Christopher Paul Franks (born 2 August 1951) is a Plaid Cymru Politician. He was a member of the National Assembly for Wales between 2007 and 2011 for the South Wales Central constituency,and Vale of Glamorgan councillor for Dinas Powys from 2004-2017 and 2017-present. He has previously led the Plaid Cymru group on the council.
Franks was born in Cardiff,and educated at Llandaff College. He qualified as a civil engineer,and worked in the Highways and Transport Department of a local authority.
Franks was a Plaid Cymru councillor for Dinas Powys on South Glamorgan County Council from 1981 until the council's dissolution. [1] He was elected to Vale of Glamorgan Council from Dinas Powys ward,and also to Dinas Powys Community Council. In 2001,he was chosen as Plaid Cymru group leader on the Vale of Glamorgan Council.
After the 2004 elections to Vale of Glamorgan Council the Plaid Cymru group found itself with the 'balance of power' and Franks held meetings with both the Conservative and Labour leaders. [2] Eventually,the Conservatives formed a minority administration which lasted until November 2006 when a crisis over social services cuts led to a vote of no confidence in the Conservative leader being passed. Franks declared that an all-party coalition was preferable. [3] A coalition between Labour,Plaid Cymru and Independent councillors was agreed that December under which Franks became the cabinet member for Legal and Public Protection,a post that he no longer holds. Franks was neutral in his support for the coalition having abstained in the vote of no confidence.
In the 2017 elections,Franks lost his seat to the Conservatives but regained his seat in the 2022 elections. [4]
Franks contested the Vale of Glamorgan constituency in the 1999 and 2003 elections to the National Assembly for Wales,and the UK Parliament constituency in the 2001 General Election,and was unsuccessful in all cases. He also challenged Owen John Thomas for the top placement on Plaid Cymru's party list for the South Wales Central region for the 2003 election,but was unsuccessful. [5]
Franks was selected in May 2006 as second on Plaid Cymru's list for South Wales Central following the retirement of Owen John Thomas;Plaid had won two seats from the regional list in both previous elections to the Assembly. [6] He duly retained the seat in the 2007 election.
Barry is a town and community in the Vale of Glamorgan,Wales. It is on the north coast of the Bristol Channel approximately 9 miles (14 km) south-southwest of Cardiff. Barry is a seaside resort,with attractions including several beaches and the resurrected Barry Island Pleasure Park. Dinas Powys is a town and community in the Vale of Glamorgan,South Wales. Its name means "fort of the provincial place" and refers to the Iron Age hillfort which overlooks the village. Dinas Powys is 5.6 miles (9.0 km) south-west of the centre of Cardiff and is situated on the A4055 road from Cardiff to Barry,making it a popular dormitory village for city commuters. It neighbours the larger town of Penarth.

Gareth Jones OBE is a Welsh politician. He was a member of the National Assembly for Wales for the Conwy from 1999 until 2003 when he lost by 72 votes. He sought a successful re-election to the newly created Aberconwy constituency in 2007 before retiring in 2011. He was also Leader of Conwy County Borough Council,from 2017 to 2019,and a Llandudno town councillor representing the Craig-y-Don ward. He was formerly a member of Plaid Cymru,but left in 2017 after attempting to form a council administration in Conwy containing Welsh Conservatives,which the national party would not allow. He ran an independent administration of the council until 2019,when the Conservatives took control of the council.

The Welsh Conservatives,also known as the Welsh Conservative Party,is the branch of the United Kingdom Conservative Party that operates in Wales. At Westminster elections,it is the second-most popular political party in Wales by vote share,having obtained the second-largest share of the vote at every general election since 1931. The 1995 Cardiff Council election was the first election to the new unitary County Council of the City and County of Cardiff following the re-organization of local government in Wales. This included the Isle of Anglesey,which was previously up for election in 2013 due to having its elections delayed for a year. Community council elections also took place on the same day. These local elections were held as part of the 2017 local elections in the United Kingdom. Apart from Anglesey,the last elections were held in 2012. Normally these elections take place every four years,but the 2017 elections were postponed for a year in order to avoid clashing with the 2016 Welsh Assembly election,which itself had been postponed by a year to avoid clashing with the 2015 general election.
Dinas Powys is the name of an electoral ward in the Vale of Glamorgan,Wales. It covers its namesake community of Dinas Powys and the neighbouring Michaelston-le-Pit and Leckwith to the north. The ward elects four county councillors to the Vale of Glamorgan Council.
