Christine Ongare (born 26 November 1993 [1] ) is a Kenyan boxer competing in the featherweight division. She represented Kenya at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia winning a bronze medal thus making her the first Kenyan woman to win a Commonwealth Games medal in boxing. [2]

Career

Christine Ongare participated in football and acrobatics before taking up boxing [3] in 2011 in Kenya's Kariobangi Estate [4]

Christine Ongare competed at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia. She was seeded for the featherweight tournament and lost to Northern Ireland's Carly McNaul. [5] As of February 2020, she had qualified to represent Kenya at the since postponed 2020 Summer Olympics after beating Uganda's Catherine Nanziri at the 2020 African Boxing Olympic Qualification Tournament in Dakar, Senegal.

Personal life

Born to a single mother in Eastlands, Nairobi, Ongare herself became a mother at 12 years of age. [6]

Merven Clair is a Mauritian boxer. He competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in the men's middleweight event, in which he was eliminated in the first round by Hosam Bakr Abdin. He also competed at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in the welterweight class where he was also eliminated in the first round, that time by Kenya's Rayton Okwiri. At the 68th edition of the Strandja Memorial in February 2017, he placed third after a defeat in the semifinals to eventual tournament winner Pat McCormack. At the 2017 African Boxing Championships in Brazzaville, Clair secured a silver medal in the 69 kg weight class, suffering his only defeat of the tournament in the final against Muzamiru Kakande from Uganda. He won the gold medal at the 2019 African Games in Rabat, Morocco in the welterweight class by defeating the Nigerian boxer Abdulafeez Osoba in the final. At the 2020 African Boxing Olympic Qualification Tournament, he was defeated in the quarterfinals by Stephen Zimba by referee stoppage in the second round.

Skye Brittany Nicolson is an Australian professional boxer. As an amateur she competed in the featherweight event at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, winning the gold medal. Nicolson competed at the 2020 Summer Olympics. In her first bout in the women's Feather (54–57 kg) preliminaries she beat Im Ae-ji from Republic of Korea on points. She was beaten in the quarterfinals by Kariss Artingstall from Great Britain.

Shadir Musa Bwogi is a Ugandan boxer and current captain of the Bombers, Uganda's national boxing team. He competes in the welterweight division and is a southpaw. He competed in the men's welterweight event at the 2020 Summer Olympics.

Roumaysa Boualam is an Algerian amateur boxer. She won the gold medal in the women's minimumweight event at the 2022 Mediterranean Games held in Oran, Algeria. She competed at several editions of the IBA Women's World Boxing Championships.

Rady Adosinda Gramane is a Mozambican boxer. She represented Mozambique at the 2018 Commonwealth Games held in Gold Coast, Australia. In the same year, she also competed in the women's middleweight event at the 2018 AIBA Women's World Boxing Championships held in New Delhi, India.

Everisto Mulenga is a Zambian amateur boxer. He won a bronze medal at the 2019 African Games and later qualified for the 2020 Summer Olympics by winning the African Qualification Tournament, both at featherweight.

Ornella Sathoud is a Ghanaian amateur boxer. She is competing in the women's middleweight division in the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
