Charlottenlund Beach Park (Danish: Charlottenlund Strand Strandpark) is a seaside public park in Charlottenlund, Gentofte Municipality, in the northern suburbs of Copenhagen, Denmark. The area consists of a white sandy beach and extensive lawns, surrounding Charlottenlund Fort.

History

The park's history as a green space dates back to 1622 when King Christian IV established "Gentofte Deer Park by the Beach" (Gentofte Dyrehave ved Stranden). The area later came under "Gyldenlund", what is now called Charlottenlund Slot. [1]

In 1886 the southern part of the area was ceded to the Ministry of Defence when Charlottenlund Fort as part of Copenhagen's new defense towards the sea. The area to the north was leased to Frederick VIII who leveled it and used it as a vegetable garden.

The area came into use as a public beach park in 1932. In 1950 the park was refurbished to designs by Aksel Andersen, who served as head of the municipal park department from 1946 until his death in 1953. [2]

Facilities

The beach park has toilets, a kiosk and a restaurant on the former ramparts of the fortress.

The camp site has room for tents, caravans and mobile homes but no cabins are available. It has modern bathrooms, kitchen facilities, dining room and a launderette. [3]

Charlottenlund Palace is a former royal summer residence in Charlottenlund, some 10 km (6 mi) north of central Copenhagen, Denmark. The palace was named after Princess Charlotte Amalie, who was responsible for the construction of the original palace. It was later extended and adapted for Crown Prince Frederick VIII to a design by Ferdinand Meldahl in the early 1880s.

Forstbotanisk Have(lit. "Forestry Botanical Garden"), or Charlottenlund Arboretum was established in 1838 as an educational garden for botanists as part of the University of Copenhagen. It has previously been managed as a unit under the Hørsholm Arboretum, which in turn is operated by the University of Copenhagen's Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management. From 2008 until October 2021 it had been managed by the Skov- og Naturstyrelsen ("The Danish Nature Agency"). The land is now rented from the state and maintained by Gentofte Municipality. Cottageparken is a public park located on the border between Taarbæk to the north and Klampenborg to the south, adjacent to Jægersborg Dyrehave and Bellevue Beach, on the Øresund coast north of Copenhagen, Denmark. It is most notable for Den Røde Cottage and Den Gule Cottage, the only surviving buildings of Klampenborg Spa which opened at the site in the 1840s. They are now operated as restaurants. Jægersborg Allé is a major street in the Charlottenlund and Jægersborg neighborhoods of Gentofte Municipality in the northern suburbs of Copenhagen, Denmark. It runs from Strandvejen in the southeast to a junction just east of Kægersborg station in the northwest. The first leg of the road passes through Charlottenlund Forest, and it later follows the north boundary of Bernstorff Park. It passes a number of historic buildings, including Charlottenlund Palace, Bernstorff Palace and Schæffergården.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Helen Schou</span> Danish sculptor

Helen Schou was a Danish sculptor most known for her works of horses. Her two most-known commissions are the equestrian statue of King Christian IX commissioned for the Aarhus Cathedral and the Jutland Stallion commissioned by the City of Randers. She was honored as a Knight of the Order of the Dannebrog in 1965 and elevated to a Knight 1st Class in 1974.
