History

The early history of Garhwal dates back to the Katyuri kings, who ruled from Joshimath, before moving to Almora in the 11th century. Their withdrawal from Garhwal led to the rise of smaller Gadhapatis, the most powerful of which was the Panwar dynasty, which ruled from Chandpur garhi (fort). Kanak Pal is considered the founder of this dynasty. He married Chandpur Bhanu Pratap's daughter and became the Gadpati. His arrival is disputed, [3] [4] possibly Dhara city of Malwa in 688, Gujjar country in 888 or 1159 when he allegedly founded Chandpur garhi. No official record covers the era between him and the reign of 37th descendant Ajay Pal. Pal moved the capital to Devalgarh before 1506 and then to Srinagar (from 1506 to 1519).

Sited atop a hill, the fort's ruins are one kilometer from the village following a steep climb. Next to the relic is a Vishnu temple, from which the idol was stolen. The walls are made of thick stones, many with niches or cut-outs. Some circular holes on the floor could possibly have held oak poles. According to Atkinson the fort covers 1.5 acres. He reported an underground path to descend to the waterfall 500 feet below the fort. Water for daily use was brought via this route. Atkinson states that the stones used to build the walls may have been removed from the open mines of Milk-ki-Toli some distance away. It is said that two huge goats carried these stones up the hill and died on reaching the summit.
