Chandrakant Amritlal Topiwala is a Gujarati language poet and critic from Gujarat,India.
Topiwala was born on 7 August 1936 at Vadodara,to Amritlal and Lilavati. [1] [2] He completed his Bachelor of Arts in Gujarati from the University of Bombay-affiliated Saint Xavier's College in 1958,and received his Masters in 1960. He completed his PhD in 1982 from Gujarat University. [3] [4] [5]
Topiwala taught Gujarati language at K H Madhvani College,Porbandar from 1961 to 1965. In 1965,he joined Navjivan Commerce and Arts College,Dahod as head of Department of Gujarati,and served as principal of the college from 1971 to 1984. Later he became the director of Kasturbhai Lalbhai Swadhyay Mandir,run by Gujarati Sahitya Parishad,Ahmedabad. [3] [4] He was the president of Parishad during 2016 to 2018. [5]
Maheraman,his first poetry collection,was published in 1962,followed by Kant Tari Rani in 1971,which gained him critical acclaim. Pakshitirth (1988) is further experimental poetry. Black Forest (1989) was written during his visit to Europe and was influenced by European culture. Avagaman (1999) and Apani Kavyasamriddhi (2004) are his other works of poetry. [3] [4] [5]
Topiwala is considered a modernist critic. His first book,Aparichit A Aparichit B,was published in 1975 which has four sections. His collection Had Parna Hans Ane Albatross (1975) is a translation and criticism of French symbolist poetry. Madhyamala (1983) is a collection of articles on medieval Gujarati literature. Other publications include Pratibhasha nu Kavach (1984),San-sarjanatamak Kavya-vigyan (1985),Vivechanno Vibhajit Pat (1990),Granth Ghatna (1994) and Gujarati Sakshibhasya. [3] [4] [5]
He has translated works of the Bohemian-Austrian poet Rainer Maria Rilke into Gujarati: Duino Elegies as Duino Karunikao (1976) and Sonnets to Orpheus as Orpheus Prati Sonneto (1977). [3] He translated Samuel Beckett's short prose as Kalpo ke Kalpana Mari Parvari Chhe. He translated and published Contemporary Gujarati Poetry (1972) and Maithili Sahitya no Itihas (History of Maithili Literature,1987) and Ishwarni Yatna (2004). [3] [4] [5]
Topiwala co-edited Adhunik Sahitya Sangnya-Kosh (1986),a Gujarati dictionary of literary terms. He also edited Vishishta Sahitya Sangnya-Kosh (1988),Gujarati Tunki Varta Kosh (1990),Anuadhunikatavad (1993),Pavan Pagathiya (2004). He also edited Jayant Khatrini Shreshth Vartao (1994). [3] [4] [5]
He received a Ranjitram Suvarna Chandrak in 2002,Premanand Suvarna Chandrak in 2005,Anantrai Raval Criticism Award and a Sahitya Akademi Award for his critical study Gujarati Sakshibhasya in 2012. [6] He was conferred a Samanvay Bhasha Samman award in 2013 for his contributions to literature. [7] [5]
Ranjitram Vavabhai Mehta was a Gujarati language writer from British India.
Suresh Hariprasad Joshi was an Indian novelist,short-story writer,literary critic,poet,translator,editor and academic in the Gujarati language. Along with his teaching career,he led the modernist movement in Gujarati literature. He was prolific writer and he transformed the field of literary criticism.
Niranjan Narhari Bhagat was an Indian Gujarati language poet and commentator who won the 1999 Sahitya Akademi Award for Gujarati language for his critical work Gujarati Sahiyta –Purvardha Uttarardha. He was also an English poet,and had written over a hundred poems in English,most being written in the style of Gitanjali.
Manoj Khanderia was an Indian poet and a Ghazal writer of Gujarati language.
Ramesh Parekh (1940-2006) was a Gujarati poet and lyricist from Gujarat,India. He was one of the most popular poets of modern Gujarati poetry. Though government servant by profession,he had deep interest in literature and music. He contributed heavily in field of poetry including geet,ghazal and non-lyrical poetry. He also wrote stories and contributed in Gujarati children's literature.
Bholabhai Patel was an Indian Gujarati author. He taught numerous languages at Gujarat University and did comparative studies of literature in different languages. He translated extensively and wrote essays and travelogues. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2008.
Sitanshu Yashaschandra Mehta,better known as Sitanshu Yashaschandra,is a Gujarati language poet,playwright,translator and academic from India.
Pravin Darji is Gujarati essayist,poet,critic and editor from India. Spand (1976),Charvana (1976),Dayarama (1978) and Pratyagra (1978) are some of his known works. He was awarded Padma Shri in 2011.
Rajesh Vyas,better known by his pen name Miskin,is a Gujarati poet from India. Born and brought up in Ahmedabad,he completed his doctorate in Gujarati literature. He writes ghazal poetry and columns in various publications.
Anil Chavda is a Gujarati language poet,writer and columnist from Gujarat,India.
Harshad Trivedi is a Gujarati language poet,short story writer,critic and editor from Gujarat,India. He was an editor of Shabdasrishti,an organ of Gujarat Sahitya Akademi,from 1995 to 2015. Trivedi has served in different positions at several Gujarati literary institutions.
Yogesh Joshi is a Gujarati language poet,short story writer,novelist,and editor from Gujarat,India. He is an editor of Parab,a publication of Gujarati Sahitya Parishad. His significant works include Avaajnu Ajavalu,Samudi,Motiba and Adhakhuli Baari. He was awarded the Narmad Suvarna Chandrak award for his book Motiba.
Mohan Parmar is a Gujarati language short story writer,novelist and critic. Parmar won the Sahitya Akademi Award for Gujarati in 2011 for his short story collection Anchalo. He was earlier editor of Hayati,an organ of Gujarati Dalit Sahitya Akademi,along with Harish Mangalam. He served as deputy editor of Parab,a monthly journal of Gujarati Sahitya Parishad.
Chandrakant Sheth is a Gujarati poet,essayist,critic,translator and compiler from Gujarat,India. His pen names include Aryaputra,Nand Samavedi,Balchadra and Daksh Prajapati. He won the Sahitya Akademi Award for Gujarati in 1986 for his book Dhoolmani Paglio.
Radheshyam Sharma was a Gujarati language poet,novelist,short story writer,critic and compiler from the state of Gujarat,India. He is known in Gujarati literature for his experimental novels Fero (1968) and Swapnatirtha (1979). His other significant works include Aansu Ane Chandaranu (1963),and Gujarati Navalkatha,a work of literary criticism on Gujarati novels. Sharma was awarded the Gujarati literary honours Ranjitram Suvarna Chandrak,in 2004,and Dhanji Kanji Gandhi Suvarna Chandrak,in 1995.
Ramnarayan Vishwanath Pathak was a Gujarati poet and writer from India. Profoundly influenced by Gandhian thought,Pathak wrote criticism,poetry,drama,metrics and short stories. He edited and translated literary works. He was appointed the president of Gujarati Sahitya Parishad in 1946. He was awarded the Gujarati literary prizes Narmad Suvarna Chandrak for Prachin Gujarati Chhando in 1949 and Sahitya Akademi Award for Bruhat Pingal in 1956.
Jayant Himmatlal Pathak was a Gujarati poet and literary critic from Gujarat,India. He was the president of the Gujarati Sahitya Parishad from 1990 –1991. He received several awards,including the Sahitya Akademi Award,the Kumar Suvarna Chandrak,the Narmad Suvarna Chandrak,the Ranjitram Suvarna Chandrak and the Uma-Snehrashmi Prize. The Jayant Pathak Poetry Award is named after him.
Rasiklal Chhotalal Parikh (1897–1982) was a 20th-century Gujarati poet,playwright,literary critic,Indologist,historian,and editor from Gujarat,India. He was the president of Gujarat Sahitya Sabha and was appointed the president of Gujarati Sahitya Parishad in 1964. He received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1960 for his play Sharvilak. He is also a recipient of the Ranjitram Suvarna Chandrak and the Narmad Suvarna Chandrak.
Arvachin Kavita is a 1946 critical work by Gujarati writer,poet and critic Tribhuvandas Luhar,pen-name 'Sundaram'. The book offers a historical and critical survey of modern Gujarati poetry from 1845 to 1945.
Ramlal Chunilal Modi was a Gujarati writer,researcher,critic and historian. He is known for his research in medieval Gujarati literature,especially on the medieval poet Bhalan. He was awarded the Narmad Suvarna Chandrak posthumously in 1950.
