Central Memorial High School is a public senior high school located in the southwest community of North Glenmore in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The school was the first high school in Calgary. [1] The school falls under the jurisdiction of the Calgary Board of Education. The school houses unique programs that include the School of Performing and Visual Arts, and the National Sport Academy.

History

The school's name commemorates the original Central Collegiate Institute and Central High School first built in the early 20th century. [2] The school was nicknamed Sleepy Hollow High. [1]

The school now houses a program formed in 2003 named the Centre for Performing and Visual Arts. [6]

Vocational and technical education

The Career and Technology Centre (CTC) at the school offers vocational and technical training, including auto body, computer science, cosmetology, culinary arts, media design and communication, energy and environmental innovation, pre-engineering, and welding and fabrication. [7] [8]

Athletics

The school has a sports department. [9]

Rehtaeh Anne Parsons, was a 17-year-old Cole Harbour District High School student who attempted suicide by hanging at her home in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada, on April 4, 2013, leading to a coma and the decision to switch her life support machine off on April 7, 2013. Her death has been attributed to online distribution of photos of an alleged gang rape that occurred 17 months prior to her suicide, in November 2011. On a Facebook page set up in tribute to her daughter, Parsons' mother blamed the four boys who allegedly raped and released images of her, the subsequent constant "bullying and messaging and harassment", and the failure of the Canadian justice system, for her daughter's decision to die by suicide.

Nelson Mandela High School is a high school in the city of Calgary. It accommodates approximately 1800 students in grades 10–12. The school is part of the Calgary Board of Education's public school system and is located in Saddle Ridge opening on September 6th, 2016.

Martha Ruth Cohen, CM, LLD was a Canadian community activist and philanthropist. She spearheaded a variety of major civic projects, including construction of the $45 million Calgary Centre for the Performing Arts. As chairwoman of the board of directors at Mount Royal College, she oversaw the construction of a new campus and was the first woman to head a higher educational institution in Alberta. She was a member of the Order of Canada and received an honorary doctorate from the University of Calgary in 1982.

Adriana LaGrange is a Canadian politician elected in the 2019 Alberta general election to represent the electoral district of Red Deer-North in the 30th Alberta Legislature. Originally from Ontario, LaGrange moved to Red Deer, Alberta in 1981. LaGrange was elected on April 16, 2019, and was appointed as the Minister of Education on April 30, 2019. In the 2019 Alberta general election, LaGrange won her constituency with a total of 12,739 votes based on a 62.6% voter turnout in Red Deer-North. After LaGrange's re-election as an MLA in 2023, she was appointed Minister of Health.
