Ernst Haeckel German biologist, philosopher, physician, and artist

Ernst Heinrich Philipp August Haeckel was a German zoologist and an influential promoter of scientific racism that permeated throughout the western world during the mid 19th century till the end of World War II. Haeckel promoted and popularized Charles Darwin's work in Germany but he embraced a misinterpretation of Darwin called Social Darwinism that promoted the idea that "survival of the fittest" was a natural law that could be applied to human societies, and that this struggle resulted in "improvement" of some races of human beings. He advocated for the killing of 200,000 mentally and congenitally ill people by a medical control board.

Felidae Family of mammals

Felidae is a family of mammals in the order Carnivora, colloquially referred to as cats, and constitutes a clade. A member of this family is also called a felid. The term "cat" refers both to felids in general and specifically to the domestic cat.

Gecko Lizard belonging to the infraorder Gekkota

Geckos are small lizards belonging to the infraorder Gekkota, found in warm climates throughout the world. They range from 1.6 to 60 cm. Most geckos cannot blink, but they often lick their eyes to keep them clean and moist. They have a fixed lens within each iris that enlarges in darkness to let in more light.

Pterodactylus genus of pterosaurs (fossils)

Pterodactylus is an extinct genus of euctenochasmatian pterodactyloid pterosaur, whose members are commonly known as pterodactyls. It is thought to contain only a single species, Pterodactylus antiquus, which was initially described as Ornithocephalus antiquus, but the generic name Pterodactylus had been considered the correct term for the animal, and therefore P. antiquus was designated as the type species of Pterodactylus, and O. antiquus as an obsolete synonym of the former. Pterodactylus is also the first pterosaur genus to be named and identified as a flying reptile.

Acinonyx monotypic genus of mammals

Acinonyx is a genus within the cat family. The only living species of this genus, the cheetah A. jubatus, lives in open grasslands of Africa and Asia.

Tortoise Family of turtles

Tortoises are reptile species of the family Testudinidae of the order Testudines. They are particularly distinguished from other turtles by being land-dwelling, while many other turtle species are at least partly aquatic. Like other turtles, tortoises have a shell to protect from predation and other threats. The shell in tortoises is generally hard, and like other members of the suborder Cryptodira, they retract their necks and heads directly backwards into the shell to protect them.

Felis Genus of mammals (cats)

Felis is a genus of small and medium-sized cat species native to most of Africa and south of 60° latitude in Europe and Asia to Indochina. The genus includes the domestic cat. The smallest Felis species is the black-footed cat with a head and body length from 38 to 42 cm. The largest is the jungle cat with a head and body length from 62 to 76 cm.

Philodromidae Family of spiders

Philodromidae, also known as philodromid crab spiders and running crab spiders, is a family of araneomorph spiders first described by Tord Tamerlan Teodor Thorell in 1870. It contains over 600 species in thirty genera. Most are dull colored- brown, gray, yellowish or mottled with a leaf-like cardiac mark on the anterior dorsal abdomen, and seldom reach above 10 millimetres (0.39 in) long. None of the species build webs, but they do use silk for draglines and egg sacs.

Drepanidae Family containing the hook-tip moths

The Drepanidae is a family of moths with about 660 species described worldwide. They are generally divided in three subfamilies which share the same type of hearing organ. Thyatirinae, previously often placed in their own family, bear a superficial resemblance to Noctuidae. Many species in the Drepanid family have a distinctively hook-shaped apex to the forewing, leading to their common name of hook-tips.

Leopardus genus of mammals

Leopardus is a genus of spotted small cats mostly native to Middle and South America, with a very small range extending into the southern United States. The genus is considered the oldest branch of a lineage of small cats that crossed into the Americas, with the genera Lynx and Puma being later branches of the same group. The largest species in Leopardus is the ocelot ; most of the other species resemble domestic cats in size, with the kodkod being the smallest cat in the Americas. The margay is more highly adapted to arboreal life than any other cat in the Americas.

Sphaeroceridae Family of insects

Sphaeroceridae are a family of true flies in the order Diptera, often called small dung flies, lesser dung flies or lesser corpse flies due to their saprophagous habits. They belong to the typical fly suborder Brachycera as can be seen by their short antennae, and more precisely they are members of the section Schizophora. There are over 1,300 species and about 125 genera accepted as valid today, but new taxa are still being described.

Micropezidae family of acalyptrate muscoid flies

Rhinoclemmys genus of reptiles

Rhinoclemmys is a genus of turtles in the family Geoemydidae, the only genus in the subfamily Rhinoclemmydinae. Member species of the genus are commonly known as the Neotropical wood turtles and are the only geoemydids known from the Americas. As such, they have adapted to a wide range of habitats, which is reflected in the species' common names.
