Position

On August 21, 2025, President Donald Trump signed an executive order to launch "America by Design", a national initiative to improve the design of government websites. As part of this effort, Trump established the National Design Studio (NDS) within the Executive Office of the President, and a new position entitled the Chief Design Officer. [1]

The Chief Design Officer is tasked with consulting thought leaders and design firms on the best way to implement the initiative, and will help recruit designers and other experts from the private sector. Heads of agencies were instructed to consult with the Chief Design Officer to implement the initiative at their agencies with a goal of producing initial results by July 4, 2026. [2] [3]

Trump named Joe Gebbia, a co-founder of Airbnb, as the first Chief Design Officer. Gebbia said government websites, especially on mobile, are "horribly out of date" and he wants to create an "Apple Store-like experience." [4]

The National Design Studio plans to include staff from DOGE . [5] The NDS website suggests it will focus on passport renewals, tax filing, and green card applications which were projects already underway by USDS, 18F, and IRS Direct File, teams that were impacted or eliminated by DOGE cuts. [5]
