kuomintang twice in 2000 and 2004,but both lost to Chen Shui-bian of the Democratic Progressive Party. Upon his retirement as KMT Chairman in August 2005,he was given the title Honorary Chairman of KMT. He is highly credited after holding a groundbreaking visit to Mainland China in his capacity as the Chairman of the Kuomintang to meet with the General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party Hu Jintao on 29 April 2005,the first meeting between the two party leaders after the end of Chinese Civil War in 1949,which subsequently helped thaw the long-stalled cross-strait relations.
The Tangwai movement,or simply Tangwai,was a loosely knit political movement in Taiwan in the mid-1970s and early 1980s. Although the ruling Kuomintang (KMT) had allowed contested elections for a small number of seats in the Legislative Yuan,opposition parties were still forbidden. As a result,many opponents of the KMT,officially classified as independents,ran and were elected as members "outside the party." The movement was at times tolerated and other times suppressed,the latter being the case particularly after the Kaohsiung Incident of 1979. Members of the movement eventually formed the Democratic Progressive Party,which after opposition political parties were legalized,contested elections and won the Presidency with candidate Chen Shui-bian,ending decades of single party rule in Taiwan.

As a result of the surrender and occupation of Japan at the end of World War II,the islands of Taiwan and Penghu were placed under the governance of the Republic of China (ROC),ruled by the Kuomintang (KMT),on 25 October 1945. Following the February 28 massacre in 1947,martial law was declared in 1949 by the Governor of Taiwan,Chen Cheng,and the ROC Ministry of National Defense. Following the end of the Chinese Civil War in 1949,the ROC government retreated from the mainland as the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) proclaimed the establishment of the People's Republic of China. The KMT retreated to Taiwan and declared Taipei the temporary capital of the ROC. For many years,the ROC and PRC each continued to claim in the diplomatic arena to be the sole legitimate government of "China". In 1971,the United Nations expelled the ROC and replaced it with the PRC.
The 2005 Pan–Blue visits to mainland China were a series of groundbreaking visits by delegations of the Kuomintang (KMT) and their allied Pan-Blue Coalition to mainland China. They were hailed as the highest level of exchange between the Chinese Communist Party and the Kuomintang since Chiang Kai-shek and Mao Zedong met in Chongqing,China on August 28,1945.

Lee Huan was a Taiwanese politician. He was Premier of the Republic of China from 1989 to 1990,serving for one year under former President Lee Teng-hui. He was the father of Lee Ching-hua and Diane Lee. He was born in Hankou,Hubei.
Wu Den-yih is a Taiwanese politician. He graduated from National Taiwan University and worked as a journalist before beginning a career in politics with a 1973 appointment to the Taipei City Council. Wu was then elected Magistrate of Nantou County,serving from 1981 to 1989. Following two terms as magistrate,he was named Mayor of Kaohsiung in 1990. Wu remained mayor until 1998,having won the office in a 1994 direct election. He then served two full terms in the Legislative Yuan from 2002 to 2008. Shortly after winning a third term in the legislature,Wu was named Premier of the Republic of China in 2009. He served until 2012,when he and Ma Ying-jeou formed the Kuomintang (KMT) presidential ticket. Wu served one four-year term as Vice President of the Republic of China,stepping down in 2016. In May 2017,he was elected party chairman. Wu stepped down from the position in January 2020. Previously,Wu had served the KMT as secretary-general from 2007 to 2009,first vice chairman in 2014,and as acting chairman in 2014 and 2015.
The Kuomintang (KMT) is a Chinese political party that ruled mainland China from 1927 to 1949 prior to its relocation to Taiwan as a result of the Chinese Civil War. The name of the party translates as "China's National People's Party" and was historically referred to as the Chinese Nationalists. The Party was initially founded on 23 August 1912,by Sun Yat-sen but dissolved in November 1913. It reformed on October 10,1919,again led by Sun Yat-sen,and became the ruling party in China. After Sun's death,the party was dominated from 1927 to 1975 by Chiang Kai-shek. After the KMT lost the civil war with the Chinese Communist Party in 1949,the party retreated to Taiwan and remains a major political party of the Republic of China based in Taiwan.

It was first established on 1 January 1912,after being proclaimed in the Xinhai Revolution against the Manchu-led Qing dynasty,and lasted until 7 December 1949,after its ruling party Kuomintang (KMT) was defeated by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) at the de facto end of the Chinese Civil War,which resulted in a retreat of its central government to Taiwan,a territory which it took control of from the Empire of Japan in October 1945 after its surrender in World War II. The Communist-led People's Republic of China (PRC) was established on the mainland upon its official proclamation on 1 October 1949,while the ROC is now based on the island of Taiwan with its capital Taipei,where it retains actual rule over the Taiwan Area with the political status of Taiwan remaining in dispute to this day.
Han Kuo-yu is a Taiwanese politician. He was a member of the Legislative Yuan from 1993 to 2002,representing a portion of Taipei County for three terms. He later became general manager of Taipei Agricultural Products Marketing Corporation. In 2017,Han contested the Kuomintang chairmanship,losing to Wu Den-yih. Han was elected Mayor of Kaohsiung in November 2018,and became the first Kuomintang politician since Wu in 1998 to hold the office. He was the KMT candidate for the 2020 Taiwanese presidential election,but lost to Tsai Ing-wen. On 6 June 2020,Han was successfully recalled from his position as mayor and officially stepped down on 12 June.
