Eurfyl ap Gwilym (born 14 November 1944) is a Welsh economist,deputy chairman of the Principality Building Society,and a Plaid Cymru politician.
He was born in Penparcau,Ceredigion and was educated at Ardwyn Grammar School followed by a BSc and PhD at King's College London.
Ap Gwilym is a Deputy Chairman of the Principality Building Society,which is the largest mutual society in Wales. [3] He is also a director of Nemo Personal Finance Ltd [4] and Loan Link Ltd [5] and is the chair of the Principality Pension Trustees. [6] His other directorships include director of iSOFT Group plc from 19 May 2000 until 30 October 2007,NCC Group plc and Pure Wafer plc.
Ap Gwilym has been a member of Plaid Cymru since 1963.
He is an economics adviser to the party and was one of their first prospective candidates for the House of Lords. [3] Plaid had dropped its opposition to sending members to the House of Lords in response to constitutional changes that give the second chamber the power to veto law-making proposals put forward by the National Assembly for Wales. [7]
He is a trustee of the Welsh think tank,the Institute of Welsh Affairs, [8] and frequently writes for their ClickOnWales website. [9]
He was formerly the party chairman and serves to cost manifesto proposals each year. [10] He told the BBC in 2017 that the party would not strike a formal deal with the Conservative Party,but controversially has said that the party should consider co-operating with the Tories on particular topics if "we get something in return" [10]
For many years he has advocated a revision of the Barnett formula,which determines how much money Wales receives from HM Treasury. He has proposed alternatives to the current funding settlement and contributes to the Institute of Welsh Affairs on such topics,and argues that if a new formula based on need was introduced,Wales would be entitled to hundreds of millions of pounds extra a year. Ap Gwilym's public profile rose further after an interview with Jeremy Paxman on the BBC current affairs programme,Newsnight. [12] In the interview ap Gwilym challenged Paxman on a variety of economic figures,telling him to "do your homework" when those figures were not readily available. A recording of the interview received over 90,000 hits on YouTube within the first few days of release.
Plaid Cymru is a centre-left to left-wing,Welsh nationalist political party in Wales,committed to Welsh independence from the United Kingdom. It campaigns on a platform of social democracy and civic nationalism. The party is a strong supporter of the European Union and is a member of the European Free Alliance (EFA). Plaid was formed in 1925 under the name Plaid Genedlaethol Cymru and Gwynfor Evans won the first Westminster seat for the party at the 1966 Carmarthen by-election.
Adam Robert Price is a Welsh politician who served as Leader of Plaid Cymru from September 2018 to May 2023. He has been the Member of the Senedd (MS) for Carmarthen East and Dinefwr since 2016,having previously been a Member of Parliament (MP) for the same Westminster constituency from 2001 to 2010.
Dafydd Wynne Wigley,Baron Wigley,is a Welsh politician who served as the leader of Plaid Cymru from 1981 to 1984 and again from 1991 to 2000. He served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Caernarfon from 1974 to 2001 and as the Member of the Welsh Assembly for Caernarfon from 1999 to 2003. In 2010,Wigley was granted life peerage,taking his seat in the House of Lords in 2011.

The Commission on Devolution in Wales,also known as the Silk Commission,was an independent commission established by Welsh Secretary Cheryl Gillan on 11 October 2011. The commission was based at the Wales Office Cardiff headquarters,at Cardiff Bay and met for the first time on 4 November 2011 at the Millennium Stadium,Cardiff. The commission reviewed the case for the devolution of fiscal powers to the Welsh Assembly,now the Senedd,and considered the case for increasing the powers of the assembly. It published its findings in two parts.
