The Choma Solar Power Station is a solar power plant, under development in Zambia, with generation capacity of 60 megawatts and an attached 20 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS). The privately owned solar farm is being developed by a joint venture company, comprising "YEO Teknoloji Enerji ve Endustri AS" (YEO), a Turkish energy company and "GEI Power Limited", a Zambian independent power producer (IPP). The off-taker is ZESCO (Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation Limited), the national electricity utility, under a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA). [1] [2]

Location

The power station would located in Choma District, in the Southern Province of Zambia. Choma, the district headquarters is located approximately 285 kilometres (177 mi), southwest of Lusaka, the national capital and the largest city in the country. [3]

Overview

This solar farm is the first grid-ready photovoltaic solar installation with an attached BESS in the country. The design calls for a ground-mounted solar panel layout, with maximum generation capacity of 60 megawatts. An attached 20 MWh BESS, based on lithium-battery technology will be incorporated in the design to allow the station to supply power even when sun is not up. [1] [2]

Developers

The developers/owners of this power station have formed a special purpose vehicle (SPV) company to own, design, develop, construct, operate and maintain this power station. The name of the SPV company is Choma Solar Power Plant Limited. The ownership of the SPV company is as outlined in the table below. [4]

Construction costs and timeline

The construction costs for the power station are reported as US$65 million. Construction is expected to begin in 2024, with commercial commissioning expected in September 2025. As of May 2024, the necessary feasibility, grid impact and environmental impact assessment studies had been concluded. [1] [2]

Other considerations

As of April 2024, Zambia had installed generation capacity of 3,030 MW, of which 2,393 MW (79 percent) was derived from hydroelectric sources. Due to severe drought in the sub-region in recent months, the river levels are low and Zambian electricity output is low. [5] As of February 2024, Zambia was grappling with a 500 MW deficit in electricity supply. [6] This solar farm is expected to help to partially mitigate that shortage. [1] [2]

The Blitta Solar Power Station is an operational 50 MW (67,000 hp) solar power plant in Togo. The power station was developed by Amea Power, an independent power producer (IPP), based in the United Arab Emirates. The solar farm, which is the largest grid-ready in Togo, is also referred to as Mohamed Bin Zayed Power Station, named after His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi. The power station began commercial operations in June 2021.

Djermaya Solar Power Station (DSPS) is a planned 60 MW (80,000 hp) solar power plant in Chad. The Nagreongo Solar Power Station, also Nagréongo Solar Power Station, is a 30 MW (40,000 hp) solar power in Burkina Faso. The solar farm, which was commissioned in July 2022, was developed by the French IPP, GreenYellow, a subsidiary of the Casino Group. The energy generated here is sold to the Burkinabe electricity utility company SONABEL,, under a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA).

The Caraculo Solar Power Station is a planned 50 MW (67,000 hp) solar power plant in Angola. The power station is owned and operated by a consortium comprising Eni, the Italian energy multinational, in collaboration with Sonangol, the Angolan energy parastatal. On 31 May 2023, 25 MW of power came online, in the first phase with another 25 megawatts to follow.

The Soma Solar Power Station is a planned 150 megawatts solar power plant in Gambia. The two lead developers of this renewable energy infrastructure are the Government of Gambia and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). The World Bank and the European Investment Bank, have jointly committed US$164 million in loans towards this development.

The Zambia Riverside Solar Power Station is a 34 megawatts solar power plant in Zambia. The privately owned solar farm was originally commissioned in April 2018, as a 1 MW power station by Copperbelt Energy Corporation (CEC), who own the energy infrastructure. In December 2021, CEC signed a engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract with Sinohydro to expand the solar farm by 33 extra MW over the next 12 months. CEC transmits and distributes the power to its customers in the Copperbelt Province of Zambia.

The Ambatolampy Solar Power Station is a 40 MW solar power plant in Madagascar. As of April 2022, it was the first grid-connected, privately-funded solar power plant in the country. The power plant, which was first commissioned in 2018, underwent expansion from 20 MW to 40 MW, between 2021 and 2022. The off-taker of the power generated at this renewable energy power plant is Jirama, the national electricity utility company.

The Zina Solar Power Station is a 26.6 megawatts solar power plant in Burkina Faso. The power station is owned and was developed by a consortium comprising Amea Power, an independent power producer (IPP), based in the United Arab Emirates and Windiga Energy, an IPP based in Canada. The energy off-taker for this solar farm is Société Nationale d'électricité du Burkina Faso (SONABEL), the Burkinabe national electricity utility company. A 25-year power purchase agreement, governs the terms of the sale of electricity to SONABEL. Financial close for the power station was reached in May 2022.

The Niakhar Power Station is a proposed 30 MW (40,000 hp) solar power plant in Senegal. The solar farm is under development by Energy Resources Senegal (ERS), a supplier of solar panels and Climate Fund Managers (CFM), an independent fund manager based in South Africa. The plan calls for an attached battery energy storage system rated at 15MW/45MWh. Th energy generated here will be sold to Société nationale d'électricité du Sénégal (Senelec), for integration into the national grid.

The Itimpi Solar Power Station is a 60 megawatts solar power plant in Zambia. The privately owned solar farm was commissioned in April 2024. It was developed and is owned by Copperbelt Energy Corporation (CEC), through their 100 percent subsidiary CEC Renewables. CEC transmits and distributes the power to its customers in the Copperbelt Province of Zambia.

The Dapaong Solar Power Station is a planned 25 megawatts solar power plant in Togo. In April 2024, the Government of Togo announced an international tender for qualified international firms and consortia to submit bids of expression of interest in the design, procurement and installation of a 25 MW solar power plant, with attached battery storage power station (BESS) storage of 40MWh. The tender closes on 4 June 2024.

The Donsin Solar Power Station is a 25 megawatts solar power plant under development in Burkina Faso. The power station is owned and is being developed by the Government of Burkina Faso, through the Ministry of Energy, Mines and Quarries. The off-taker of the power generated here is Société Nationale d'électricité du Burkina Faso (SONABEL), the Burkinabe national electricity utility company. The project received funding support, in the form of a €45.7 million concessional loan from the Export-Import Bank of China.
