The Chairperson, Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) is the senior-most IRS (IT) civil servant in the Government of India. The Chairperson of Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) is the Special Secretary to the Government of India and also cadre controlling authority of the Indian Revenue Service (Income Tax).

Contents

The CBDT Chairperson is a Special Secretary and reports to the Revenue Secretary of India. [1] He is placed equivalent to officers of the rank of Lieutenant-General, Vice-Admiral or Air Marshal, CBI Director and Deputy Comptroller and Auditor General in the Order of Precedence. [2]

As the Chairperson, CBDT is of the rank of Secretary to Government of India, his/her salary is equivalent [5] to Chief Secretaries of State Governments and to Vice Chief of Army Staff/Commanders, in the rank of Lieutenant General and equivalent ranks in Indian Armed Forces. [5]

Poonam Kishore Saxena is a retired Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer of the 1975 batch and the former Chairperson in the rank of Secretary of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT). She was the Director General of the Directorate General of Income Tax Investigation, the Director General of Administration, Recovery and Appeals and has also served as Member, CBDT before joining as the CBDT Chairman in April 2012 for a two-year tenure. She also served in senior positions in the Income Tax in Patna and Delhi. She was selected by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet.

Anita Kapur is an Indian IRS officer. She is former Chairperson of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), the apex authority of the Indian Income Tax department. She is a 1978-batch officer of the Income Tax cadre, was until now serving as Member in the CBDT.

Ajay Bhushan Pandey is a 1984 batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer belonging to the Maharashtra cadre. He is former Finance Secretary of India. He is also former chief executive officer (CEO) of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), the nodal agency of Government of India responsible for implementing Aadhaar. He also worked as the chairman of Goods and Services Tax Network from September 2017 to March 2021. Currently, he is Chairman of National Financial Reporting Authority (NFRA).

Sushil Chandra is a 1980 batch IRS (IT) officer. He was the 24th Chief Election Commissioner of India. He previously served as the Chairperson of the Central Board of Direct Taxes.

Pramod Chandra Mody is a 1982–batch retired Indian Revenue Service officer. He is currently serving as Secretary General of the Rajya Sabha. He served as Chairperson of the Central Board of Direct Taxes from February 2019 to May 2021. He had one of the longest tenures as CBDT chief.
